This isn't even a joke. My office manager (a woman) got a quote last week for a new bathroom faucet to repair a leak. The quote was over $700. I went out on Saturday and fixed it in 30 minutes for $37 with a faucet from Home Depot . I always thought this was just a joke, but it is absolutely real.

As a contractor, you can build almost an entire room for $1,300 in materials. It's the labor that gets you. So I'm guessing they were charging you $20 a square foot. And I'm also guessing that they had to tear out all the tile on a thousand square feet and then repour self-leveling concrete down in order to put the flooring in so that it's level. Yeah, I probably would have done it for half as much or less depending on other details

And contractors/self employed trades people as well. They know exactly how long it will take them and they just hand out ridiculous high quotes. I know of an electrician who made 1500$ in a 6 hour day in labour!!! He knew exactly how long it will take him and he knew exactly what the materials would cost... it is the Wild West around here right now. On the upside: if you are honest, reliable and do good work you will have more work and happy customers than you can ever handle. Minimum wage is 15$/h and the average income 25$/h.

Having been a contractor, people often think that you are like this, even when you are not. But, when you are honest, they still ask if you give a discount for cash. I always told them that I didn’t, as I always paid my tax on it. If you don’t put any cash through your books, the tax office notices, and can end up investigating you closely. I did have one job I went to, which I was told had a fault on the boiler (furnace). When I checked it, I found that a part had been intentionally loosened. I realised that it was one of those rogue trader TV shows. After all, the family had seemed too perfect, if you know what I mean. I explained to them what I had found, and that I had reconnected the wire. I said that I wasn’t charging them, as I realised that it was a setup situation for a show. They were surprised, as apparently I had been the only engineer, that had reported the correct fault. I thought anything that I charged them would look bad on TV, so I thought it better to take the loss. I have no idea if I ever made the Final Cut of the show or not.

We had a guy hook the gas line up (from a small BBQ tank trough the wall right to the stove). Took him 20 min and he charges 400$. I am guessing the materials were around 35$. But hey, he needs to pay for that new 100k truck right. And it took him 10 min to drive to us from his place so I mean it all needs to be compensated.

@@debunkinghistory214 Minimum wage around here is 15$/h and there are a ton of people working for it. I do understand that it is a job and that you have less responsibility, less risk, etc. Still, you have to keep that in your mind. An average salary is around 45,000/year so that is around 25$/h. Also keep in mind that a lot of the trades people have cash opportunities- this counts almost as double. So making 50$/h cash is like making 100$ gross. Yes, you better not be in a hurry if you need somebody to do some work for you

Three tips: (1) Always look at the number of reviews, not just the number of stars. (2) Never hire general contractors. Just bring in individual tradespeople - plumber, electrician , carpenter, tiles - to each do the specific job they're qualified to do. (3) Offer half what their initial quote is. But it also helps to pay a reno coach to lay it all out for you and assess the work.
@debunkinghistory214
@debunkinghistory214 Жыл бұрын
Your tips aren't good. Reviews are often fake, and many companies pressure or incentivize customers to write good reviews, while most companies don't bother doing so. I know solid companies (that have been around for decades in some cases) with 2 stars because one a-hole had a chip on their shoulder. A GC is needed unless you know what you're doing, have common sense, and have some understanding how buildings work. There are always surprises once you start opening things up and you have to know how to navigate that, and most homeowners don't. The subs aren't going to care or help you to do so, their price is based on 100% ready-to-go conditions. Number three is downright dumb. It's great advice if you want all tradespeople to hate you, have no respect for you, and have no one you can count on in your network. You don't haggle or lowball, you simply get many quotes to discover the true price and weed out the rip-jobs. And next time around you will know what you're doing, know what the real prices are, and won't have to get as many quotes. When contractors know you know what you're doing, they know they can't rip you off and they give honest prices because they want the work. And most contractors are honest anyway, a minority aren't. If you act like a whiney entitled douche, yes some might take you for a ride. It's obvious you have zero idea what you're talking about, because it's a rule of thumb in renovations that materials are roughly half the total cost. So if you offer half they are working for free.

@@aquamarine99911 OK, and I've been involved with more projects. Your tips are bad. Anyone who knows what they're doing already knows what every single element of the job will cost before they even call for quotes. The quotes are simply to verify the guy is reasonable and to confirm his availability. A knowledgeable person should be able to predict project cost on back of envelope within 10-20% after looking very closely and running through all your materials. Again, here in Philly area at least, materials alone tend to be roughly half the cost, or slightly less than half, which makes your lowball recommendation laughably bad. Having a network is important and your offer half BS is horrible for that. But there are certainly many piggies in our industry who don't care about people. I agree with your tip on going straight to subs for knowledgeable homeowners who can project-manage it themselves, but most don't know enough.

This is a useful video for spreading awareness of this, despite being comedic. Recently I was interested in repainting some parts of my leather car seat, the guy quoted me 1k and explained how you have to do the whole seat plus the other one so that you cant see the difference, and that there was no way to simply paint them because if you didn't put some more chemicals the color would last for only a few days. I said thank you because it was ridiculous what he was saying, bough special leather for 15 bucks and repainted what i needed. That was months ago, you can't tell the difference and it is still like the first day. Should I give myself the 1K since that's what he would have stolen from me? Lol

She’s so funny I just don’t know if her humor resonates with everybody. It does with me but I’m assuming I’m probably around the same age with me. I’m a pretty normal person. Huh I guess I just tried to psychoanalyze why she only has 187,000 followers so. And it’s already there so now I’m gonna have to leave it. I’m sure she’ll get more traction. Keep killing it.

Yup car mechanics are the same way with women, as soon as a man appears who knows something about cars the money vacuum disappears.
