I just read some very disturbing case law. According to a 2015 SCOTUS ruling, police can essentially search and seize based on ignorance of the law. For instance, say they perform an illegal traffic stop. Anything they come across in a person's car as a result of that stop can be used as evidence in an arrest. This is absolutely insane.

Until recently, swearing in public was illegal in my state. @@johnperry5550 You would think that Cohen v California settled the matter, but I suggest you read the Cohen decision and subsequent case law. For example, standing on a corner, yelling profanity laced insults at people passing by, and having people call the police to complain about the behavior, might get you a disorderly conduct charge. Obscenity or cursing in commercial speech also seems to fall in a grey area. I agree this incident is a violation of this man's civil rights, and his sign appears to be political in nature, and this is strongly protected. But at times interpreting case law is difficult and confusing even for people of normal intelligence such as yourself.

@@SailingWindGypsycohen case was decades ago, an the decision was that "words used to incite violence or riot" are the only kind that can be restricted as non-free speech and inciting violence was further defined and cannot simply be insults but must be an actionable call to violence aka fighting words. Nothing about the cohen decision or case in any way can be interpreted that shouting profanity or vulgarity is illegal, and in fact it wasn't even about verbal speech, but about wording on a jacket worn by Cohen. I'm not sure how the cohen decision or cases can be applied here aside from in a manner that proves they violated free speech under color of law.
