I am bummed, but I will find another recipe and try again!
www.mauifarmlet...
Wikipedia says: Hawaiian dessert made primarily from mashed taro corms and either grated coconut meat or coconut milk. Considered a pudding, kulolo has a solid consistency like fudge and is often served cut into squares. Its consistency is also described as being chewy and lumpy like tapioca, and its taste something like caramel. I don't know about it tasting like caramel. Just think coconut milk and brown sugar, just slightly more earthy. That's about the best I can do.
4 cups taro root, grated
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup honey
1 cup coconut milk
2 ti leaves
Mix all the ingredients together.
Line a bread baking pan with foil, and then with ti leaves. After pouring in the kulolo, cover the top with ti leaves and foil before baking for 2 hours in 400 degrees. Remove the foil and top layer of ti leaves for the last 30 minutes to allow the kulolo to brown.
I do not think that I got the taro grated down as small as it should have been. I bought the taro pieced so grating would have been horrible. I will see an entire root so I can grate it properly and try again, promise. So many people have requested that I make kulolo. Try & try again!

I wonder if it was the honey that made it mush. Can't wait to see the next attempt. I like that you always show a fail. It also keeps someone else from trying that recipe. :-)

I agree with the others who said they appreciate the fact that you post your "fails". I'm not sure if anyone else even does that, but it's helpful!

it kinda looked like mushy bodbod or kulolo tapioca. you didn't mention how it tasted. it only failed because it didn't meet your expectations, but if it taste good, then consider it a new creation. where is the next try?

One thing I remember about my grandfather's kulolo was that it was never deeper than 1 inch thick. Not sure if that would help, but it was always in shallow pan.

I loved this video because in reality this is how we learn what to and what not to do in cooking. I can imagine that it tasted ok, just didn't turn out the way that you would have liked. Love your vids.

Well, at least you tried & made the effort! In the late 50's to early 90's, my dad made Kulolo every time when we made the Imu to kalua pig! Most of my family didn't pay much attention to the measurements ratio of the Kulolo recipe! But, now since my dad has pass away, no one knows the exact measurement. All I know is he added Diamond Head Strawberry Soda, I kid you not, it gave a nice reddish color and exceptional taste!

i think this is almost the same dish as the one we call blue draws in jamaica. The only difference is the filling is completely wrapped in banana leaves and then steamed, not baked. It makes a very dense but yummilicous goodie. lol keep trying beth! that's how we learn :)

I do the same way and use food processor. You have to cool at room temperature and then put in the fridge for it to harden prior to trying to remove from pan. That's what happens because still hot.

This may seem like a stupid question, but is the video supposed to be green and flashy at around the 5 min. mark, or is that just something going wrong with my computer? I'm new to watching this channel, so I realize that the green flashing might be Beth's "thing" on fail videos, but I just don't know, anyone able to help me out?

Honestly I think most of the problem might have been leaving the Ti leaf on after the first 1 and half hours. I've never cooked this of course but i do know when I want to dry something out a bit I take the stuff off the top. I don't know probably has nothing to do with it just a thought. : ) Looks kinda like those yummy yummy girl scout cookies. Should've rolled some cookies in the final product. Yum yum!

Is it supposed to be like a bread consistency? Did it taste right? Or was it too icky to even try? Yeah, grating those little pieces would have been an EPIC fail. I say good try. People who really want to learn will get as much from the fails as from successes. Haters gonna hate but they are the losers.

My moms crack head cousin makes really good kulolo but he's a crack head and only makes kulolo when he's not flying high... I do know that he steams his kulolo in a steamer and he uses all the ingredients you had there... What if you tried baking in it a water bath? or buy a small steamer? I have a recipe I found on aloha world I will post it here so you can look at it....

If you tried grating that, you'd have more finger in there than taro. Without digging into comments, it appears that you've picked up a wacko or two. Isn't it fun to be popular? LOL I'm obviously clueless about how this recipe is *supposed* to work, but it just looks to me like there's nothing in there that would cause it to turn "brownie-like." Like flour or something? Or maybe the taro is supposed to do that? I dunno...
