I just brewed the same kit for a Christmas gift. I added 500g amber dme and mashed 1.4kg grains. I did save money due to the fact the imports of English beers are expensive here. Thanks for the video. Cheers 😀👍🍻

I agree with ya there, may as well go to supermarket. Its only cheaper and better when u go all grain. Just done my first homebrew for 5 years, Festival suffolk old ale. Swapped the hops though...Nice one Mr Pie👏

I'm thinking of doing a brew in a bag. Haven't done one for years but still have the 30l kettle. Its a grain father sparge water kettle but works for BIAB. DME is getting expensive now though buying in bulk as I did last time works out cheaper but you have to drop a ton to buy it.

Great video. You raise several interesting points. I agree with you in regard to companies providing the IBU. It would be great if that was standard practice among home brew kit producers. The other thing I’d like to see more of is ring pull lids on the tins. Black Rock is the only example I’ve used and I loved it. Interestingly, Coopers seems to divide Australian home brewers. Some use them exclusively while others say that they’re terrible and use Morgan’s or Black Rock instead. By the way, I still watch some of the old Craig Tube videos. His no worries approach is great. In terms of cost, I spend around $60 Australian to brew 23 litres. That includes the kit, fermentables, specialty grain, hops and 2 packets of specialty yeast. That usually gets me 26 x 750 ml bottles. Although it sounds expensive, it’s actually good value as the price of beer is simply outrageous. 12 x 750 ml bottles of Australian macro lager is around $70 and craft beer is far more expensive. So I’m getting more than twice the volume for $10 less. Cheers!

You mention some great points too. Thank you for sharing. I remember Craig once explaining why Canadians homebrew and it was because of the insane prices of beer in Canada. He said that in Canada the government own all the bottle shops and so have a monopoly. Yes I've heard from several Aussie beer reviewers complain about the cost of beer where you are. Especially SwillinGrog lol. He always seems to complain about the cost. Here in the UK you can still buy beer very cheaply. It may not be the premium range but it is drinkable and rather nice like the Ruddles Best.

I will give this beer a go, good beer here in Ireland is now 3 euro a bottle with some german beers at 4 euro a bottle. These are supermarket prices.

Coopers English Bitter works well for me, have brewed it multiple times. I've tried Coopers yeast, Muntons Gold Ale yeast, SafAle S04 and tried adding different sugars, amber malt, dextrose and plain table sugar. Nice clear pleasantly bitter 'standard' beer. I'm not sure paying extra for malt or brew enhancer instead of ordinary sugar is really worth it. I'd suggest S04 yeast and 1kg supermarket table sugar to keep costs down.

Of all the kits I have brewed, the Coopers Bitter is one of the worst. Can you really buy 40 beers for the same price as a kit and extract? That's insane.

You can if you use DME which is getting pretty expensive here in the UK. Delivery is usually between £3 and £6 depending on speed. But for £28 (~Aus$54) you can buy 4 boxes of 10 440ml cans of a drinkable average type pub ale.
