Just experimenting with a couple of different contrast paints over metallic undercoat to see what it will do to plate armour. Also, just a quick look at using a different base for the contrast flesh.
Ps, I know Richard Duke of Gloucester wasn't at Towton I meant Tewkesbury. The heat is cooking my brain 😀

Love the contrast over metalllics, was considering trying this out myself but thanks for showing it off, now I can pick my favourite without having to do test models!

Thanks very much , glad you found it useful. The gore grunta fur definitely gives a good bronze / burnished effect. If you want to go very gaudy you can then use a gold to highlight, more suitable for fantasy than historical 👍😀

Love the bronzed armour effect, so simple. I’ve got 4 units of Renaissance cuirassiers to paint, so going to do 1 in 6 figure with this bronzed armour. They will look awesome...👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🐿

Wanted to try the same things with my Perry knights thanks for the video. I like the effect over the metallic a lot, maybe with a lighter metal. Defenetly trying this out!

No problem, since making this I've played about with lighter undercoat and it definitely works, I quite like to have some darker and lighter just for some variation when looking at the unit 👍

What I found painting chain mail of Saxon Dark Age warriors is that applying a second coat of the Basillicum Grey makes it darker and less 'cartoonish'. I haven't tried it on plate metal but I'm hopeful it will help. Also a friend of mine, and a better painter than me, chooses to use one coat of the grey and then apply nuln oil.

Very cool video i was willing to try some metal+contrast combo; i need to say leadbelcher + basilicanum grey is what i used mostly but i also use just basilicanum grey on base (grey seer or wraith bone) for little metallic stitches (ie for bridle pin or horseshoes). However, i almost not paint fantasy/medioeval (the only one not scifi i'm painting at the moment where some cowgirls and horses from Black Scorpion's Tombstone) so i use really little metallic i'm wondering... does anyone used metallic+color to paint Space Marine? wich one? with wich results?

some very interesting colors .snakebite leather makes a really nice gold , not sure what you'd call space wolves grey , i guess a dark blue grey , very pretty ! plague bearer flesh comes out more yellow than i expected . apothecary white is a light grey , the reds , blues and greens are about what you'd expect . that was fun :)

I wonder - what would the difference be if you used a lighter metallic basecoat (AP Plate Mail spray, or any brighter brushed-on paint)? Another possibility would be to thin the paints with the contrast medium so you get the "wash" effect from Templar or Basilicanum without it being quite so overwhelming on the whole armor. Unthinned, the Templar looks like it would be excellent for "blackened" or enameled armor. When I think of WotR or Burgundian knights I imagine them shiny and "chivalric", which is an emotional rather than an historical conviction. The darker look I associate with "grittier" Eastern armies - the Holy Roman Empire, Bohemian knights in the Hussite Wars, mercenaries fighting in Hungarian armies, even the Knights of Malta.

Hello mate 👍 since doing this video i have played around alot with various base layers. Using the lighter colours like chrome gives a nice bright armour especially if you use basillicanum grey as the contrast wash over it, i think like the knights your describing. I tend to use it for my lords and nobles who can afford better armour and for it to be cleaned. The black templar does work well for blackened armour however i would suggest 2 coats. I understand what your saying about the perception of knights of the WOTR however chivaly which was prevalent through the 100 years war had well and truly been discarded by the WOTR. We have descriptions of Edward IV actually harnessed in blackened armour. I like to mix a couple of guys in blackened armour in my units, just to represent those men who could afford something from the continent.

Great video mate. After seeing this I’d pass on the contrast paint for armour. It doesn’t look right to me and it pools in areas you don’t want it to. i.e you can see large pooling of the contrast on the breast plate and helmet. As far as highlighting goes, I wouldn’t be doing 2 or 3 highlights for tabletop minis especially Napoleonic’s as it’s a long and tedious job as it is trying to get them done. I do 1 highlight and that’s it.
@7thson726
@7thson726 4 жыл бұрын
The contrast paint does take some getting used to, for the armour I've since stated being more sparing with quantity To be honest the highlights don't take very long as I usually work from the same paint mix and blend in the lighter tones while it's still wet. I don't bother for normal models but for command bases and special models I usually spend a bit longer 👍

Would Richard have had anyone at Towton?he was 5\6 yrs old at the time of the battle as for the archers they’d definitely would’ve been cold given the weather the night before!

Yeah, that slip of the tongue has been picked up a few times. Richard definitely wasn't at Towton he was only 8. I think at the time i was thinking of Tewkesbury but because i was talking and painting i just got muddled 😁 those men would have been a tad chilly indeed, the weather on the day was horrific as well
