When my truck got wreaked they didn't want to cover my aftermarket wheels and tires so I put the original wheels back on it.the insurance company didn't pay for the wheels I did so they were mine.

When my own Aveo got totaled, I left the Maxx-86 I paid $119 for in 2019 in it for the next person; it was listed at Copart as a Run and Drive (because after the accident, I drove it work, drove it back home, and then drove it to the body shop where it was totaled!)

Depends on the insurance company. The whole car is insured not the accessories. I agree with the battery but accessories and aftermarket parts needs to be replaced with stock before surrendering the unit.

I spoke to my insurance company a couple weeks ago and they said even the accessories are covered as long as you have receipts. Only thing that's not is modifications like rims, suspension which can make the whole car not covered unless they are professionally installed.

Depends on the company. For my insurance, its not covered. The unit is valued and estimated as stock. If it got totaled with accessories, thats just gravy for them.

Most insurance companies want you to declare aftermarket parts and accessories and may not cover them if they were not disclosed. So you really need to read and understand your policy and its limits before you choose to remove aftermarket parts and reinstall the OEM's.

Yes 100% agree about the insurance. Nobody wants to pay high insurance prices but we pay them to be insured. If you accept the insurance company's check then you've accepted the payout. If you don't agree with the payout, then arbitrate it or get an atty to help settle the case. Once you cash the check the car belongs to the insurance company and everything in the car stays.

When my fathers car was wrecked 2 years ago we took out the amps and subs in the back and then replaced the aftermarket radio with the stock one. We also went and had the tires swapped out for different ones since the ones on the car were still being payed off at a tire shop. We didn't take anything else as we had no right to anything else except what wasn't going to be covered in insurance.

In my opinion you should be able to take anything off the car along as it keep the car a car. If you have nice wheels you put on then you should be able to take it back as long as you put the factory wheels back onto it.

I agree with you to a point on the battery, speakers, radios. For example I love putting aftermarket radios in my cars and show a serious investment. There is no way in hell I'm leaving my Alpine stereo or Sundown subwoofer in my car if I get in a wreck. Now I'll (haphazardly) through some factory stuff I get from the junkyard in but you have every right to your aftermarket stuff. And no you're right. I paid 5500 for my 92 Corvette and it has a clean title and is in pretty good shape.

As for aftermarket accessories, it depends on IF they are covered by the policy or not. Generally, these days "personal choice" items (insurance terminology!) are not covered unless they are included in the policy. I added several items to my 16 Mustang GT before it was totaled. Insurance would only pay for Ford accessories, not anything else. But I could have removed them if I put a stock part back on if applicable. But a car must have a battery to run, so it needs to have one when it is turned into insurance.

Taking out battery also clears the engine codes. Some codes won't come back until car is driven, so you won't see any codes even if you jump start it. Battery is cheap and quick to replace. It is the radio and speakers that people take out, that I don't like. It takes hours to replace that.

Hey Randy, that Toyota Camry had a basic metal key .. it needs a transponder or chipped key to allow it to start.. that's why it was just cranking .. it would most likely run with a programmed key

Just got my 91 corvette out of the paint shop today had light body damage with a bunch of rock chips, peeling paint, and a cracked rear bumper. For a full paint job and all the body work it cost me 3500 at MAACO. The fiberglass painting and work is way more expensive than most cars because you’re not supposed to use a chemical stripper on the body. These are really cool cars though, you don’t see a whole lot in yellow either

I'd say that's probably not too common. When you think about it, a certain percentage of those auctions would just turn off real buyers and the vehicle wouldn't sell. Fair money is better than no money.

I agree with not taking your parts for the most part, If you have aftermarket rims and return the car back to stock, I don't see a reason why you can't. Same with subwoofers, amps and headunits. If you return it to stock and everything works nothing should be wrong.

If what one removes was an add-on paid for and even installed by the owner, seems like that should be acceptable; however, if, for example the owner removes an after market sound system, he/she should replace it with the original sound system. I've never done that, but I always keep the original equipment unless it does not function. To my knowledge, the insurance company does not reimburse for loss incurred with a vehicle upgrade.

I always thought that if you restored the parts (Shocks, radio, lift kits, etc.) you can take them. Battery, exhaust parts, etc. should be staying with the car unless you have factory parts. Insurance companies usually DO NOT cover aftermarket parts UNLESS you purchase riders.

Unfortunately given the cost of paint and body work, plus the extra expense of the weather seals that’s all the money for that poor C4. Looks like the drivers door panel is damaged and the seats have been reupholstered…keep looking Randy. Check the fuel pump relay or fuse and check the coil wire to the Opti Spark unit. Randy you are 100% correct about what you said re not removing things from cars to “screw” the insurance companies.

As far as the battery, or any other accessory for that matter. The owner, IF anything on their wrecked vehicle is recently purchased/installed, they SHOULD be able to provide a receipt for said item (s) as part of their claim thereby having it covered. Otherwise, Randy's right, once you take a check from an insurance company to dispose of a wrecked vehicle, and unless you've made prior arrangements w/ the adjuster, agent to retrieve personal/accessory items prior to disposition, you at that time forfeit all claim to that vehicle, unfortunately, including attachments, unless one is just Shady!! 🤔 And THAT, is merely my opinion on the matter.
