Amazing video, thank you very much for it! I plan to try your basic pattern block tutorial as soon as I get my hands on some sturdy big paper, and this one probably in time as well! I just wonder, how do you decide straight grain line angle? Perpendicular to the waist line?
@coralinestreet9 ай бұрын
You could try gluing some sheets of printer paper as well, to make a bigger sheet! That's how I used to do it in the beginning. The grainline depends! In this case, I made it parallel to the center seam of the dress. It happens to also be perpendicular to the waist line this time, but that's not always the case! If it's confusing to you, please ignore the following part. But for a better fit, sometimes we can't have the waist line being a straight line. Because of the design of this dress, and the diamond darts we have at the front and the back, it's okay for the waist line to be straight! But for some skirts, it's better to make it a bit lower at the front center seam of the skirt, and a bit higher at the back center seam (to accommodate the curves of the body better). So it's better to think of it as perpendicular to the floor, rather than perpendicular to the waist line! And when we're making half patterns, the center seam is usually perpendicular to the floor. So that's the line I usually use to base my grainline! But it's not a rule for all garments.

Que tutorial excelente! Sei que tem a parte do busto e tudo mais mas você acha que daria certo de fazer pra usar dos dois lados? Em um momento com decote e em outro momento sem o decote.
@coralinestreet9 ай бұрын

This is just gorgeous! I'm thinking about making my formal wedding dress in this princess style, only I want a completely straight but low neckline and then straps. Could i simply cut the pattern underneath the arms and add straps? ❤
@coralinestreet9 ай бұрын
If the neckline is straight and low, I think you would have a better fit if the front princess cut ended at the shoulders instead! You can watch this video here where I made it like this, maybe it will be more helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jX-0mHSXd81pe6Msi=Il9KxRXD-o7zntuv The princess cut can be done following the already existing shoulder dart, but since it's a tight bodice, you'll probably need to enter a little bit on each side of the shoulder dart. Make a toile and test the fit before going for the more expensive fabric!

Hey Caroline!!! Thank you for sharing this amazing piece ❤ I'm thinking of making this dress with a square neck and I was thinking if I could make this dress out of a stretchy fabric I have so that I don't have to put on a zipper, what would you think about that?
@Gandellion9 ай бұрын
Hi Caroline, this dress is so pretty! Do you have a video anywhere showing how to draft an a-line dress with a side slit? I’d really like to make something like this but I don’t want to do it wrong and waste my fabric!
@coralinestreet9 ай бұрын
I made it in this video right here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKrVZWZ8bdiolassi=7xgLYfeLKoi6-xY6 But for the slit, you can follow the patternmaking process the same way I made this pattern. Since there are separate pattern pieces for the Center Front and Side Front, all you have to do is mark on the pattern how high you want your slit to hit, and when sewing the front panels together, you only sew up until that part. The rest you just have to hem. Watch the video so you can understand a bit better! But it's basically the same pattern as this one. The only thing that changes is the sewing part.

If I wanted to make a dress with the same neckline and A-line shape but midi length, how would you go about it? Thank you!
@coralinestreet8 ай бұрын
When I'm drafting the skirt panel, I tell you to measure how long you want your skirt to be. Just make the center line longer, as much as you'd like. And I used 5cm/2 inches as a measurement to flare the skirt to the sides, but I recommend using more than that at the bottom if it's a long skirt. Maybe 15 cm? It will depend on how flared you want it!

Your final pattern pieces do not appear to have seam allowance added to the side seams, is this correct?
@coralinestreet9 ай бұрын
Yes, you are correct! The reason for that is because in my Basic Bodice Block tutorial I already included 1 cm seam allowance at the sides when drafting the pattern. So the sides already had seam allowance! And for the skirt I also added 1cm seam allowance at the hips when drafting (the waist measurement used was the same one as the bodice, with seam allowance included!) I reckon it could be a bit confusing, so I'm sorry for that! I should have mentioned it in the video!

can i make the pattern without the princess seams? I just want to use the darts but i don't know if it works
@coralinestreet9 ай бұрын
You would need to sew the darts close, and only draw the neckline on the pattern once the sholder dart is closed. I personally think it looks more smooth with the method I made, separating the front and back into 2 parts. Sometimes the darts can look a bit pointy. And if you're lining, it might be too volumnous. But it's up to you! You can try it out and tell me if it worked out.
@MadiJunkie8 ай бұрын
I want to make this dress longer because I don't like short dresses (about knee lenght). Do you have any recommendations for that so that it doesn't look awkward?
@coralinestreet7 ай бұрын
If you're making it knee length, maybe it would be better to make it more flared at the hem, because if it's too form fitting you might have trouble walking. But if you'd like to make it tighter, I would recommend making a slit at the center back seam, so you don't get your movements restricted

Is the 15cm for the darts same for everyone?
@maddymorris47727 ай бұрын
In the book I'm reading, darts should end atleast 3/4 inch before the fullest measurement. So you may want to draw your hip measurement in before you do the lower waist dart. Your waist and hip line might be closer or further apart so it's worth a bit of trial and error
