Start seeds in small containers as micro greens. A win win, pick the strongest seedlings to transfer into your larger containers and just harvest the rest (can usually get two or three micro green harvest from one tray)

I don’t eat out much so I just get some food saving containers at the dollar tree. There is no way I can collect all those containers since we make milk with milk powder, we don’t drink soda or juices from the store and I make my own iced tea and use mason jars and I cook from scratch. So $1.25 for a container works for me 😊❤

Hello, thanks for sharing. Can you please let me know how often we need to change the liquid?
@davinasquirrel7672
@davinasquirrel7672 4 ай бұрын
You do not need to 'change' the hydroponic nutrients, unless something goes wrong (usually algae). But you may need to 'replenish' the nutrient solution, which depends on the type of plant, the size of the reservoir. If you are growing something like a tomato, go for the 20L/5gall bucket at least, and you will definitely need to top it up, probably weekly. Something like a lettuce will only use (I hope I remember this correctly) about 5-6 litres for its entire grow, so if you have it in that sized container, you should not need to top it up at all. Algae only becomes a problem if light gets to the nutrient solution. You will notice that most containers shown were opaque, or had tinfoil wrapped around them.

I'm new to Kratky hydroponics and after watching many other videos, have come to similar methods as this video. The solutions summarized here are the most simple and least expensive way to do it with reusable household items. Is there a benefit to laying milk cartons horizontally vs just vertically and put the transplant in the normal smaller cap opening? It could save use of another pool noodle. A couple of downsides could be the diameter may be too small for thick plants, and thre water level changes more from top to bottom. Also any tips on how to check water levels in the coke cans and milk cartons other than lifting the whole plant regularly?
@healinghobbies
@healinghobbies Жыл бұрын
I am pleased to know that you were able to find helpful ideas in this video. I did tried both vertically and horizontally on the milk cartons. The only advantage laying it down is, it has a better support as the plant matures but either way works fine. With the water level, Since these containers are small, it's not necessary to install a water gauge for monitoring the water level. What I usually do is check them two weeks after transplanting and refill if needed. Typically, hydroponic plants takes off after two weeks as they become established in their new environment. I hope this helps!🌱🙂

Ahahaha, When I saw the cans, I just smiled and laughed so hard. My front yard is filled with cans with veggies growing in them. It's not as artisically set up as yours, but what works works, right? I have to know though. I ruined a good can opener trying to cut the tops off of cans. it still works for food cans but it won't open any more soda tops. Are you using a basic can opener to get your soda can tops off or some other device? ( Nevermind, I got ahead of the vid. I see you used a knife.) I gave up trying to open the tops and just put a wedge of pool noodle in the regular drinking opening with a sprout and let it go from there. Makes refilling hard, but by the time it needs a refill the plant has grown to young harvest size. If it works, right? Clever use of a steam cooker! I have been saving my almond milk cartons to do the same. I used ones since last year and they are starting to fall apart! They are really nice and dark and a good size. I hadn't thought to put a separate hole for the noodle but I can see how that would make refilling them easier via the spout, if needed.
@healinghobbies

Yes it doesn't have to be aesthetically appealing, what matters most is you are happy in the process and you love what you do. I can relate to removing those can lids 😀 my can opener won't work with those cans so I have to use a knife which is not so easy to use🙂🌱.

@healinghobbies
@healinghobbies Жыл бұрын
Mold in plants typically cause by poor ventilation or humidity imbalance. If you are growing indoors try to add fan in your set up to increase air circulation. Outdoor setups are less prone to such issues, although the nutrient solution in the container or reservoir may still experience some bacterial growth. One common cause of bacterial growth is heat, especially during summertime. The elevated temperatures can lead to reduced oxygen levels and limited ventilation within the reservoir, thereby promoting bacterial growth. Some methods I use to prevent this issues is to cover the reservoir with insulation or bury the container in the ground. Adding frozen bottled water helps too to keep the nutrient solution cool. I hope it helps!🌱🙂

How often do we have to change water ? If changed do we again add the same nutri content used ?
@healinghobbies
@healinghobbies Жыл бұрын
Depending on your set up, if you have a container of approximately 3 liters to a gallon, it will provide enough nutrient solution for your leafy greens until harvest. You won't need to refill or change the solution in this case. For smaller containers like soda cans, you can refill them at least 2-3 times until harvest without changing the nutrient solution. However, please note that this doesn't apply to every individual plant. If you're growing fruiting plants such as tomatoes, eggplants, or cucumbers in a 5-gallon bucket, the first refill will typically be needed around 4-5 weeks after transplanting. As the plants grow, blossom, and bear fruit, they will require more nutrients. In such cases, refilling at least twice a week should be sufficient. An important factor to consider when refilling your growing container or reservoir is to leave a gap of at least 2 inches between the base of the roots and the solution. This gap allows air roots to develop and prevents the plant from drowning. For plants with longer growth periods, it's necessary to clean or change the nutrient solution to avoid bacterial growth. In my experience, I typically clean and change the solution at least twice throughout the entire growing season or whenever it becomes necessary. I hope it helps!🌱🙂
