I think Kelly completely misses the point re the ABC. Corporate and private outlets do have a position. But the ABC borrows a special prestige - which has nothing to with anyone working there - and as such it has a duty to impartiality.
@NorfolkSceptic3 жыл бұрын
Kelly has all the right ingredients yet, as you say, misses the point: he doesn't want to win the argument. It's as though the Left's agenda won't affect him or his family. He says the Left is more dangerous than the Right and wants to destroy all that has gone before in our culture. Yet is very critical of Trump, who is trying to ' fix the problem'. Who else is there? As we can see, it's going to take more than one battle to win the war, so we need a think skined winner. And, if we only have one available, there's no alternative, and even he might not be successful. :) And, in the mean time, we have to endure the drip, drip, drip of the ABC and the BBC, and we have to pay for it! In the US, the deluge now includes Fox! The Left have infiltrated most of our Establishments, so there is no time to lose. Maybe Kelly's academic connections, mentioned at the beginning, have had an effect. :)

In Canada, we have the equally toxic CBC as our public broadcaster. At one time, it did provide somewhat balanced news and programming. Within the past five years (coincident, it appears, with the election of the current prime minister) it has become unwatchable for anyone that is not a hard leftist. Public broadcasters that are funded by taxpayers from all political perspectives have a duty to be balanced in their information. Instead, they have become propaganda machines for all that is wrong in this world.

@@martinliehs2513 I agree. 20 years ago I moved ti Canada, but returned to Australia. Canada is 3 years ahead of Australia in forfeiting freedoms and committing suicide. It is the more polite thing to do!

I'm sorry but how can we possibly be united as a people with the slow degradation of the national culture & the divisive introduction or better described as "mandated" multiculturalism ?

Thanks John & Paul for a great discussion. A comment re ABC & it's hard left/progessive leaning. It amazes me that the coalition can actually win elections despite having the ABC, with its massive reach & persuasive capacity , against it.

I greatly appreciate Mr Kelly who for me symbolises "old fashioned" journalism. I disagree with Mr Kelly that our cultural tradition is more valuable and fundamental to the success of our society than religion i.e. genuine faith by individuals in the God and Father of Jesus Christ. This faith saves not only from eternal death (the penalty for sins) but also from the power of sin which is the root cause of self-centredness (ME culture). Also Mr Kelly seems to gloss over the ABC's continual and extreme left-wing bias in constant breach of its charter. ABC management, current affairs presenters, editors, commentators and journalists are brazen and unapologetic in their activism yet happy all the while for conservatives to pay their salaries. The sooner this situation ends the better! An interesting and enjoyable interview. Thanks!

Great talk. Very well thought out he seems to be reasonably impartial. I would disagree with him though that if we could return to cultural traditions we would be able to heal the current discord. Cultural traditions seem to me to be layered on top of Christian values which John earlier said were the glue that was holding society together. We have to look at which side walked away from that and is trying to normalize non-Christian values. Sin itself is being re-defined as virtue. As long as that is the case the Christians will not compromise. But of course the Bible said that was going to happen.

It seems that we are experiencing a similar issue in regard to our state funded National Radio here in NZ, minus much of the critisism the ABC seems to be receiving in Australia.

Paul Kelly talks about the threats from Left and Right in the US and also the decline of faith and the Big Me. The Right and populist conservatives in America seem to be more connected to faith and God than the progressive left. I don't see the Right as being nearly as dangerous or a threat as the modern Left is in 2020. The xenophobic charge was inaccurate, sure in some cases but economic nationalism and closing borders to protect low income workers isn't xenophobia.

Paul Kelly started out strong, stating what the journalistic principles should be. THEN he gave the liberal media a way out of taking responsibility for not presenting all of the news instead of just the news that supports their agenda by saying: All news media has a political bent. . . it can't help but polarize the people watching . . .that is just the way of the modern world. This goes against his journalist principle that you should try to be unbiased. If you are leaving out information on purpose, you are NOT TRYING to be unbiased. Also, I saw where this kid secretly interviewed a person that works at a mainstream media new organization and they said that the programs were all for show. That it was all about ratings. That they would never be so naive as to think that the news is anything other than that again. I wish youtube still had that video up, I would put a link to it.

Paul wants a rekindling of our cultural traditions, yet wants the same old liberalism that embraces all cultures and traditions and says that they are of equal value. These two positions are mutually exclusive. This is the fundamental flaw in liberalism and why Australian culture, and Western culture more generally, is in terminal decline. This contradiction is also peak Boomerism. Few of the newly arrived cultures undermine their own values by conforming to Australian norms, and they thrive because of it. The identitarian left backs them in this endeavour to the hilt. Yet here we are with our own culture flickering and sputtering in the dark, but, if you speak up to support it...

The business model of news was in crisis so journalists had to start reporting fake news as directed by Rupert Murdoch. Oh please!

The only way Australian journalism has evolved over the last 30 years is that it has leaned to a dangerous point of whatever the fuck Rupert Murdoch wants. Seriously Paul and John talking about journalism, I am going to find my hat so I can eat it.

Is this guy clueless? @35:40 The reason why Gen Z and Millennials are more about "me" than the mythical "greatest generation" is the world is more competitive now than it was just after WW2. The so-called greatest generation were selfish when it came to policy but not their personality. They voted for the Hart-Cellar Act and expanded welfare and SSI. Those policies they benefitted from at the expense of their grandchildren and great grandchildren. His parents generation didn't have foreign imports of both goods and labor constantly under cutting margins. It was very ethnically homogenous so the social capital was at it's highest in history. If one had ambitions, the greatest generation had affordable college, housing, and plentiful jobs that paid well. People are more selfish today based on self-preservation more than anything. I swear the more I listen to these activists masquerading as journalists, the more I realize how absolutely clueless they are. *Cringe*
