CORN STARCH Resin BLOOMS?! - This is CRAZY! A Video by Daniel Cooper
Here is a Resin Art video as requested, we experiment with Corn Starch instead of baby powder! You can see I stopped the experiment after my 1st attempt with the baby powder as I was too excited to try the corn starch instead! If you still want me to carry on testing with the baby powder, let me know, I will make it happen! I felt it was important to keep that 1st experiment in the vid. I am also currently running another experiment which so far, is showing even better results using a few drops of sinker white alcohol ink instead of the white dye, I will be bring that vid soon also! 😊
Please do NOT experiment with products which may be dangerous if mixed with resin!

I'm glad you kept it in! What about adding a white eyeshadow as a colorant? It's a powder but should have some titanium dioxide already in it which should help the opacity. I know here in the States we can find cheap make up at our Dollar stores, so maybe check your Pound shops. Also what about regular baking flour?

I like how lacy they are. I think chalk and plaster of Paris powder would add opacity Both are stupid cheap and readily available. Chalk comes in colors so you have an option there. Cornstarch for me almost always goes clear if it is in small amounts.

Daniel, corn starch changes with temperature. As the resin heats up, it starts to cook the corn starch and the corn starch becomes translucent. You may try experimenting with mixing the corn starch and resin in container that is wider and shallower in an effort to keep the resin temp to a minimum. Adding mica powder to the corn starch prior to mixing it in the resin may be a way to color it evenly. I dunno, I'm just guessing. I want to try resin with kaolin powder but I'm not sure just how fine it is.

I still think they are cool results - perhaps adding another layer of resin in the back coloured opaque white. Just found your channel! Potato starch might be a good option. It's pretty similar to corn starch, but at least in water it reacts slightly differently. And it's a bit more opaque. Another option might be to try a darker dye than white. Maybe a yellow or orange with that color palate. (A lighter one than used in the center, but one that would grab the starch better.)

Yay, you're going to try cornstarch! Right, cornstarch is called corn flour in the UK...I think??? If you want to use less powder of any kind, maybe use 1 drop of white resin dye or even alcohol ink? The white alcohol ink (not sinker!) Should help the white cornstarch spread rather than sink? LOL! N'mind! You're using the white dye. 😁 WOWWW, it worked! Not bad at all. The petals look great! Maybe try either 2 drops of the white dye, or...wait! Didn't you use typewriter correction fluid once? Wonder if that would work? White acrylic ink? Would Confectioner's sugar (powdered sugar in the States) be a more opaque base?

Cool effect with the corn starch. So long as you’re trying random fine white powders, how about marble dust? AKA calcium carbonate, powdered chalk. Or maybe just some titanium dioxide: isn’t that what’s in the sinker whites?

Loving your videos. New to resin art. Could you tell me the difference between alcohol inks and pigment dyes? I have mica powers and alcohol inks on hand, uv and epoxy resins

I'm not sure how well it works in epoxy resin, but chalk pastels make uv resin pretty opaque with just a tiny bit added, so that might be a good option. Just scratch off a bit of white chalk pastel, instead of using the let's resin dye, and see if that works? Just an idea.

@Shari_A._ I think it would work, too. Steve did that (I think it was Steve?). Jyst a few tiny scrapes, and he got VERY opaque resin.

Have you tried shifting your power or corn starch? It will make finer powder and get rid of lumps. It works in baking. Good luck!

Have you ever tried Titanium Dioxide? I use it to make white pigment paste, it's cheap and a little goes a long way. It's a icing & chocolate whitener. 😊

!!! Those are pretty damn cool actually but it's not going to matter how much cornstarch to use in your resin it's still going to come out more translucent you'll find that out because I'm at gravy all the time so you mix the cornstarch with water first or a broth and it's translucentTried out with water first You'll see what I mean Good luck these are pretty cool

I'd be curious to see it without the corn starch and just the one drop of white, but less resin so it would be a little more condensed. Or is that already in another video? Essentially pigment paste is just part A resin mixed with color. I love the experimenting, though!! Don't stop :)
