this is correct, i think people are recommending masks (specifically n95 or p100 filtration levels) to reduce inhalation of smoke particles, not necessarily gases. these masks cannot filter gases, you would need an elastomeric respirator and appropriate cartridges for that. i don't know if a standard surgical mask could really filter out much of anything but large particles like dust or pollen, and definitely not with a seal that loose.

I see the fire department set up a ladder pipe using water to extinguish a fire. Bad option because water caused the plum to spread and grow. I'd worry if I was right in the Conyers area but I think if you stay in at the surrounding counties you should okay. I feel like you get the same chlorine affect when you're in the pool too long... but aerated chlorine in high doses can be fatal so watch out. Even an N95 can't block out gases like oxygen, chlorine, hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. They can all pass freely in the spaces between the fibers in an N95 mask. It's best to stay inside while minimizing out air currents ti the indoors and wait for it to dissipate. Also, I think it's already affecting the reporter as she can't clear;y state her name. She bett get outta there!! That mask isn't doing nothing but a placebo effect. And N95 won't block gasses.

The mask she's wearing is theater and also useless in this situation. She was the only one in the entire video wearing a mask of that type. The gas mask in her left hand is the proper choice however unless trained to properly fit and seal the mask to your face, it too will be useless. About 60 to 70% of those trained will fail to fit it properly their first try in a live gas training exercise. Just do the reporting and leave the acting and virtue signaling to the professionals.
