There is nothing quite like a hot steaming Belizean meat pie for breakfast. Although these are very popular for breakfast they can also be eaten as a snack throughout the day.
⬇️⬇️⬇️ RECIPE BELOW ⬇️⬇️⬇️
👩🏻‍🍳 BELIZEAN MEAT PIES
👩🏻‍🍳 DOUGH
2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
¾ teaspoon salt
½ cup shortening
1 egg
2/3 cup water
👩🏻‍🍳 FILLING
½ pound ground beef
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon thyme
¼ cup onion, finely chopped
¼ cup green bell pepper, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1 teaspoon recado + water to dissolve
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 ½ cups water
1 tablespoon cornstarch + 1 tablespoon water
Habanero (optional)
Bake at 375 F or 190 C for 25 minutes. This recipe makes 12 meat pies.

There was this photographer on Albert Street in Belize married to this Asian lady, who made the best meat pies in the he city. Their business was in front of Brodies supermarket. When I see your meat pies it reminds me of these folks. Thank you for sharing your recipes with us. Reminds me of back home. Haven't been back in 30 years.

Which gluten free flour and, how much water because, with gluten free flours, it’s sometimes more or less water.

whenever I try to make meat pies, my dough always comes out too thick 🤦🏾‍♀️ your method/recipe looks perfect! Definitely giving this a try and sharing with my mom.

I am learning a lot from you, Mrs. Shirani. I always wanted to learn how to cook delicious meals but I can't. My sister always takes hold of the pot, and I have been busy with my studies too, so I don't have time to cook. My mom always tells me that I will one day have a husband and my own family, it would be a shame of you, if you don't know how to cook she would say.. I believe that's true, thank you so much. I love my Belizean food and I like the way you cook too. I'll make sure, I learn how to cook, although, Belize is classified as a third world country but I don't let that define my character. Good Lord! I miss Belize so bad! Meat pies for lunch at SJC were my everyday munch. Big hugs from CDMX from a mexican who happened to live in Belize City, back in 1986. My best teenage years.

Used your recipe tonight to make a dozen meat pies. I changed it just a bit. I added red pepper flakes and tomato paste instead of the ketchup. I also used Italian season coz I didn’t have any thyme on hand. It was juicy and very flavorful. 🥰

Raisin pie is one of my favourite pastries. Can you please share a recipe. I love your presentation. I still remember buying delicious raisin pie at Harlem Square on West Street in Belize city. Belizeans are good books. Who could resist Cowfoot soup made by the famous Joker in Belize?

I didn't find the measurements of the ingredients. It would be easier for me if you say the .measurements of each ingredient while putting each in the bowl.

You can customize it to your liking but Belizean meat pies are traditionally made with ground beef and no cheese.

Oh YUM!! Looked it up, and it says that ricado is a mixture of spices in Mexican and Beleazean cooking, with a mix of annatto, oregano ( I do have Mexican oregano), cumin, clove, cinnamon, black pepper, allspice, garlic, and salt. I can't wait!! I'll have to mix it myself, if I dont find it at the store in the Fiesta brand spices. This 5th generation Texan loves spicy foods. Sounds so very, very delicious! Thank you.

Another excellent recipe and video! I purchased a small wooden tampering tool from Amazon which I use frequently when trying to spread dough or crumb crusts in muffin tins or small spring form pans.

Hi dear, here it is for you. BELIZEAN MEAT PIES DOUGH 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder ¾ teaspoon salt ½ cup shortening 1 egg 2/3 cup water FILLING ½ pound ground beef ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon black pepper ½ teaspoon thyme ¼ cup onion, finely chopped ¼ cup green bell pepper, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 teaspoon recado + water to dissolve 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon ketchup 1 ½ cups water 1 tablespoon cornstarch + 1 tablespoon water Habanero (optional) Bake at 375 F or 190 C for 25 minutes. This recipe makes 12 meat pies

Does it matter the type of shortening? There are some made with veggies only and some with animal fats and does it matter if we use single acting or double acting baking powder. Sorry for all the questions lol

Oh no worries, you can ask questions. As long as I know the answer lol. You can use any type of shortening. I've used different ones and never had a problem. As for baking powder I didn't know they have single acting baking powder. I learned something today lol. I always use the double acting.

Hi Sara! You can use cooking oil, but it will change the texture of the dough. It will be harder to spread out.

What is shortening?

Hi Dear, shortening is similar to lard. Most shortening is made from vegetable fat while lard is made from pig fat. Hope that helps 😊.

Thank you so much. I'm so glad to hear you made my recipes 🥰. Make sure the dough rests a bit before you use it. Also, try not to over knead the dough. That will make it stiff. I hope that helps.

Oh man! These look amazing. How would I make the inside a bit more runny? I lived in San Ignacio for half a year and fell in love with these from a stand across Sacred Heart Primary in 2016 but inside was more runny. I also loved this spicy cabbage topping stuff. Gosh I miss Belize so much. Your food! And the street tacos I’d get like 3 for 1 dollar!

Thank you! I know a lot of people like them runny but I personally don't. To make it runny just add less cornstarch to it. I have a Belizean food playlist if you want to check that out.

I've never tried making it with oil before. You can use oil, but I think it will be harder to roll out.
