Contrasting "One God" with "Oneness" & "Trinity" | Joel Hemphill

21st Century Reformation

In yet another great presentation at the 2012 Winnsboro Ministers' Conference, Joel Hemphill talks about his One God understanding in contrast to his former "Oneness" view of God and to the popular idea that God is "three" rather than "one."
ALSO SEE - "The Oneness Pentecostal Dilemma - Honor the Son" - by J. Dan Gill, Editor in Chief, 21st Century Reformation. studio.kzbin.infoSSXL...
After 50 years as a Oneness Pentecostal minister, Joel Hemphill came to the understanding that not only is the Doctrine of the Trinity not scriptural, but that modern-day Oneness doctrine is lacking as well. While Brother Hemphill still holds to the Jesus Name - Apostolic message, he has come to the realization that the Jesus Name Apostolics in the Book of Acts were not proclaiming the post-biblical Oneness view of God. They did not declare God as three “manifestations.” Rather, they declared the Father himself as the only one who is truly God. And, Jesus, not as God, but rather God’s virgin born human son - the man whom God has “made to be Lord and Christ” (Acts 2.36). The Apostles in the Book of Acts taught repentance and baptism in the name of Jesus “Christ” not Jesus “Our God” (Acts 2.38).

CANNEY ENCYCLOPEDIA: "The early church always baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus until the development of the trinity; afterward they were baptized in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost" (Page 53). NEW INTERNATIONAL STANDARD BIBLE ENCYCLOPEDIA: "The term 'Trinity' was originated by ... Tertullian, a Roman Catholic church father. No record of the Trinitarian formula can be discovered in the Acts of the Apostles... At the time of the Reformation, the Protestant Church took over the doctrine of the Trinity without serious examination" (Vol. 1, Page 396). Trinity ? JAMES HASTINGS: "It has been customary to trace the institution of the practice to the words of Christ in Matthew 28:19, but the authenticity of this passage has been challenged on historical as well as textural grounds. It must be acknowledged that the formula of the threefold name, which is here enjoined, does not appear to have been used by the primitive church, which so far as our information goes, baptized 'in' or 'into' the Name of Jesus, or Jesus Christ, or the Lord Jesus, without any reference to the Father or the Spirit" (DICTIONARY OF THE BIBLE, Page 88). SCRIBNERS: "The original form of words were into the Name of Jesus Christ or Lord Jesus. Baptism into trinity was a later development" (DICTIONARY OF THE BIBLE, Vol. I, Page 241). CANNEY ENCYCLOPEDIA: "The early church always baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus until the development of the trinity; afterward they were baptized in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost" (Page 53). ENCYCLOPEDIA AMERICAN, INTERNATIONAL EDITION: "The term Trinity was used by Theophilus of Antioch in AD 180" (Vol. 27, Page 116). BRITANNICA ENCYCLOPEDIA: "The triune and trinity formula was not uniformly used from the beginning, and up until the third century, baptism in the Name of Christ only was so widespread that Pope Stephen, in opposition to St. Cyprian, said that baptism in the Name of Christ was valid. But Catholic missionaries, by omitting one or more persons of the Trinity when they were baptized, were anathematized by the Roman church. Now the formula of Rome is, "I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and in the name of the Son and in the name of the Holy Ghost" (11th Ed., Vol. 3, Pages 365-366). ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RELIGIONS: "Persons were baptized at first in the Name of Jesus Christ, or 'in the Name of the Lord Jesus.' Afterwards, with the development of the doctrine of the Trinity, they were baptized in the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost" (Page 53). NEW INTERNATIONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA: "The Trinity doctrine. The Catholic faith is this: 'We worship one in trinity, but there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost. The glory equal - the majesty co-eternal.' The doctrine is not found in its fully developed form in the Scriptures. Modern theology does not seek to find it in the Old Testament. At the time of the Reformation, the Protestant Church took over the doctrine of the Trinity without serious examination" (Vol. 22, Page 476) HASTINGS ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RELIGION: "Christian baptism was administered by using the words 'in the Name of Jesus.' The use of a Trinity formula of any sort was not suggested in the early Church history. Baptism was always in the Name of the Lord Jesus until the time of Justin Martyr when the Triune formula was used" (Vol. 2, Pages 377-378, 389) "NAME was an ancient synonym for "Person." Payment was always made in the name of some person referring to ownership. Therefore one being baptized in Jesus' Name became His personal property. "Ye are Christ's." (Acts 1:15; Revelation 3:4; I Corinthians 3:23). LIFE MAGAZINE: "The Catholics made this statement concerning their doctrine of the Trinity to defend the dogma of the assumption of Mary in an article by Graham Green: 'Our opponents sometimes claim that no belief should be held dogmatically which is not explicitly stated in the Scripture but the Protestant churches have themselves accepted such dogma as the Trinity for which there exists no such authority in the Gospels'" (October 30, 1950, vol. 29, Number 18, Page 51). CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: "The true doctrine of the sacrament of baptism is not taught by the Roman church. Baptism given by heretics in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost with the intention of performing what the church performs, is not true baptism" (Vol. 2, Page 259). NEW CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: "With regard to the form used for Baptism in the early church, there is the difficulty that although Matthew (28:19) speaks of the Trinitarian formula, which is now used, the Acts of the Apostles (2:38; 8:16; 10:48; 19:5) and Paul (I Corinthians 1:13; 6:11; Galatians 3:27; Romans 6:3) speak only of Baptism 'in the Name of Jesus.' Baptism in titles cannot be found in the first centuries..." (McGraw Hill Publishing, Page 59). WILLIAM PHILLIPS HALL: "In this very ancient version (Syriac Peschito Version) which is believed by good authorities (Gwilliam, Boners, and others) to represent a text much older that of the Greek manuscript from which our English New Testament was largely derived, 'The Name of the Lord Jesus Messiah or Christ' appears in all four readings given (Acts 2:38; 8:16; 10:48; 19:5)" (A REMARKABLE DISCOVERY, Page 70). INTERNATIONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA: "The doctrine of the Trinity did not form part of the Apostles' preaching, as this is reported in the New Testament" (First Edition, Vol. 18, Page 226).

Although he asserts Jesus is the messiah and divine, he makes it crystal clear that we should worship God alone and follow the teachings or words of Jesus to see salvation: John 4:23-24 “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth." John 14:28: “You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I." John 20:17: “Jesus said, 'Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" Can someone explain how this belief is different from Jehovah’s Witnesses?
@acts2583
@acts2583 11 ай бұрын
Trinitarians and Jehovah's Witnesses believe that Jesus literally preexisted as another kind of being (God, Part of God, an Angel, etc.) who then became a human being. We believe that Jesus preexisted in God's mind, eternal plan and foreknowledge but came into literal existence when he was begotten in his mother Mary. Trinitarians and Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the "Son of God" was their preexisting being. We believe that Jesus was the human son of God. He was one of us in order to redeem the rest of us to God (Romans 5:17-19). To us then there is one God and God's human son Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5). The Father is the only true God and Jesus is his son the Christ (John 17:3, Matthew 16:16).

(Only God has all authority). At healing the paralytic: "Your sins have been forgiven you!" (Only God can forgive sins). "I am THE (not a) light of the world". ...God. "I have come to give you Zoë =divine life in abundance". (Only God can give Zoë life). Etc, etc. Conclusion of Paul after having revelation: "Jesus, the exact image of the invisible God. The fullness of deity dwells in Jesus bodily". John (who had seen, touched, heard Jesus): "the invisible God manifested in human form, in Christ". Thomas having revelation saying to Jesus: "My Lord and My God!". Jesus being God did NOT correct Him. Etc, etc, etc. And of course His life totally proves He is God in human form. Begotten by the Spirit of God, filled with the spirit of God, healing all, raising the dead, casting out demons, controlling nature, raised from the dead, pouring out His Spirit for us to be indwelled by to be empowered to heal the sick and cast out demons, etc, etc, etc. Hence the divine healing miracles and casting out of demons i experienced already thousands of times and many others too. Hang on. I don't have time to go through everything you wrote, but there are few points that stop short of the whole story here. You said: *I have come to give you Zoë =divine life in abundance". (Only God can give Zoë life).* But the Bible says, in John 5:26, "For as the Father has life in himself, _so he has granted the Son_ also to have life in himself." The Son has life and can give life not because He is God, but because the Father granted it to Him to have life in himself. You said: *ALL (!) AUTHORITY in heaven and earth have been given to Me!" (Only God has all authority)* But this just means God granted authority to Jesus. God has all authority, inherently, and He can thus grant authority to people. If Jesus is God, He would already have the authority, and not need it to be granted to Him. You said: *At healing the paralytic: "Your sins have been forgiven you!" (Only God can forgive sins).* But again, Matthew 9:8 says explicitly "When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man." Jesus didn't forgive sins because He was God. It's God who GAVE the authority to Jesus to forgive sins.

Brother, it was known already more than 300 years ago that this passage was corrupted during copying of the manuscripts. A scribe copied the word ος ("which") as θς (abbreviated form of θεος, "God"). So we should read (as many modern translations do): "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness, which was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory." This passage also makes much more sense that way, if you think about it. Peace.

John 10:34 Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I have said you are "gods"'? John 10:35 If he called them 'gods,' to whom the word of God came--and Scripture cannot be set aside-- John 10:36 what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'? i) Are they gods as in Divine God? he called them 'gods' ii) When accused of blasphemy, did Jesus respond with: "Is it not written in your Law..." Giving references to God descending as a man and there he is infront of them, here are all the references.... Or "Is it not written in your Law..." He called them gods without being Divine God. "Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'?" There is context to their accusation. They were planning to stone him, kill him and call it a legitimate accusation. John 8:40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. John 8:43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. John 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Does Jesus not expose such lies? "Is it not written in your Law..." "Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'?" ----------------------------------- Divine sacrifice or planned murder? (John 8:44) Did they get what they want, kill him? Did Jesus not pray to be saved from the plans of the wicked? Was his prayer answered? (Luke 22:41) He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, (Luke 22:42) "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." (Luke 22:43) An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. (Psalm 37:40) The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him. (Hebrews 5:7) During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.

If Jesus isn't "god" and he didn't pre-exist before his birth, and if he was made just like us, raised from amoung the Hebrew brethren, a prophet like unto Moses, then by scripture, he was not born only of a female, with no male XY chromosomes, and the virgin birth myth is an inseperable stumbling block of the of the Satanic Trinitarian deception that brethren need to let go of! Is Jesus human? Then he had a Female mother and a male father, JUST LIKE THE REST OF ALL HUMANITY, and GOD the Father is his spiritual father, just like the rest of us! The "virgin birth" is a misunderstanding of scripture! And it is no more real than is the immaculate conception! Except for Adam and Eve, being human necessitates a human mother and a father, and the scriptures tell us who that was, but people do not believe what they read. I'M HUMAN, I had a human father. Unlike what Brother Hemphill said, about Jesus, Jesus did too. Let go of the lies brothers and sisters. It will stregthen your faith.

If you think Jesus is human, but you think he had no human father, you are still trying to deify him into a human-god! Are you suggesting that GOD the Father couldn't take a normal human and make him the Messiah Jesus!? Is anything too hard for the LORD?

Joel Hemphill said in this video that some of the translations in the KJV are wrong. The word isn't wrong, but some of the translating is, and therefore the understanding based upon them is also twisted. To demonstrate this he used Philippians 2:5-11 and he said verse 6 is misleading, and then explained what it really means. Both these examples are evidence of Trinitarian translators misleading people with their lying Trinitarian translations. If you can understand that, you can understand that the hebrew word "alma" which was translated as "virgin" to push the Trinitarian narrative of the virgin birth. Alma really means young woman. You can determine the Virgin Birth myth isn't true because it is based upon Isaiah 7:14 as a dual prophecy, according to Matthew 1:22-23, and that means if Mary gave birth to a child with no man, then so did the prophetess in Isaiah's time. But we know that it not the case. This proves it it wrong in Jesus' case! Christianity is infected with the terminal cancer of Trinitarianism, and the Virgin Birth myth is part of that infection.

This is the truth, what’s a heresy is clearly stated by Jesus. You know what the heresy is, changing the laws of the prophets. You know not one should change, until heaven and earth pass. Jesus says explicitly that The Shema is the most important of all commandments. Was he a heretic?

If you do not believe in the full deity of the Lord Jesus Christ you cannot be saved. Yes Jesus was a man but he also was and is God. Romans 10:9, Titus 213, one Timothy 3:16. Yes God has revealed himself as father, son, and Holy Spirit. In Jesus dwells all the fullness of the Godhead or deity, Colossians 215

Jesus did not begin to exist at his birth. John 1:1 declares that the word always worse and verse 14 shows us that the word, Jesus, became flesh and dwelt among us. I am not saying that a full belief or understanding of the trinity is required to be saved, but a rejection of the Lord ship, or God heard of Jesus Christ is very very dangerous. Think about it. If Jesus we’re not both God and man, he would not be qualified to redeem us from sin. So hopefully those who reject it or just confused or something. The logic does not make much sense, because they believe he is the way to the father. They believe he is king and Messiah, but then they say they do not believe he is God. That doesn’t make any sense. This is true especially in Philippians two when Jesus receives worship. I know… it is not like they would bow toward one another in different cultures. This is worship that he receives with every knee bowing and every tongue confessing that he is lord. So it is not just an honor and a respect. Anyone who believes that Jesus is just a man cannot be saved, for a mirror human cannot pay for the sins of mankind. Jesus was both God and man who laid aside his God attributes while he was on the earth that will never cease to be God.@@faithfultheology you must believe that he is lord. I just gave song. John 8:58, Romans 1010 will get you started. He said if you do not believe that I am you will die in your sins. Those were the same words that he said to Moses “tell them I am sent you. “

Jesus was fully man and fully God. He is the express image of his person. Hebrews 1:3. God manifest in the flesh 1 Timothy 3:16. One mediator “the man Christ Jesus” the spirit of God made heaven and earth and created the flesh wherein he dwelt as our sacrifice and atonement. His holy child was his plan from the foundation of the world when he created free will and love. One lord one faith one baptism. I would gladly open the scriptures with in more detail and let the holy word of god speak for itself not man’s wisdom just the unadulterated word of God.

It's very sad that a oneness preacher for more than 50 years changes bible teaching of who God is and now starts to deny the divinity of Jesus. Makes me think did he ever understand or receive the revelation of Who God is? Sad indeed that he has chosen to allow the enemy to blind him and to lose the salvation that he had for more than 50 years. Lack of understanding of why God became a man. Lack of the oneness of God. The word of God to this person has become garbage to him for I don't see any difference between him and Jehovah's witnesses. May God help you and illuminate you back into the truth. Blessings

I'm actually with Brother Hemphill on this now. I too was Oneness but discovered that the Oneness Jesus is just another version of the Trinitarian Jesus. Our Oneness people of the early 20th century (and then the rest of us as time has gone by) all borrowed our doctrines of "Dual Nature" and "God-Man" and "100% God and 100% man" from our Trinitarian backgrounds. It's what they had always believed before developing Oneness ideas which are just a twist on the same themes.

@@acts2583 Oh dear, what are you talking about? This is due to lack of knowledge. the Oneness doctine is biblical however, the trinitarian Dogma came about around 400 years after the apostols. Even Tertulian who was a noted trinitarian writer in AD 160 stated that the mayority of the christians believed in the oneness message which numbers later decreased due to persecution of the roman empire supporting the trinitarian dogma. This really does upset me knowing that you have denied Jesus as God and are not saved this means that you never did receive the revelation of the name of Jesus and who he is. Please do reconsider as we are still in the time of grace to restore your salvation. Jesus is God and the demons know this and they TREMBLE. They know who he is but you have been easily moved by philosophical dogmatic winds of the enemy. I hope you receive the light because unless you believe that he is the "I AM" you will also die in your sins.
