I did a paddle shift conversion to my R33 GT-R over a decade ago. MoTeC ECU + Holinger GTR6 + Shiftec pneumatic System + DBW and paddles rotate with the CF steering wheel and the wheel is also removable. From someone who’s driven them for 10 years, it is a complete game changer for high powered Skyline GT-Rs and worth the investment IMHO. Personally, I preferred to keep the gear lever as well as backup but that’s just my preference. Well done guys! 👍

It is cool. But sometimes being more involved in the operation of a machine, the more ‘connected’ you feel with it. And to it. Using heal/toe to blip the throttle through 2 downshifts as you brake firmly for a corner on your favourite sat morn spin route.... When in a proper car. I dunno... I know damn well it’s slower but... sometimes just skipping through your fav twisties at 6 to 7/10th’s on a nice day is what its about. Same reason I believe auto’s belong in drag cars and the wifes handy shopping trolley. It’s like art in a way when you are travelling briskly and multitasking different operational controls to ‘interface’ one’s senses with the machine, being in complete control of the machines behaviour and having it behave perfectly through sections of road that deliver some relaxing-exhilarating sensations to the body/mind. (and with ample room to spare for the unexpected.) that to most other people, (increasingly so...) It feels a little like art, cause there is so much going on that you are directly and completely in control of yet, for the most part, you do not consciously ‘think’ of them as you do them as your mind escapes everything else for the moment to completely focus its processing capacity entirely on the the ‘input’ sensory information it is receiving and the vast majority of ‘output’ info and function are taken care of by your subconscious, for the most part. It’s definitely a long and carefully learned skill so it seems more enjoyable to mesh with it more on many/most real world environments situations. This is evidenced by the fact that at just 6/10ths, one is travelling along at a significantly higher rate than 90-99.9% of the other vehicles and is perceived as nothing more than dangerous, reckless and aggressive behaviour. Some of us, from early childhood have enjoyed our parents possessing such skills and have spent most nearly our entire lives building these skill sets for ourselves and the machines to use them with. Daily. So unless your build is a large part of your life, as are track days and/or race/club meets, less is more sometimes. Don’t get me wrong they are fun porn and I the voice desperately wants it, but the $$ and headaches required to have it bought, installed, configured, customised and maintained would make it unsuitable for nearly all street/sport drivers once it was FINALLY sorted completely and enjoyed for a while until the novelty wears off and we understand the cons a bit better, without the voice convincing us that they are f’ck all compared to all the cool shit it has/does...

Why do you even need an ECU to do the signaling for the paddles, when, for electric actuators, your paddles could push on buttons that turn on power to the actuators directly? Or on electropneumatic, your paddles could push buttons that turn on power to the solenoids that open the air valves directly and then spring them closed after the shift, etc. (while maybe the ECU still runs the throttle or ignition for you)?

Tests like this happen when a shop or customer develop it: we don’t have the budget to just swap out gearbox of different brands and they’re not cheap! It will be similar just a lot of gearbox noise. PPG and OS are the choice for a street driven car.

Motive Video thanks for the reply. Personally I’ve had many issues with the OS88 and abandoned it, favouring the Holinger GTR6. Apart from snapping input shafts due to high torque loading, the box has been much better than the alternatives. I can understand why the helical gearset is preferential and obviously reverse is inline or you’d need an additional actuator. What full cycle closed loop shift speeds are you logging on full load?
