HardwareCanucks did an AiO vs air cooler video like a year ago using LGA 1151: air coolers produced better temps and were quieter.

@@geoli6407 Except gamer nexus is heavily biased towards water cooling. From my own personal tests, air beats water most of the time. There are exceptions but not great enough to warrant the hassle and risk of an AIO gamble. IMO for me to justify switching from Noctua to the AIO, the AIO has to definitively, unequivocally beat air, not just kinda beat air...sometimes. If AIO products get to the point where they can keep my temps below 30 even under load, then ill switch, otherwise there simply isn't enough of a reason to switch.

Its not that Aircooling is better, especially than overclocking - its more the fact that ALL AIOs do NOT even Cover the DIEs fully while the Noctuas contacts are build for TR4. So in the End the AIOs WOULD be way better especially handling OC and higher TPDs but since the Noctuas can work (as of now) way more efficient.. its basically a better way going for the small Noctua NOW and waiting for better AIOs designed for the large TR4 Surface. :)

I'm running 8700k @ 5.1Ghz, 1.375v currently (delidded). I get 60c-74c temperatures while playing CPU heavy games (BF1, PUBG). My fans are very low noise but they make huge air pressure for the radiator. One important note I forgot is that my radiator is mounted inside my cases front panel and my fans are attached inside the front panel so that they are pushing fresh air straight through the radiator. I tried using the radiator on the roof of the case while it was taking hot air from GPU. That made the CPU temps so much worse so there is no way I'm going back. In my scenario the GPU will get a little heated up air but in order to fix this I'm using sidepanel fan which brings fresh air directly to GPU.

A lot of cpu's are not designed to run hot enough under safe conditions if they were say 100"c any fan blowing on a heatsink/RAD would be more effective due to the bigger difference in temperature meaning more performance in terms of cooling. I feel the liquid coolers just didn't have the coverage needed. As with the gamers nexus coverage, even if the entire copper plate is used, it does not cover 100% of the surface area of the dies, there is a still a good 30% or so of the die that is left uncovered due to their design of 4 dies on the package.
