Corn Chowder - Creamy Corn Soup - 100 Year Old Recipe - The Hillbilly Kitchen
In this video I'll be making some good ol' fashioned Corn Soup. This is my granny's recipe from way back. It is a basic recipe there are tons of variations, so fix it up to suit your taste. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Incase you are like me and you don’t know soups made with a milk/cream base are chowder.
Proverbs 27:17 - Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend
Remember, to put God first! :)
Ingredients:
Corn - 12 ounces frozen, 5 or 6 ears fresh, or 1 can whole kernel & 1 can cream style
2 cups diced potatoes
1 diced onion
2 tablespoons of real butter
1 cup water
2 cups milk (plant based milk can be used)
salt & pepper to taste
options:
1 cup chicken broth
1 grated carrot
1 diced stalk celery
1 diced bell pepper
1 or 2 diced tomatoes
Sour Cream
Bacon
Cheese

I love hearing your words. I'm 69 and it's hard to find a companion who believes in God and is a good person. Someone who is in drinking all the time or abusive or lazy or has no desire to do anything and definitely doesn't have money and wants the little you have or they think you want theirs. It's crazy out there for sure. I love watching you cook but I love your sharing your God our God with us all. Happy New Year. 🙏💗

When my oldest son (now 26) was in middle school, parents were asked to volunteer to make Colonial dishes to bring in for the class to taste as part of their History class. I made corn chowder and put it in a Crock Pot. I figured a bunch of middle school kids probably wouldn’t touch it. But surprise, the Crock Pot came home EMPTY! This recipe is almost the same as the one I used.

It's been many years since I left the Appalachia where I was raised. Received an Ivy League education and became a tenured professor at an elite institution. Along the way I never heard spoken the dialect of my native region, and I rinsed my own speech of it as I rose in my profession. God, how I love hearing you speak it. It sounds like home and family and belonging. I miss it so much.

Took about 35 minutes to get all the ingredients chopped/sautéed, seasoned and simmering. Thawed a loaf of good sourdough bread. The house smells so nice. This is gonna be a nice surprise and make hub very happy. Thank you Becky. You’re a lifesaver! Blessings, Marilyn…

Dear Sister Becky, I do the same with any excess vegetable broths: they go into containers for the Freezer! Soup base is a real help as you know: For very little I end up with several meals! When thinking about good stewardship, I believe anything we can do to stretch food and be inventive in cooking is another way of glorifying our wonderful Lord! I love it, when I look at something and a "thought occurs!" God bless you, Sister Becky! PS: I have been cooking since age 9, and I didn't know Chowder is a soup made with milk or cream. In my beloved German language, we just say Kremsuppe!

Becky, I have to say thank you for not only giving us some great recipes, but also Scripture verses. I believe you shared several weeks ago Jeremiah 17:7-8. Every year I try to seek out and contemplate a word for the year to focus on. I daily look for the word TRUST in Scripture and try to read the context of what God's Word is telling me about TRUST. Something that will bring me closer to the Lord and help me be a better Christian. This year I chose TRUST. I had already shared Proverbs 3:5-6 with friends. Today I was driving doing errands and I found the index card with the Jeremiah 17:7-8 in my car. I like to take a verse with me wherever I go so when there is a lull in my errands I can read and memorize that verse. I looked down in the console area of the car and saw the index card sticking out. The first part of verse 7 says "Blessed is the man who TRUSTS in the Lord..." I smiled when I saw that word TRUST. I smiled and laughed a little bit. The Lord is so good. And I also thanked the Lord for you, Becky, for your discipleship in sharing your faith and encouraging me, and I'm sure others. Blessings to you.

Thank you for this recipe. We were hit by the snow storm a few days ago and it’s so bitterly cold. So I thought this sounded good for supper. I added celery, doubled the carrots and only one cup of potatoes. Then I made your cornbread recipe and added half a cup of onions, quarter cup of jarred jalapeño’s chopped and a little over half cup of xtra sharp cheddar cheese. I dipped the cornbread into the chowder. Oh my goodness. It was to die for. Thanks again.

It's made exactly the same as your recipe but of course they puree it so it's creamy and smooth. Absolutely yummy! The only thing we do differently is at the end of cooking we put in a little flour/water slurry (1 TB flour/2 TB water) and thicken the chowder. Thank you for sharing this and God bless you! I love your banter, I’ve recommended your videos and shared them with my friends and family because I love how you explain “history of” and such and I especially love the brief bible lessons that go with you lessons. It reminds me of being in my abuelitas kitchen, only difference is she also sang…no you don’t have to sing…😊😊

I’ve been a widow since last Christmas. I appreciate your channel because you cook good ole down home food, but the best part of your channel is that you dedicate it to also spreading the gospel of our precious SAVIOUR. I’m praying for you. It’s been a hard year for me also. My husband was an ordained minister and he was in Gospel Music for 50 years. My prayer for you is that Jesus would give you sweet peace and wrap you in His loving arms. May God richly Bless you! It’s also good listening to someone from Tennessee. I live about 35 miles east of Nashville. 🙂

I find your channel a blessing. Because of my health I’m not able to cook anymore. And it breaks my heart because I had such joy cooking old to new to my recipes. May this new year bring you many blessings 🙏🏼☝️✝️🛡️🗡️🕊️

Happy New Year from Ca Miss Becky… I learned something new today myself & im 64. I had no idea that “chowder” was the same as “cream of…” and I’m born & raised California. I love Proverbs and this particular verse -you talk about your life partner. Mine has shaped me in such a good way. God truly blessed me. Thank you for your recipes-i have your cookbook and I love your Bible teachings. Xxoo

Thank you for inspiring me. I love corn soup. You make it just like my momma did. I'm 70 years old and this is how she taught me. Makes me homesick.❤ I'm going to take my corn I froze this last year and make a pot.

Thank you. Discharged from hospital yesterday. Everything will be alright. Needed something for dinner. Fixing your creamy corn soup for dinner. Will have enough for a couple days and to share with my neighbor. Your bible readings and witness feeds the soul.

Hi, The black pinwheel took is for breaking up meat in your pan like for taco meat! My friend shared this with me and I love using it! It does work well for chopping up veggies as they are cooking! Thank you for sharing The Lord with His children! 💜

I watched this video over the weekend.....and knew I had to make it. My favorite can soup is Progresso Chicken Corn Chowder so this intrigued me. 🤔.....I think I'll add Chicken. I made it today and I and my husband loved it!! I used 4 ears of corn we put up last year from a local farm, carrots, celery, onion, potatoes, s&p, 2% milk.........and 5 baked chicken tenders seasoned with Garlic & Herb, cut into bite size pieces. A wonderful meal in cold Ohio. I enjoy your channel so much and love to cook and share new recipes. Thank you, too, for sharing traditions, old recipes, and love and wisdom from God's word.

Hi, Becky-one of my favorites is chicken corn chowder. So, I DO add chicken stock. I buy rotisserie chicken from my local market on a second day markdown & my hubby & I get a couple of meals out of that chicken. Then I pick what’s left of that bird & use those leftovers in things like the chicken corn chowder. LOVED the devotional & scripture that you shared! Blessings!

Friends with my hubby for 2-1/2 years first, then got engaged. We really wanted to get to know who the other was before making any kind of commitment. We have been married now for 8 years, and we both walk in the Lord! :) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
