Controversy around Prince Harry being nominated for Pat Tillman Award in ESPY

There has been controversy around Prince Harry being nominated for the Pat Tillman Award in the ESPY Awards.
"The Pat Tillman Award is like a very prestigious honour, it honours a former NFL player who left the sport to go and fight in Afghanistan in 9/11 and fortunately he died in combat," says SkyNews.com.au Digital Reporter Reilly Sullivan.
"So certainly there's a sombre aspect to it, but it's really given to people who do significant things in the charity world and I think that for Harry I mean he's getting it in recognition of Invictus.
"But certainly some people have come out - Piers Morgan was one, even family members of Pat Tillman said they didn't think it was appropriate that Harry's getting the award."

Sir Keith Mills (London Olympics and Paralympics) led the coallition that founded Invictus. Along with Mills team, there was a Palace team of Royal Foundation staff led by William POW and Catherine POW, and an MOD team. Harry contibuted by telling Prince Philip about veterans wanting a UK version of Wounded Warriors.

Ok let's separate the art from the artist here: I personally don't understand or support the manner in which Prince Harry has split from the royal family and turned his own life into a toe-curling soap opera. Regardless of that, the impact he's had on wounded warriors sure deserves to be recognized. But I also happen to believe, this kind of recognition comes to soon. The 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games is worth celebrating, just not with that big kind of trophy, which seems to be more of a PR decision by ESPN. Most importantly, I see the point of Tillman's mother that other guiding figures in this society have been working much longer and under very different circumstances: "These individuals do not have the money, resources, connections or privilege that Prince Harry has. I feel that those types of individuals should be recognized (first)."

If Pat Tillman’s own mother has publicly said he doesn’t deserve this award then ESPN should honor her wishes. He should not attend and ask for the award to be given to a worthy veteran instead. That would be the dignified thing to do 🤨

These detractors should create their own award and give to whomever they want. Did Harry nominate himself? Harry is the founder of The Invictus Games, an international multi-sport event first held in 2014, for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, both serving and veterans. The Pat Tillman Award, was set up by ESPN in 2014 to recognize people It is given to people who use their connection to the sports world to positively impact the lives of others. Harry is an ex-serviceman & ESPN are awarding him for his work on Invictus Games & the impact it has had on the veteran community.
