Contractor Stuffs My Dumpster Full of Concrete: 12 Tons of "No Way José"!

We tackled a massive concrete-filled dumpster! Even after telling the contractor they were not allowed to use the dumpster for concrete AND they signed a contract...they did it anyway.
It was an absolute pain to dig it all out and separate it, but we were determined to make it work. It helped to have a mini excavator and skid steer available. And you know what? Despite the challenges, our business still managed to make a decent amount of money from it. Had the contractor reached out about getting rid of the concrete, we could have saved them thousands. Their mistake definitely became my headache.
It was a frustrating journey, but at the end of the day, it's just business. It's our job to problem-solve these things, tackle them, and move on because we have other customers to serve. But hopefully, the next one listens better.

Wow, never would have assumed this is a KZbin channel, but I'm getting all the odd recommendations today. I can dig it, honestly. I'm a cabinet guy and do finish type stuff as well and its interesting to see an aspect of construction/the trades i never really put much thought into. Seems like no matter what aspect of construction you're on, people almost always assume you're ready and waiting to go above and beyond for them lol. I drove a roll off semi trailer for a glass recycling outfit. 70% of the jobs were roll offs at rural landfills for the 3 colors of bottles. Not too many problems with overweight in a 45 yard container. Except for one little town dump that the employee spent all of his spare time smashing the bottles down to small pieces, then they were HEAVY. Solution was never give them a 45 yard roll off, always bring them a 30 yard. Same thing for the storefront plate glass businesses. We had one place that would overfill the 30 yard roll off every time, no matter how many times we told them to call us sooner for pickup. So we ended up cutting them back to 15 yard low side roll offs, which they continued to overload with plate glass stacked 1-2 feet over the low sides. As a driver, all we would do was put the boom up until the foot roller touched the ground, then winch the box up that almost vertical boom and spill off all that glass that was stacked above the sidewall onto the ground. They STILL never learned!

Heavy duty cans and trucks, these dumpsters are our favorites. All that clean fill being mixed with trash makes it a trash load. 15,16t, whatever, and 3t is trash, 1 ton is light iron and the rest goes as clean fill? Love it. This is why we have a transfer station so we can legally (in PA) sort these loads and handle appropriately.

I word at republic services and there is a reason the biggest roll off we allow for concrete is a 20 y and they actually make specific roll off for concrete and they are expensive to buy new because loading up 30 and 40 yarders damages the roll off just from dropping it 7 feet on the floor

24:54 the contractor has money to pay for incidentals, it comes out of the bonus money they get for finishing the contract early, stuff like that. I might of charged them double the extra tonnage. We run f 550 and a couple ram 5500 with 10k hooklifts. We've ran into a couple situations lile that and have very detailed allowed/not allowed lists on the bins themselves and weight estimates. Bottom line if we cant pick it up, it's the customers responsibility and they will be charged a daily penalty. We have 95 bins and during the summer months they are all booked so it really screws up our schedule.

honestly I don't think you charged them enough for breaking contract and damaging equipment. you may want to refresh your contract language to outline a heavy fines for breaking contract with items like heavy fill when dealing with a potentially large contract like home deopt. a "fuck you" clause if you will, because really what they did doesn't just cost you time and a headache, lets say you had a employee under your company not paying attention, that much over weight I don't doubt that all in initial fill was 15-18 tons especially with all the rain. That kind of overweight with your equipment will eventually cost a driver their license, a business their operation and damage to equipment, most possibly life. the fines for breaking those clauses in your contract to such a degree should match. you may want to talk with a contract lawyer, but I personally for this kind of "fuck you" from those sub contractors and the person from homedepot that hired you should be responded in kind with a "no, fuck you." of a minimum doubling of extra daily/weekly fines and a $10,000 damaged equipment fine, $10,000 over weight fine and a $10,000 contract breaking fine. The kind of contractors and subcontractors willing to do this to you and your dumpsters are willing to do far worse and undercut competition to seem competitive while being reckless. make a part of your companies daily operations pre/post trips trips a necessity, you start your trip/day by taking pictures of the current state of equipment, you do the same for when they are dropped off at a client, and again when picked up. this will help you keep track of equipment maintenance, and any damages. with the smaller equipment you run these kind of pre/post trips can be done in a matter of minutes. with the photos you just create a album for that date/client or better yet email yourself the pictures with a subject matter of "client name - Date to Date" just simply reply to your own emails with updated pictures for each portion of the pre/post trip process, this will keep a accurate log of equipment quality/status. there are apps that do this in the semi truck industry but you may not need them as a local small business of yourself and a couple others. samsara ELD works its just a hassle over just emailing yourself the pictures. You are in the equipment business for your personal expertise with what your equipment and business can handle. there are three tiers of business operators/operations. Tier 1. Industry leaders, they know their shit, they are the best of the best, the industry looks to them for advice and knowledge, they work with every important government official and business leader to make regulations and innovate to improve the sector. Tier 2 ( where you want to be and it seems like you are trying to be). These people and companies know their worth, they also should know most if not all what they need to know about your sector. they don't lowball, and rarely if ever offer discounts or breaks unless its for correcting mistakes(rare exceptions are for long standing customers, family, and friends.) these are the people that will find the most success in what they do. they know loosing a few customers on the low end offers is not only a benefit to the customer, but also themselves and the industry knowing this makes things safer, and more efficient for everyone. Tier 3. these people and companies know enough to be dangerous. people in the upper portion of this tier are still learning their worth, and are actively trying to improve by either being an apprentice or trial by fire. these people in upper tier 3 know caution, and respect. The lower portion of this tier are the worst of the worst, its where the bottom feeders are. the lower portion of this tier tend to be spiteful, they offer the lowest bid at every cost so long as they make a dime they don't give a shit about you or the customer, they are here to get in and get out. as long as they don't get hurt its not their problem. leaving a wake of burnt bridges these people hurt all industry and relationships. they are extremely dangerous. Lower Tier 3 are the subcontractor/contractor that hired you, somebody is lying straight to your face(by all means it looks like the subcontractors) and they should be fined/treated accordingly. the ONLY way to keep these kind of trash spiteful people out of any industry is to hit them where it hurts the most, right in their greed, by snatching their wallet and lighting that bitch on fire. you need a back bone to leave these people on the bridge they are actively burning. Fining these types of people/companies its not spite, you don't even need to hate them, you can hope them all the best. you just need to draw clear cut lines in the sand, they will end up burning themselves down. hopefully in the process of doing so, they learn a valuable lesson and if they are reborn in a new or even the same industry they come back as a phoenix with new perspective earning their way to upper tier 3, and maybe even tier 2. It sounds like you are still learning your worth. don't worry about charging too much, you have established yourself and seem to have effective advertising with consistent clients. you are well beyond the point to charging what you need to to get started. you also should know a reasonable rate for what you do. so don't worry about increasing the price too high or charging too many fines. if a new customer approaches you and says "but soso went with you a few months ago and recommended you saying you do this at this price" inform them that yes at that time your price/fines were as such but you need to grow as a small business, would love to work for them but at the updated reasonable price and you will maintain your quality while improving your services.

Years ago I filled a 20 yarder to the top with concrete. The guys wheels came off the ground about 4ft. I nearly shat myself, because I thought he wouldn't take it. He said it wasn't a problem, I' just have to take the back roads to the dump (way overloaded). Now I just overload my dump truck.

I’ve never rented a dumpster that didn’t specify in the concrete about shingles, dirt, stone, asphalt, concrete etc. He will take those items there are just limitations. He puts a dotted line on the outside of the dumpster that is the fill line for those items listed above.

What you should do is put in the Contract. Is, if the Contract is broken, Have 3 Options added onto the Contract, Either They Empty The Dumpster, You can Empty the Dumpster for them for an Add Charge, Or You can will take the the Dumpster, But, will have to Charge them Extra for another Dumpster(s)*until puts you into correct legal weight requirement then on top of it. Charge them a Extra $500.00 Per Ton.

I had a customer put 90,000 lbs of just ceramic blast media in a single 6,000lb empty 30yard container... Hoist on truck was rated for 60,000lbs... Truck with 30yard weighed 36000lbs and max grossed legally 73,000lbs without permit and was permitted up to 80,000lbs... Needless to say customer had to rent a mini excavator and second container to split the contents into.

I had one order a 30yard with liner then proceeded to fill under the liner with concrete mixer clean out and topped with asphalt chunks then filled again with more uncured concrete...which then cured in the week before they called it in for service... Customer ended up buying the 30o container since it was not serviceable and the container was never emptied by one of our drivers... Worst part it was a brand new 30o container.

That’s nothing. I heard about a guy, that knew a dude, that said he worked for a real hustler, whose brother’s cousin’s sister said she was screwing a guy, who swore he delivered a 40 yd dumpster to a job-site, on top of a mountain in the desert and first, the Contractor perfectly leveled the container, then filled it to the brim with radioactive, molten lead, waiting 3 months for it to cool and then glued feathers on top to disguise the contents. The dumpster service eventually had to obtain EPA Permits, design, Permit and build a new DOT approved road for access across a protected ravine in a National Park, which required relocation of 11 gopher tortoises. Then rent a 150 ton crane to load it onto a 22 axle Heavy Haul Rig, take it to the regional port and then have it shipped straight to the battery factory in Gwaong Chang, China, only to be returned to the U.S. as EV batteries. So in the end, they were legally allowed to charge the Contractor and finally granted by the SCOTUS, $7.3 Billion to pull that dumpster. Fun story huh? 🤣

I feel ya. I was doing a parking lot crack fill at an RDC last summer and the company said we could use their dumpster for our boxes. They had 3 dumpsters side by side one said metal, one said trash and one said cardboard. It painted on the dumpster and on the asphalt on all 4 sides. My idiot sub put all the boxes in the metal dumpster. I spent two hours handpicking all the cardboard out because other subs had already dumped large metal cabinets on top of the boxes. If they had not already driven home 8 hours away they would have definitely been doing it themselves but I needed to keep my customer happy since we had just done half a million LF of crack fill.

I think you need to get yourself a good dump truck and be completely self contained. If they are willing to pay get them what they want and let them pay the bill. You have an awesome business, I only see more and more avenues opening up for yourself. Maybe a light excavating business on the side with all your spare time.

I could see how it looks like that, but this is actually our newest can, it hasn't actually seen winter yet! I think think the rust look is just from it sitting there. And water probably has got in, because it was there quite a while. From what I can tell, it's from the concrete being poured and beating against one side. That frame basically was just holding the doors together as best it could, but eventually something had to "give". There are a couple supports that look like they "buckled" if that makes sense. And I think it's from the pressure of the dumpster trying to keep its shape with the doors closed I could be totally wrong, but this dumpster was it the best shape before this rental lol.

I'm guessing you must primarily use a 2500. My 2500 doesn't keep the trailer charged quote as well as the 3500 HD. But there are kits you can also get to run power straight from your trucks alternator to the trailer. You'll never plug your trailer in again

Maxxd are incredibly heavy duty, compared to other brands (in their class). But I will not say they should be used to pick up loads like this. Honestly, this load would of been appropriate for a triaxle dump truck or semi dumpster rig. We have picked up some pretty heavy loads that were rated well above the trailers capacity. But if we had attempted this, it would have been a record for us, and incredibly dangerous. With our trailer and truck combo, we are legal at about 6.5 tons (and that's pretty heavy compared to an average dumpster we service). Of course there are times we pick things up that are a bit heavier, but you don't know until it's emptied. But it's definitely the biggest risk factor in the business.

The dumpster is not in a secured area, so everyone and their dog was using it, also subs do not care at all about the dumpster restrictions, they will bring waste from home and other sites to dispose, its just a free dumpster for them.

Typically yea I'd agree with this. And yea they didn't care. But everything that was in this Dumpster was 100% them. Unless someone showed up with 12 truck loads of Concrete and tried to slip it in 😄. The company definitely admitted to it all. And paid. So it worked out.

If possible I'd have used the trailer and the loader to tip the can and dump it in the lot. It'd have been so much faster to scoop up with a bobcat VS picking it out basically by hand. People suck though I hope you fined the crap out of them

So I didn't even fill it, but we attempted that. It could could hardly lift it, but I couldn't get the dump angle to actually poor it out. Maybe if I had both pieces of equipmemt at the same time we could have. As you saw, the whole thing was just a wreck

I had a customer today fill a 20 yard dumpster completely full with wet muddy dirty and tried to hide it with branches. I figured it out when the hook lifts cylinders bypassed. I did not pick it up and charged them a trip charge. A tandem axle dump truck usually has a bed that big!

i would suggest getting a CDL and if funds permit get an older truck to turn into a roll off if you can't find one in that set up. this way 1, you get more bussiness 2. you earn more money and expand your bussiness and scope of work 3. you dont need to pay a contractor

IMO, they were too stupid to understand the contact and the guys on the job are probably used to having cans run by Rolloff/Hooklift trucks on other jobs. Those trucks have a far higher capacity and a much stronger winch/hook. There are companies out there that rent 20 yard dumpsters that allow them to be filled with concrete or dirt to the top. If the super on the job saw your drop it off or knew what your setup was I doubt you would’ve had that issue. The supers know that when the company gets back charged by a dumpster company they are going to get chewed out.

We just poured a concrete curb line and the city driver came to pick up a dumpster that was uphill from our pour and he lifted the dumpster enough to let the three days of rain water run out and right over our fresh concrete it took like ten minutes for all the water to run out and down the street. He left and dumped it and brought it back and put it back in the same place never saying a word of apology. 🤬🤬🤬🤬👎👎👎 city drivers.

I would love to set up a simular business, I'm just not financially in the spot to buy the necessary equipment, I know it sounds silly but with currently having a 1/2 ton truck do you think buying 2 medium sized dump trailers might be a good start ? I am a disabled vet so I want to work, I have money to feed my family, I just need to cover operating expenses and build some income to grow it into a workable business. I've got 24 acres of land I live on and I could actually use a lot of that dirt and rock and concrete to raise it as I would like some more flood resistance. I would love to bring that kind of material out as often as possible, use my little tractor to burry it and build up the land

It really depends on your goals. I prefer roll offs because one trailer manages multiple bins. Which means only one trailer to insure, one trailer to plate, one set of tires, one set of brakes, batteries, etc.

This is a typical construction mess, someone orders something in an office for a site miles away and messages don’t get passed down the chain, maybe to prevent this sort of thing happening again you could sign write on the inside of door “ no concrete no asphalt etc so the end user has a chance or just clean up as you did 😅
