Years ago, I tried carving with a Dremel. The darned bit flew off on Bass wood. I thought maybe I didn't tighten it enough. So I tried again. The second time the bit splintered and flew off. I didn't apply very much pressure either time. I had someone check it to make sure it was on tightly enough so it wasn't me. Maybe these days they make them better. But that experience turned me off to Dremel tools. Even so, your video was awesome and you explained everything pretty clearly. Thank you.

Very recently I retired. I am going crazy with so much time on my hand. I have always loved working with my hands. For the last couple of Christmas's my wife had bought me all kinds of Dremel tool stuff. Maybe a hint that I'm driving her crazy always being in the house, hehe. Anyway, I really want to learn how to work with wood on a small scale for a fun hobby and maybe down the line for a little extra cash. Thanks for your videos. I'm watching them all.

Few days ago (before I saw this video) I found an old cabinet door, weathered with chamfered edges. I also have an old Floral Stencil book. So I had the idea to use those with my Dremel, to turn that cabinet door into something pretty that I might sell as rustic home decor. This video was a wonderful affirmation to those suspicions. I will proceed as planned.

Nicely done tutorial. I was not aware that Dremel made the stylo. I have acquired 5 dremels over the years. Today I received my Ryobi battery powered rotary tool. It's very similar to the Dremel and I really like having the motor in the hand piece rather than a drive cable from the hand piece to the tool. Ryobi does have both types. It's really great that so many innovations have been made for rotary tools over the years. I've become partial to the ryobi battery system and the convenience of battery tools. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise with others.

Basswood (like guitar), here I thought that it was Basswood (like the fish)! Ha ha ha! Thanks for the tutorial. Love the vacuum! One thumbs down for the video is that lack of hearing protection. You protect every BUT your hearing. It's a personal pet peeve of mine as I have tinnitus. I would have to say, a Dremel tool, if you're considering just One, is far more versatile, especially when you need to run your tool a slower RPMs and has a lot of bits that can be used with it including sanding wheels. One "stencil" method to use print off your design (in reverse the way you want it) then trace it onto your carving material using carbon paper. I got my carbon paper at Office Depot for like $5 & use it lots. Good information for us tho!

I'm an instrument maker. I build violins, guitars, harps, and steel guitars. I bought the Stylo 2 days ago. I have several other bigger Dremels, but the are just too big and clunky. Even the flexible shaft one is a pain in the butt to carve with. The Stylo is perfect for wood carving. I highly recommend! I also recommend buy many bit sets. One can get bit sets from Wally or Harbor Freight for dirt cheap. Not counting drum sanders, disc, polishing wheels, ect... I have at least 500 different metal bits. Variety is best, one can never have too many metal bits. Each one has its own special cut. Great places to get wood is on the side of the road or at a beach. Why pay when you can get for free. But if you must, Hobby Lobby, Joannes, and Michaels have all sorts of good wood blocks. Now when it comes to carving, I NEVER carve recessed objects, like in this video. I only carve so the object is raised above so that it has the 3D look. Its just as easy to do, but takes more time, but looks so much better. With me being an instrument maker I also have about 10 sets of chisels from very small (1/8") to large ones about 1". I do all instrument making with absolutely NO power tools. So using a power tool like the Stylo is going to be a new experience for me. Too me, old 2 x 4's are the best practice material. Its cheap if you buy, but free sitting in someones trash pile. Its also soft using pine wood, so easy to cut. With it so easy to cut, any slips can cut out big chunks. This will teach you self control of the tool very fast. Once you master carving it, then go to the more expensive wood like oak, maple, or the best... mahogany. Anyone who has good hand control can carve, it just takes practice. Start out very simple in a design. In no time, you will be a master at carving... Go slow, go careful, control the Stylo like a pencil... Great video, thumbs up!!!

This is my first lap steel guitar but only roughly cut. The final has leaf and vine patterns and done in red. I use red food coloring for the stain, its so translucent that all the woodgrain shows. I ONLY use food coloring and all violins are done in it. The commercial stains just hide too much! I will post a picture of them, or better yet a video!

I picked up one of these. The first thing I used it for was cutting down some #18 exacto blades to 3/32 for a project I have going. Even with the thinnest cutting wheel I could find it stalled constantly. Compared to a Dotco it's a POS. But you get what you pay for. I actually like the Model 1100 Stylo cordless one from about 15 years ago more. I've had and used Dremels since the 70s. Ones that were actually made in Racine. It seems I've got a habit of picking out power tools that get discontinued. A Ryobi BT-3000 and their Variable speed drill drill press from the same time period.

a good tip for practice wood. Wal Mart has some pretty darn cheap crafting wood in their crafting isle (mine does anyway) that you can buy for under $2 a piece. I'm usng these as a practice surface for my work.
