Chicago Mark here. Thanks T Mike for the great video. I did remove the flywheel from my 73 evinrude 18 hp using your method. Thanks again.

Hello from Alaska T-Mike!!!!!! I just got a 30hp Johnson outboard that my brother gave to me it was all wired and set up for gear box and everything so i converted it to manual start and everything you need to do to get it back to a "OLD SCHOOL" outboard and I had never worked on a outboard before, i am 34 and yes I am fine with admitting that i need a lesson from time to time, and now from watching a few videos of yours i can say with ALL DO RESPECT! That I will be coming to T-MIKE for help. you are helping me set up before winter i thank you T!

As a blacksmith, I can confirm these were "gentle" taps. :) I'll have to do this operation on my Sport Twin too. Just today I had a very stubborn 1964 Seahorse 3 HP. I can tell you I didn't think she would put up such a fight. Finally, after some gentle taps she gave in. ...what a relief! I was worried the small 1/4" bolts would strip before the flywheel popped off. That flywheel probably sat there since 1964.

It worked. I have a 1975 Evinrude 85 hp outboard and the flywheel was so tight. Looked up what to do with a stuck flywheel and your vid was the first one. It took about 5 cycles of thumping with the 5 pound sledge then tightening slightly. Finally popped off. Replaced stator, ignition coils and rectifier. Fixed all the issues I had.

Your videos are awesome and so helpful! I was hesitant to keep cranking with my fly wheel puller, worrying I would strip the bolts. This video helped me get me get my stuck fly wheel off after 3 rounds Keep the videos coming!

You can use a brass rod to hit on top of puller with you hammer or get a brass hammer. Brass is softer and shouldn't damage your puller. Thanks for the tips.

thanks so much for the hammer T Mike Special, it worked perfect! appreciate all the good info! Keep it coming!

I would file or use a small grinder to make the top of the puller able to use a socket wrench again. I also like the 3 whack trick then retighten the bolt. Thanks.

Mike. Excellent video as always. I find that sliding in shims to lift the flywheel helps too. That gives the crankshaft a little room to “drop” out of the flywheel. Do you EVER use heat? Doesn’t the heat demagnetize the magnets?

Anytime that I have removed a flywheel prior to reinstalling I used anti seize to make it easier to remove the next time. Yes the crack shaft is tapered as well as the flywheel it really does not have fit snug like tapered tool in a lathe or drill press. I have also had success removing the stuck flywheel by tapping on the perimeter of the flywheel rather than on the top of flywheel puller. And if really necessary I will evenly heat the flywheel but not too hot!😀🛫

In the same boat here. I have a 1980 Chrysler 9.9hp Model 92hog that had no holes on the flywheel. Tapped on it slightly while trying to pry it up but no good. Trued an 8 inch wide gear puller but not wide enough. The side of the flywheel is about 1 1/4 inch thick. Any suggestions?

Larger gear puller. I borrowed one from the local auto parts store free loaner tool program.

The flywheel nut turns the flywheel when you crank on it. How did you keep it from turning?

The only thing I could add is to try and lift the puller (if you can) as you are hitting with the hammer so that you aren't pounding the bearings in the power head as much.

Hey Mike, this question doesn't have anything to do with a flywheel. But I do need your help, I have a lot of slop in my shift linkage, she's a 68 20 horsepower Johnson tiller style , I'm trying to remove the power head to adjust the linkage on the top, I'm taking out the four bolts and the two nuts she wiggles, it won't come lose, what am I doing wrong, I'm paul in Indianapolis, I have mechanic skills but not on boat motors ha 5:34

Mike I’m about to remove the flywheel on a 1940 3.3hp Evinrude. It has no holes for a puller… So how do I get this one off?
