Something I think backs up Mordian's point and generally a good thing to remember: Enjoying the game is much more important than winning games! You can have the most meta list that theoretically smashes supermajors every time, but if you don't enjoy playing it, it's time to switch it up or take a break.

For real, I’m a new player. Didn’t get into it from the lore and I’m not a narrative player. I definitely care too much about winning. I’m glad to be around a great group of people. One specifically is a really good player but a narrative player too. Who’s been helping me through a lot of it.

I’ve sort of had the opposite experience as in the Dark Eldar situation with His Imperial Guard. Everyone I go people are constantly saying “Guard is a strong faction, Guard is a top 5 faction,” and so on. Yet myself and the other Guard player in my local area have yet to even go 2-1 in the 6 events I’ve attended. With exception of not taking Naked Deathwing Knights, which I never take because I think Bullgyrn are stupid and thoroughly un-Imperial Guard, I take good lists which usually start by copying a Mordian Glory list and tweaking it to fit my collection and local meta. With how many Melee armies there are around here I take Demolishers over Battle tanks for instance. Yet I’ve seen my own personal winrate actually go *down* over time rather than up, even as my experience and understanding of the game increases. Yet the IG winrate goes up and has stabilized at 50+

My last game was against Eldar. He got first turn, heavily damaged one of my Rogal Dorns and destroyed a Tank Commander in a Demolisher. I brought basically a tank company so I have another Rogal Dorn and 4 Russ's and another Tank commander. I destroyed about 800pts of his army when it came to my turn one. He threw in the towel as I had effectively destroyed his center and a sizeable chunk of his army. I do think Guard can be a top faction but I'm going in a completely different direction by avoiding Bullgryns/Ogryns and not messing with Scions. I don't have luck trying to fight the enemy with melee or trying to slip in and hope to steal away an objective. That seems like a lot of work and a gamble. I've tried all the neat tricks but in the end, I find just raw fire power coupled with Fields of Fire and Withering Hail from Exterminators minimize my exposure and bring in the best returns. We'll see how all of that changes when the codex finally drops and how they have changed Guard and what units were cut.

Sometimes you can just run into hard counters. I haven't played since 6th. But I used to run a Grey Knights army that use Coteaz (turned henchmen into troops), and 6 units of 5 jokaro weaponsmiths inside chimeras. That was the basic list to 1500 points, then riflemen dreads going up from there. It was a 100% hard counter to Tyranids at the time. Literally never lost to them in normal play or tournaments. Easily over 100 games just in monkeys vs nids. The combination of medium weapons in multi-lasers and heavy bolters, with lascannons and heavy flamers from the monkeys. Big bugs get the lasers, swarmy bugs get the flamers. Flyers get the chimera's guns until they got hit and fell down. Then they got the lasers. It was brutal, and I stopped playing it against nids except in tournaments. Could be you are just in that situation. I've also had games I should have won go bad because the dice went cold. Like rolling average equals a win, and my dice roll nothing but 2s. Because I had reroll 1s to hit and my dice were giving me the finger. Played against a dark eldar player. His commander had the 2+ invul item that poofs as soon as you fail one of the saves. Lost it first shot of the game. So yeah, sometimes the dice just say FU. Sometimes it's just the matchup. Could also be terrain. Too much and melee armies get the advantage. Too little and the shooty armies do. Making a piece impassible can also change the game. Going around instead of through can make a big difference. Back then there were no rules on objective size. That can make a difference as well. Small enough marker and I can park a land raider on top of it and now you can't contest (at least at the time I have no clue now). Big enough marker and now I have to wipe that unit out because I can't block it. There are some minor things that can make a difference. You also might just need to put some money aside and buy new units. Like instead of 2 tanks, maybe you need 5 or 6. Maybe you don't have any basilisks and that is the trick that is keeping you from winning. Proxy stuff until you find out what works. Fuck it, proxy a warhound and see what happens. Proxy a couple of baneblades (or variants). Maybe take a couple units like catachan and move them up the board fast and get in the opponents way, charge the World Eaters.

Reporting for duty , Sir o7 There was a time in 4th edition you had to be 1st or 2nd to even go to a GT , 3rd was on stand by in case 1st or 2nd could not go I came in 2nd and could not go , 3rd place , with his Necrons , went in my place and won the GT I still hear about it , as trophy is in a display case in local store ( from 1997 , The" Bookery" in Fairborn , Ohio US was local RTS meta )

It will seem completely unrelated, but I feel a similar issue can sprout up in MtG. Magic can be a fun card game, but it has a number of different formats you can play, and the hypothetically most popular one is EDH, or Commander. Whole other formats have received products that are, at least co-opted for, or basically entirely designed for, EDH, even if the product advertised for Modern, Standard, or something else. Commander doesn't have official tournaments, so collecting "competitive" data can be different, but most people who are playing not at a tourney are playing this very different format, and if Hasbro, till all are one, wants to make the most profit, every one of their many products needs to appeal to their largest play base, so it does, bur then tournament play, where the "best players" go for prizes, doesn't reflect this style, or its best/worst stuff, so it can be tricky to know what stuff is really doing best, or going to be most in demand. If you want to play professionally, you basically need a deck for Standard, Modern, Vintage, or Legacy, but if you are just playing at home, for fun, you are much more likely playing Commander, which has completely different rules, and ways to do things, but which is TEALLY more important?

This is something that used to happen in other competetive games too, until They developed a rigorous ELO system, e.g. Overwatch and chess. A lot of content creators for those games make content specifically for the mid-range and lower ELOs as well; not just for the highest possible levels of play. I think this is 40k's problem at the moment. Every content creator just follows Art of War; hyper focusing on the absolute best players in the highest ELO, and ignoring all the other ELOs. I've yet to see any 40k creator explicity say "here's what's happening in the mid GTs/ the mid ELOs, and here's what's winning in RTTs/ in the low ELOs" etc A gap in the market place Mr Mordian could fill nicely

The best 40K faction imo is the one the individual player themselves enjoys playing the most, regardless of whatever stats. Just taking myself as an example, there are some factions that I don’t like the overall aesthetic of so likely will never play, regardless of how the 0.01% of “top” players view them - if I won’t enjoy painting it, especially being a slow Painter it just won’t get bought, let alone played.

RTTs are by far my favorite events. If i really wanted to i could do 4 a month, almost every weekend within a 20 mile radius. GTs are cool because you get to contribute to the meta data.
