Just to add a tip that some might find useful. If you have the head off and want to check the engine for blockages use a small nylon cable tie. Push the tapered end of the cable tie through the actual holes in the block. Grab a flashlight, push the cable tie until you see the tip of cable tie exit that passage.You know that line is clean. Pull the tie out and move on to trace the next coolant hole.

I have 1973 Chrysler 30hp. at idle it pumps fine but at high speed it stops . If I go around 1/4 throttle its fine. Had it apart today everything looks fine water is coming up to the top. I checked for blockage nothing, No thermostat from the factory . Its been fine for years. I replaced the impeller this year and this started . But it pumps . I wish I had the old 25 Johnson back . Love your channel . Good information thanks for your love of old motors

Hi Mike, just to let you know I found the water passage blockage on my 3hp lightwin. Took the bottom cover off the powerhead and gasket. There is a water passage area that a hole was blocked with rust. I used a pick a got it through. The water should exit now through into the mid section now completing the water cooling flow. Probably why the guy sold it due to overheating. Just thought I would share this for folks who have this issue and gave up. 😄

Love your videos buddy. One thing you didnt mention is the thermostat can be old and stuck and block the passage. You can test by dropping in a pan of boiling water then under a cold faucet then back in the boilng water. You should see it open and close or maybe even free up. I have ran my 1975 6hp with no thermostat just to prove that was my problem.

good advice on chasing a blocked water passage. going through that right now on a 1965 3hp evinrude lightwin. the water tube is weird how it goes into the power head. not a good design. the tube is clean so checking the power head passages next.

Any idea if running a vintage outboard without the airbox has an effect on overall performance? Maybe it’s worth making a video if there’s a way you can compare it with/without airbox?

Hello first of all you've helped me out so much by watching your videos I think they're the greatest I'm a newbie I just bought 14 ft Larson fiberglass boat a 1963 it has a Mercury 50 horsepower 4 cylinder 2-cycle my question is the distributor rotates a quarter inch back and forth when I put it in neutral and raise the throttle the distributor moves to that position and stays there is that normal 4 the distributor to move back and forth like that. I really appreciate your answer. Thank you so very much Bill karras.

Hey Mike I got a 1972 6 hp Johnson I seem to have a wide-open thermostat my question is do you see the telltale even before the thermostat reaches the proper temperature so that you know your water pump is working well. Thanks Bill

@SherWood-wh4ij
@SherWood-wh4ij 2 жыл бұрын
I'd say that's the way it works Bill. Water comes out of the telltale right after starting when the engine is cold and the thermostat closed. I don't think that means for sure though that the water pump is working well, just that it's doing something. I had a couple of broken water pump impeller blades and there was still water coming out of the telltale but the engine ran hot.

If you continue to run the motor in a barrel, will the water circulating through the head continue to get hotter. I always have a water hose continously added cool water to the barrel.

Impeller must be under water - it’s not a pump sucking up water - it “impells” the water around it upwards - must be under water. Thx.

Hi Mike, I have the head on the 65 3hp evinrude lightwin broke down a put a water line to the entrance hole but no water is coming out anywhere? I think it should come out the 1/4" hole on the bottom of the powerhead? The 5 screw plate on the bottom will need to come off to chase the passage. Water does go through the exhaust passage and around the cylinders but that's it just sits there and doesn't exit. Motor is overheating so on the chasing it

Did you ever figure it out? I have the same motor and same problem
@TimsWorkshopTJY
@TimsWorkshopTJY 2 ай бұрын
I did figure it out and posted a video on my channel showing what I did. The passages inside we mostly plugged with hardened mud. I had to run a small drill through some of it to get the junk out. It lowered the temp to almost normal without getting too hot. I did try to test it on the lake and started right up but was lacking power and then died and could restart it so gave up. I bought a new head gasket for it since I just put the old one on that was pretty wasted. Will try it again someday after my other more priority stuff gets done.

I have a problem with my Mercury 35hp. I start it in a barrel but there’s no water coming out. I checked the tell tale and saw a small piece of rubber just sitting at the exit of the hole. I removed it, started the engine again, and another piece came out. Removed that one too, started it again, still no water. It must be impeller pieces. What should I do now? You think compressed air could get them all out?
