I abuse track saws every day as a kitchen installer, constantly cutting panels of various thicknesses and materials. Composite, chipboard, MDF, aluminum faced laminate, really anything goes. Had many track saw, only one that lasted for more than a year is DeWalt. It's been dropped and got wet many times. As long as you keep changing blades and occasionally tightening track guides, the thing just cuts perfect and true all day long. I go through three 6ah batteries a day - that's a lot of cuts, no other battery saw so far can keep up with this workload every day.

I’ve only used the Festool and the DeWalt. For me the Festool wins hands down. But I think in the UK the DeWalt is a lot cheaper. Especially if you already have the DeWalt batteries. The DeWalt range is second to none so I have no issue with that preference.

The Dewalt, in my opinion is the Dewalt truly needs to be updated but Dewalt isn’t going to take the time or spend the money to do so. I own a construction company. All of our trim crews run either Festool or Makita. This isn’t because they dislike Dewalt. 100% of them run Dewalt table saws, Dewalt 780 miter saws, and the majority run Dewalt cordless power tools or Milwaukee cordless power tools. I have used the Makita for several years but sold it last week. I’m trying to decide on the replacement and am watching reviews.

Really enjoyed your review and comparrison. I'm American living in Asia so have access to most brands if I can afford the shipping. I got tired of waiting for Milwaukee so I bought the Makita 40v about a month ago, I really think it's the same saw just reconfigured for 40v rather than 2-18v. Once I replaced the blade I loved the saw, I HATE thin kerf blades on anything because of there flexing. I cut a lot of melamine and I use the scoring feature on the Makita and pull the saw backwards for the first cut then foreward for the complete cut and get chip free cuts on the top even when blade is kinda dull. You made No mention of this feature, and was wandering what other saws have this feature besides Festool. It is a great feature especially if you cut melamine which is a hard material to cut,, chip free. I prefer ATB over TC blades for most all cutting, they do dull faster but make a much better cut ( even with less teeth) in my opinion. I have bought Makita tracks that when attempting to join them it's impossible to get a perfect match just because the extrusion is slightly different so they must have shims put under the joiners in order to line up. If you place all three of the tracks on a flat surface and bring them together at the ends so they touch all 6 ends are made slightly different and using a micrometer all measure different thicknesses by as much as .0013 which is enough to cause problems when sawing if they are joined together. So Makita needs to fix this problem .

Great comparison boys, after extensive research I really wanted the Mafell but like you said no availability in AUS, from what I've seen they are on another level above the Festool. In the end purchased the new Festool with the anti kickback in the kit, wow what a tool excellent in every way I don't think you can ever be disappointed with a Festool product.

Great review, I'm on the dewalt 18v platform looking at upgrading to a few flexvolt tools and was going to go dewalt, but also been left handed as well I've crossed that off my list. Hikoki are releasing the 36v witch looks identical to the Metabo but a higher voltage. So I think that's the one. Plus they do the battery 1/2 router. Amazing video and thanks for helping me decide.

Thanks for the good review. Just a note on cut quality - Festool has a scribe depth setting for 1st cuts in materials like melamine and how can makita get a decent score in cut quality when the thin kerf blade runs off in one of your tests. The Makita blade struggles to not wonder off when cutting any hardwood thicker than 20mm, defeats the purpose of using a straight rail.

Loved the reviews boys. Have used festool a fair bit, makita as well, but own dewalt saw. Have multiple platforms I run, including Milwaukee ( bit of a tool fiend really), so that wasn’t the deciding factor for me. There were 2 reasons What was the first, and which I didn’t notice in your review, is the fact that the dewalt can be laid down on its guard so the saw can cut horizontally ( see the two black glides) and used to cut down doors that are already hung. (Yes you can actually use a track saw without a track😂😂😂😂) And secondly, the blade is one of the closest to the edge of the guard out of all the saws. Allows cuts approximately 10-13 mm away from a wall if used hand held. Did I mention the double sided track 🤔 Keep up the great work fellas 👍

I've been waiting on Milwaukee to release a track saw for years now. We got teased with some rumors earlier this year, but nope. I won't wait much longer. I want a blade left track saw, dammit! WTF aren't there any of those. Kreg makes a corded version, but I don't want a corded saw and wouldn't get into another battery platform if Kreg had a proprietary battery anyway. I've almost sprung for the Makita several times and may just cave and get it. One of the features I really like is the Festool model that stays attached to the track for precise portable fast cutting. I believe if Milwaukee came out with a left bladed, track retained saw, they'd instantly get a huge share of the track saw market. But what do I know? Haha! Keep up the great work gents!

Excellent review guys but a couple of key things I think you missed. The metabo has a larger cut capacity than the rest at 66mm. Also the track system employed by bosch and the identical mafell and also by the looks of it the metabo is not only much quicker to join but also totally 100% accurate as its self aligning. When joining the makita/festool rails you need to do so with a straight edge held against both rails whilst tightening the grub screws to guarantee straight accuracy. For the record I own and use a makita 36v on festool rails and a mafell 240v which I love both for different reason. The mafell is the best on the market and mafell/bosch rail system is far superior

hi Matt. thanks for the feedback. The Metabo's cut capacity is the largest, but is 61mm on the track (66mm off track). That is covered in the spec sheet we provided but we can't talk about everything, and I don't personally think that is a big deal. The joiner of the Metabo and Bosch is cool. we have a separate post on Instagram all about tracks which may(?) talk about this, can't remember. Cheers

The TSO joiners are great for the makita / festool tracks. Self-aligning, accurate & easy. No straight edge. Easier than trying to handle a 3m track. The festool guide rail square in Australia is the TSO square rebadged but the joiners are not and seem to have problems. I don't get why makita didn't put a separate measurement on the plunge depth to allow for the thickness of the track, like festool. They're all pretty nice, though.

Being you have done a lot of work to get this review to you tube it may have snuck under your noses without you knowing. Ive got the dewalt and you guys are right about the blade, i put Diablo in my saw and it made it way better. It makes basically factory grade cuts now and slices through just about anything with ease. I love the plunge mechanism actually. With my 9ah batteries runtime is unreal. Its definitely very powerful. In regards to lack of 45 degree stop, I always use my square to set the saw to 45. Just dont trust stops when you only have one shot at making a cut. Overall dewalt is definitely not the best track saw buts its right up there in terms of accuracy. If you’re already on the platform i wouldnt get another brand tbh, not enough of a jump to make it worthwhile unless its Mafell.

Excellent review. I went through a journey of track saws last year. Started off purchasing the corded Makita but returned it due to a bowed track. I also wasn't a fan of the lack of a riving knife and the extremely short cord. I then went to the new Kreg corded saw which was OK however the saw doesn't bevel correctly so it will put a 45 degree cut in your splinter guard which makes it useless for 90 degree cuts. I finally went with the Festool TS 55 K that you reviewed and I agree it's a dream to use. I love the bluetooth integration with my CT MIDI-I. I believe you can also hack together a switched outlet using the legacy CT bluetooth module. I only found two negatives. First, I wish it still had a riving knife although it's not a huge deal because of the kickback protection. Second, I had to add a whole new battery platform. I'd like to think I would go with Makita cordless everything if I had to do it all over again however only the new 40v Makita has kickback protection and their platform is missing a lineup of decent nailers as well as some specialty tools like a pex expander. I suppose the days of being on a single platform are gone. Even within a brand you'll have different voltages....

Passed Total tools today and called in for a look at the Bosch. Spoke with the Bosch salesman who happened to be in store and praised the Bosch (as he should)...Untill it came to the blade...The only replacement blade in store that fitted this saw was a bosch @ $149

The price here in the USA is much more reasonable at a high of $70 USD before 20%-25% Bosch accessory discounts which are fairly frequent. Sometimes the go much cheaper on Amazon: I got a couple for $30 USD for the 48-tooth blade, and $20 USD for the 24-tooth blade. Only those two blades are available right now here, not any of the specialty blades.

Owned my ts55 for 8 years. Been back to the shop once. Of the cordless is similar I'd give it a 5 for useabiity too. However always found it gutless and moved to 110v DeWalt for heavier work. Prefer the plunge on it tbh. But concur I hate the depth adjustment. The bevel wouldn't irritate me as much but it does itself up when trying to adjust. Just grabbed a flexvolt after my fes finally died. My old 18v DeWalt got me out of a hole with lion adapter's this week.

What’s the run time like on the festool running 1/2 batteries, I’m really debating getting one and I’m heading towards the cordless route rather than corded, but I’m trying to work out if just 2 batteries would be suitable for me depending on how long they last in the saw. I won’t use it continuously but it’s like maximum of 10 cuts at a time on decorative multi panel board (1.2x2.5) thanks!

Guys you over looked a feature in the Dewalt that all of the other saws do not offer.. it’s the only saw out if the saws you reviewed that had the ability to under cut skirting boards.. you flip it on it’s side hence the parallel protectors in the blade guard.. i think its a 12mm under cut.. the saw you reviewed also has tool Connect so it’s ready to roll with Dewalt dust extraction 🍻

I'm currently deciding between the 36v makita, 54v dewalt and the corded festool. would replacing the blade on the dewalt fix the results from your first cutting test with all the tear out? and which would you guys go for?

Hey Lachlan, although I am not one of the Oz Tool Talk Team, here’s my two cents: I have worked a lot with the Festool corded and worked with the DeWalt corded. Besides that, I have seen most of the track saw reviews and tests available on YT. The festool is a blast, no question. The Dewalt is great, too, especially with a different blade. Check ten square metre workshop‘s channel here to get more insight into this saw. The makita has got a lot of good reviews so far, but the blade deflection was mentioned several times. In my opinion, with the festool you get: 👍 absolutely great precision, super clean cuts 👍 good power 👍 one of the best UXs on the market 🤨 a premium price line (for a premium tool, to be fair…) With the Dewalt you get a mix of really good engineering with really bad design decisions, based on: 👍 great power 👍 a great UX on the plunge mechanism (once you get used to the plunge mechanism, you gonna love it. Your wrist will not have to move with the saw but stay in the same position through the whole cut. And to be fair, you won’t be using 5 different track saws all day long, so that comparison doesn’t count here in my eyes) 👍 a top performance battery platform with an enormous variety of tools 🤨 as mentioned, a really strange UX with the bevel settings - who doesn’t add stops at 45 degrees and doesn’t include a minus 1 bevel these days? 🤨 an unusable saw for left handed people (the corded one doesn’t have that problem though since there is no battery to crush your knuckles) 🤦‍♀️ an absolute fail at 45 degrees: when you tilt the saw to 45 degrees, the cut line will no longer align with the 90 degree cut line on the track but will be some mm off. My personal biggest wtf moment with this saw. Again, this does not apply to the corded version which stays in line no matter if 90 degree or any other bevel. I have the DeWalt platform on all my 18/54V tools, but I won’t buy the cordless track saw. If the offset cut line, the missing 45 degree stop and the not really good dust collection were not a deal breaker, the impossibility of use for lefties like me is it. After all my research, the winner is the Metabo. Precision is great, power is great, UX is great, it’s on the CAS, uses one battery only (can be super annoying charging two batteries with only one charger…), the price is great. To me personally, there is no reason to get a festool or a mafell. I might have the money, but I don’t use a track saw every workday for 8 hours a day. If that was the case, I’d get a mafell. My most important points are: • accuracy • power • ease of use • one battery instead of two • price As mentioned, they all might have their pros and cons, but for me, the metabo is the best overall deal. Only thing is I don’t want to over invest in the cordless festool hence the corded option vs the 54v dewalt. I wouldn’t be using it every day but when I do want to use it, it could be outside on jobs, could be in the workshop cutting timber down for furniture which I’d prefer cleaner and more accurate cuts so I think the festool is the way I’m going to have to go, even could see if I could pick up a cheap dewalt to try out first and then maybe getting the festool later on sale Thank you again! I think this is what KZbin should be for - sharing knowledge and helping each other out 🙂 Yes, getting a used Dewalt Saw to test (and verify / falsify the offset!) might be a good option. Your requirements sound basically like the ones that I have - not in daily use, very accurate cuts are needed sometimes, but not on a daily basis. I can only repeat myself: check out the Metabo (Model KT 18 LTX 66 BL) if you haven’t already. I watched a lot of reviews of many different plunge saws currently on the market, and this one seems like the best overall deal to me. I currently could even afford a mafell, but honestly, why should I buy it? If I am honest with myself, I’d never fully use it to the extent it is actually capable of. I think about the same goes for the Festool. It’s a beautiful saw made for everyday professional woodworkers; so if you’re trying to find a good excuse to satisfy your fetish and get it, I’d be totally with you 😇 I’ll buy the metabo once my job is finished and payed and hope I get what I am expecting. Curious which one you will get. Maybe let us all know in a review video!

I had the dewalt and it was my first track saw. Power it’s awesome but for me that’s a full stop. Horrible cheap knobs and awkward to adjust. And the blade change is a complete disaster. Didn’t find the track that bad but the splinter guard is junk. Sold and bought the cordless festool and although not perfect is miles ahead of dewalt. The Bosch looks a good saw.

@@OZToolTalk we make and install period timber windows and doors. They are regularly 46-48mm thick to match existing detail and accommodate double glazing. Bottom rails are cut on a bevel (usually 7-10°), so effective cut depth is reduced, plus we cut on a track. The Festool TS 55 does the job though

If you're testing units for "power" why not try cutting something like aluminum? Wood is so soft it really isn't much of a torque test. Good video though!

Cutting through 40mm of hardwood is PLENTY hard enough, and much tougher than cutting through aluminium sheet. Having said that, I'd always advise cutting through alu slowly...

To those screaming ‘MAFELL’ at the top your lungs. Yeah, that’s what I swing. Also ran: I’m 40 minutes away from the distributor. Meanwhile, in Oz, Mafell has been a shit show for as long as I can remember. This week you can get them from Rothoblaas. Sweet, maybe soon I’ll order decking material from Makita. 😂. Mafell doesn’t happen in Australia. It’s all over New Zealand all of a sudden, so, who knows, maybe things will change?

Have the dewalt and once you change the blade it leaves a great cut.Have used a mates Festool and found it under powered.Nice features but not worth the extra cost.
