After 15 years of nonstop issues...throttle body electrical, sensor, regulator, etc., ...I'm done with TBI. I love my old truck , a 94 chevy 454, but hate TBI with a passion. When I was young I had a 79 ford f150. Just a plain old 4 barrel carb, on an edlebrock manifold and that motor always ran...no issues. Thanks for the video Brother. I'm changing back to carb.👍

Rusty just seen your video. I’m in the tree business and my Son and I have a 1997 gmc top kick with a 366 gas engine with a throttle body. It is our main bucket truck we use in our business. It starts but idles very roughly for 5 minutes or so then it smoothes out enough for us to drive to the job site to do our work. We have a pony motor that operates the hydraulics to run the boom. We have been having issues with it for around 6 months now. We’ve spent $3 to $4,000 on it so far changing out everything there was to change out. All the sensors, new throttle body gasket, tune up of plugs, wires, distributor, fuel pump, coil and everything else we could think of. We have someone who done this on a truck like ours and he said it runs great. He is going to do this to our truck. I’m glad I seen your video p, it was very encouraging to me. We are hoping to get our motor running great again. The only has about 105,000 miles on it. Thanks for your video, Steve Miller

Fun fact the tbi cams HAVE THE FUEL PUMP LOBE. ALL U NEED IS THE SHAFT. PUMP AND GASKET. PROBLEMS SOLVED FOR EVER. NOT ONLY THAT. But your fuckin factory pump pushes way to much fuel pressure to a carb thats ment to get 5psi really of pressure. Ur gonna ruin ur carb and constantly have issues. Everyone has different answers. Can I remove the return line, I do believe I can. Can you help me out? Thank you in advance. Mike F..
@tlariscy Жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, you should just use the existing fuel pump that is in the fuel tank and use the pressure and return lines that hook up to your TBI. You will need to run the pressure line through a high end fuel pressure regulator and dial the fuel pressure down to about 6psi. That being said you will want a pressure regulator with a bypass, it will have three hook up’s. One for the pressure line from the tank, one with the regulated pressure going to the carb and the bypass going to the return line for fuel tank. Pay special attention to the part in video about wiring up the tach connection to HEI distributor. This function is what regulates the fuel pump turning on and off based upon engine RPM. Skip this part and you will be able to start engine but it will shut off when carb runs out of fuel because fuel pump did not continue to supply fuel past the initial prime up when you turned on your key. Hope this helps.

Was just now fighting trying to figure out how to power the fuel pump, our only hurdle before starting this motor. If I understand correctly, and its great information, all I need to do is run that wire from the distributor plug to the tac wire from the coil And the fuel pump will operate normally?

@@tlariscy Thank you so much for the very valuable information. We took the info in your video and were able to finish up the minor wiring for the distributor and the fuel pump in just a few minutes. We did get the engine fired but are having a bit of a vacuum leak issue we are working on. One thing we have different, another post had referenced the part number for a mechanical fuel pump that they used in tandem with the electric. The tandem fuel pump has a return and according to the poster it automatically regulated the fuel down to the 5 psi needed for the carburetor. We have everything hooked up, it appears to be working but at this point I believe I'm going to add a regulator between the mechanical pump and the carburetor for safety.

@@joerodriguez2180 hi Joe, I considered doing the same thing, I just didn’t know how the factory fuel pump/ sending unit/ fuel pick up in the fuel tank would work with the mechanical fuel pump trying to draw fuel through it. It may work but without replacing the electric fuel pump with a pass on through tube I couldn’t say if this will work. It may but I’m not sure. Hope this helps.

When you hooked up the purple and white wire to the tach port did you still have a functional tach?

I did this conversion with a 1990 7.4 l k3500. My truck got no spark with a regular hei distributer, so I switched back to the stock distributor with the coil. Now I get spark but the fuel pump is not turning or staying on. So it will slowly sputter a couple times then die. How can I energize the fuel pump?
@tlariscy4 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith, first make sure that you had the larger red wire from the distributor harness hooked to the (+ or POS) on the HEI . This is to power your HEI. Then the purple wire with white stripe from the same harness will hook to the TACH port on the HEI, this will send the engine speed signal to the fuel pump to run accordingly. Hope this helps.
@keithlove854 жыл бұрын
Yes I hooked the purple with white stripe to the tach port and no spark at all. The original type distributer has worked the best. I'm purchasing an electric pump before I pull all my hair out...wait I'm bald already LOL!

@tlariscy5 жыл бұрын
Hi the easy way to do this is to put a manual switch to activate the lock up from the dash of your vehicle. here is a link that explains it, itstillruns.com/wire-switch-lock-up-torque-converter-700r-transmission-11372151.html hope this helps

so what adapters and hard lines do I need to connect the existing fuel lines? i have a 305 5.0 firebird TBI that I want to convert to carb I have the intake, carb and hei already
@tlariscy3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I just cut the ends off of the metal lines and used rubber fuel lines with hose clamps. The pressure is not that high because of the bypass in the regulator. It sends all fuel in excess of the 6-8 psi back to the fuel tank.

@@tlariscy so where sould I connect the power for an electric choke? and what about power for the HEI, and factory tach, where do I connect the wiring for distributor and factory tach? Only asking becuase there seems to be 100 different answers and I don't know which is the safest, and best way?
@tlariscy3 жыл бұрын
@William McCoy Great questions, the power for electric choke can be any 12 v source that is switched from ignition switch. I spliced mine into the power wire for the distributor. The power wire should be in the harness that connected to the original distributor. As far as factory tach, you may have to look at some schematics for your vehicle as mine did not have a factory tach in the instrument cluster. But my guess is that the wire should be in the factory harness that connected to the distributor as the engine did not have any other engine speed sensors. So the ECM must get engine speed from the distributor. Hope this helps.
@tlariscy3 жыл бұрын
@ William McCoy, another thought is that the tach signal is derived from the wire I recommended to connect to the tach port on HEI distributor. I’m almost certain that it sends signal to ECM and then the ECM controls the fuel pump from there, the ECM may then send the tach signal to instrument panel. Not for sure but just a hunch.

Wouldn't you need a fuel regulator because with the pump coming on wouldn't that be too much fuel for carb

Hello Mr. Lariscy. I have to ask you another question. I will be sending quite far from the US the parts that I will order for my conversion so I need to make sure that what I buy is what I need. In the case of the Intake manifold the edelbrock 2104 is the one that goes well with the cast iron heads on my 1988 350 5.7 L engine? Thank you again.
@tlariscy4 жыл бұрын
The four center holes on intake are straight up and down on the TBI heads that’s the only difference as far as I know. Not sure if your heads have the older style center holes that are the same angle as the others.

@tlariscy2 жыл бұрын
The only thing controlled by eco is the torque converter lock up on 700 r4. To control torque converter lock up you will have to either install a separate aftermarket controller or just wire a switch that you can manually actuate from toe cab when you want the lock up to engage. This is a work around. Personally I would install a TH350 transmission and be rid of all computer components. Hope this helps you in your search for info.

@@tlariscy sorry this may be a crazy question but what happens when the torque converter locks up on these year model trucks
@tlariscy2 жыл бұрын
@@zackpalmer6474 older torque converters have an amount of slip, lock up torque converters fully engage the engine 1:1 like a clutch on a manual transmission but unlock when there is no demand for power. This increases gas mileage and keeps the transmission from stopping the engine by releasing and slipping. You can run without the lock up feature but will have decreased fuel mileage at highway speeds.
