Also, be careful, a snake can still bite and inject venom when it's dead. Sounds crazy, but it's a reflex for them.

Our friend describes them as "extremely poisonous," but copperheads are actually the least toxic of North America's venomous snakes. They're rarely fatal. (Though which is not to say that you still shouldn't be careful around them.)

@@popscyclep8084 I suppose, but you could say the same thing about a honeybee. If you're allergic, a single sting can kill you, but that doesn't make them "extremely" venomous. Regardless of one's individual susceptibility, it's just a fact that copperhead venom is the least potent of all North American venomous snakes. That said, you still don't want to get bit by one.

Beware that freshly dead snakes can still bite. However, this reminds me of a story. When my grandmother was 62 she got bitten by a copperhead while weed eating the mailbox. I remember she came up to the house and said, "I just got bit by a copperhead." Despite the grandchildren trying to get her to go the hospital, she finished the job after taking some tylenol. She eventually went two days later, and the doctor gave her some heart meds. She survived, but she was one tough lady.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm a city girl who has recently moved and my new home is located next to a wildlife park. I know there are many snakes around here because I've already seen a few. Now at least I know how to identify one that could be dangerous. People around here keep telling me "Oh, you probably saw a little garden snake." At least now I'm a little more educated, although I'll probably still run regardless of what kind of snake it is. Thanks again.

Gypsyskys McC No, not the same thing. Poison is a simple chemical compound, and it works whether it's injected, ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Venom, as a type of saliva, is a complex cocktail of enzymes and other protein-based toxins programmed by DNA to perform very specific functions, and for that reason ONLY works when it's injected into the bloodstream. Some venoms do affect a victim's eyes, but those venoms still only have the power to kill when they actually get into the bloodstream. Basically, if it bites you and makes you sick, it's venomous. If you bite it and it makes you sick, it's poisonous. There is only one genus of poisonous snake in the world, and it's also venomous. It's a rear-fanged colubrid from China. Some of its species are mildly venomous, and some are dangerously venomous. All secrete a mucus from the prey they eat that poisons other predators who may not be affected by their venom.

Apparently copperheads put off a very strong smell of cucumbers. I found one in a local park one day that was about that same size. He had been hit by a lawnmower driven by a park employee. Scared me to think that same park that so many children go to play had such a deadly creature lurking around in it.

there hasn't been a death recorded from a copperhead in the United States since the fuckin sixties, and even back then it was rare. This snake isn't deadly in today's time, although it does have the potential to cause lots of pain for a good amount of time. I don't agree with the fact that he killed it, but if he has kids, I understand why. I wouldn't want my children to go through the effects of a copperhead bite, and I think we all have to respect him for trying to keep his kids safe. I have conflicting emotions about this because I love snakes with a passion. copperheads are generally docile and don't tend to bite without provocation, but it can still happen. And many of you could say he should have moved the snake instead of killing it, but it takes years of training to know how to do that. If he or anyone else had been bitten, sure they wouldn't have died, but that's still a lot of medical bills that otherwise wouldn't have been necessary for him and his family. That's why I have conflicting emotions about this kind of thing.

I don't understand why you had to kill it, but at least you used the skin and ate the thing. I would like to try snake. Wonder if it tastes like gator? I've heard that copperheads are not aggressive, & that although their venom is the most painful, they are the least poisonous of North Americas venomous snakes. Still, you got little kids running around & it is dangerous to try to catch & release a poisonous snake, so maybe I woulda done the same thing, I dunno. I think you should stress that if you dunno if a snake is poisonous are not to treat it like one means to steer clear of it and not kill it. I know a guy who kills every snake he sees around his cabin & them complains that his cabin gets infested by rodents...duh. Anyway, nice vid

Any of you taking sides with the snake have never experienced a snake bite. My wife was bitten by a copperhead 12 years ago. She was walking from her truck to mine and it struck from under the truck, and bit her on top of the foot. Not agressive my rear end! Trip to the ER ,3 days in the hospital,puking for hours. Her foot up to her knee was black purple and swelled to the point I thought it would explode! She was on crutches 2 weeks, medical bills in the thousands. She still has nerve damage where she was bitten. Still feel sorry for the snake? Thank God our 2 year old walking with her wasn't bitten, I don't go looking for snakes to kill, but when they ivade my space and endanger my family, dead snake. Your videos are great,we send prayers for you and yours!

Check it out, back in early 80s stationed at Ft Stewart I drove a jeep for a support plt. The capt I drove for noticed a gator in the water right next to those tank crossing bridges, and a copperhead doing a stand off with in a foot of each other. We watched for maybe 15 minutes and I tossed a small rock that hit the nose of the gator and neither one flinched.. Waited maybe another 5 minutes then had to get, but they were both still standing off there. Don't know WTF the copperhead was thinking it was not more then 4 feet long, the gator head was about 1.5 ft long and maybe 8 inch wide. We were about 10 to 11 ft from them..

You should look up the odds of actually being killed by a copperhead. They're extremely low. I love how people want to live in nature but not with the animals that live out there as well. If you must kill a snake to feel "safer" or whatever then kill it, don't leave it sitting there in pain and agony while you make a video of it.

The only way to "protect" ones family is by knowledge and an understanding that snakes have a right to be on this planet. Any snake will become aggressive when threatened or cornered. Come to Australia, I'll introduce you to some serious elapids like the eastern brown or taipan if you want to see what aggressive looks like. Even then like all snakes their very first reaction is to get away and hide. Almost all snake bites occur from people either stepping on (or next to them) and scaring them, but mostly people are bitten when attempting to catch or kill them.

I believe you can even eat the venom because it harmless if not injected. I'm not certain about that so DO NOT TRY INGESTING VENOM. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED I AM NOT LIABLE IF YOU GET SICK OR DIE. I've lived in rural Texas (west Texas) and if you called animal control for a venomous snake they always would say to trap it and kill it. The entire neighborhood would come out to see the rattler that was just killed. We had a lot of bull snakes though. Those were awesome.

Let's get something straight. It's nice that some of you tough guys love snakes and aren't afraid of them, and if you think they're "beautiful" wonderful creatures, fine. But here's some reality for you - most folks don't like snakes, and they're not cowards, pussies, idiots, or morons. They think snakes are creepy, dangerous, and aggressive predators, so you'll you'll just have to live with how they feel. My feeling is that snakes should be feared and avoided. Personally, I kill them at every opportunity, and if you don't like that - tough shit. So put a lid on this pseudo "macho" horseshit bravado about unfounded fears because snakes are great. It's not gonna get you praise, respect, or homage, and it won't get you laid for being a tough guy.

Bill Bitterass it's not about being tough guy or even not being afraid of snakes. I'm scared shitless of any venomous species I come across. That doesn't mean I have to kill it though. Local wildlife department can take away venomous snakes and help preserve their populations. The notion that herpetology preservation is a tough guy mentality is absurd and just wrong.

Thank you so much for your video. I totally agree w / you, we live w/a swamp along the side of our property so we get a lot of moccasins. My niece did spot a copperhead once but I only 1/2 believe her because she was too casual identifying it. Regardless in the last 5 years I have lost 3 Dachshund's wandering on their property as the moccasins boldly took over their territory. So, the snake goes before another fur-baby does, sorry if I'm stepping on anyone's feelings -but someone has to stick up for their rights. One of my females has been attacked 4 separate times by moccasins, there is no way I' m letting any of her offspring outside. Again thank you. Awesome video.

Overbreeding can kill a dog slowly. Educate yourself on where these snakes like to hide. Keep you property clear of debris and keep your grass cut short. Spay and neuter your pets, stop breeding for cash in your pocket. Just because someone pays for a pet doesn’t mean they won’t end up homeless. Adopt don’t shop. Stop having an excuse to kill animals.
@christiangasior4244
@christiangasior4244 2 жыл бұрын
The moccasins didn’t boldly take over the dogs territory. If you live next to a swamp and you’re down south, there will be plenty of cottonmouths there no matter how many you kill. That is their prime habitat. They don’t just live right next to the water. They go inland a bit but they do always live near a water source and a swamp is literally their number one territory. I can’t believe you lost 3 dogs to them. After the first time I would either keep the dogs inside, or I’d create a fenced in area that keeps the snakes out. There is just no way you can let dogs roam free around a swamp in the south and not expect them to come in contact with each other. And it’s gonna be the dogs that come up to the snakes curiously every time and mess around until they get bit. So yeah the issue here is knowing your environment and responding to tragic situations appropriately.

No it isn’t at all. You have to step on them or scare them bad to get tagged. Like if you flash your hand in front of them quickly yeah they may bite. You’re a huge potential predator looking down on them and they fear for their life. They’re not aggressive. They don’t want to waste venom because it’s very valuable to them and they need it for their prey and to help digestion. They only produce a limited amount of it. Often when they bite it’s just a warning, aka a dry bite, but if they do envenomate you it means you scared the crap out of them and they feared for their life.

Why do some people mistake nonpoisonous brown snakes for copperheads? I can tell Copperheads have a pattern of light brown & dark brown & their tail is yellow, but a nonpoisonous brown snake is just brown with black spots but they don't have a yellow tail like a copperhead does!!!

The snake doesn't even have to be poisonous to kill you. My friend was working around tall grass and thought she was stung by fire ants. The next day she was in emergency surgery to clean out the infection. She was actually bit twice by a pigmy rattler which is not venomous or poisonous but carries tons of bacteria on their fangs. She never saw the snake. In a grid down situation, my friend would have been dead.
