Corrie Comic highlights of May 1993: 3:00:10 - The pompous wilting Wiltons and their back garden escapades. In the summer of 1991, it was the boat debacle, and in 1993, it's the drama of the dormobile! Both courtesy of Des Barnes. Also, 3:01:14 the expression on Bet's face when she makes it clear she knows Stella Rigby has been 'had' by Councillor Potts in more ways than one!

This Comment Contains Spoilers!!! Wow Neil is certainly a complex piece of work. I find it hard to see what Angie and Denise for that matter saw in him. I don't think he ever got over Denise and his obsession caused Angie to suffer and get hurt. Not sorry to see the back of him. I actually really like Angie's character and am glad she chucked Neil. She always worked better as an independent woman. Not afraid to speak her mind. Especially towards Jenny Bradley and let's face it, Jenny constantly needed a good talking to. She was no pushover either except when it came to Neil. She saw what she wanted and went for it. Definitely a good character in this era. I feel Hanif should have been kept in the show. His relationship with Denise for me worked really well. Much better than with Ken Barlow which for me was a big mistake in the show and took Denise's character through a personality change that should never have happened. She seemed so much happier with him and Of course Ayub Khan Din who played Hanif went on to write the very successful East is East and West is West. Two brilliant films worth a watch. In the same way I also feel Stella Rigby was very under utilised. Vivienne Ross makes a statement when she's on screen and Stella was definitely more than a match for Bet. The two worked well off each other especially against Harry Potts. They could have had competitions between the Rover's and the White Swan (Which I think they did a quiz in 1985) which could have led to some very comedic moments. It would have been a great way to play on the legacy of the rivalry between Annie Walker and Nellie Harvey (Nellie should have been used more too).

I have to laugh how some of the actors seem to break during their scenes with Raquel. Sarah Lancashire delivers her lines deadpan and the other character can't keep a straight face. Julie Goodyear seems to be only one who doesn't break. Case in point 2:47:39 Noticed it also in scenes with Raquel and Rita.

At least that's the last time (fingers crossed) I'll need to hear Bet refer to Tenerife as "tenereefee". Don't know if she just doesn't know how to pronounce it or she thinks it's charming but it boxes my lugs each time I hear her say it 🙉
@EveHenleySpread Жыл бұрын
It’s actually more or less the correct pronouncement though isn’t it? Maybe not the ‘reefy’ accentuation she does, but it’s more correct than most Brits saying Tenner reef 🤷🏼♂️

IMDB show Steve Halliwell as appearing between 84 & 94 as four different characters over thirteen episodes. In Episode 2829 (9th May 1988), in which Steve appears, Percy is told he's past retirement age & must leave the community centre. This is a silly Theory but do you think they cast Stella Rigby because they couldn't get Cilla Black no offence to the actress she's very similar to Cilla
@EveHenleySpread2 жыл бұрын
She did have quite a look of Cilla yes! I think the writers here were just trying to repeat the rivalry Annie Walker had with Nelly Harvey of The Laughing Donkey (played by Mollie Sugden). So Bet had her own rival landlady in Stella.

Going over it is one thing but paying to have it dropped onto the backyard of a house you don’t own/rent/have anything to do with seems like the bigger deal to me. THAT should come with SOME consequences, right? Seems like England let’s you do anything and won’t punish people because someone might get hurt feelings. 2:42:50 "I've seen more than enough for wun night, Mr Barnes." Yet ANOTHER Corrie character with a Yorkshire accent, in a series supposedly set in the Manchester area. Doug Murray speaks with one too, though the actor's Welsh.
@EveHenleySpread2 ай бұрын
Des is from Hartlepool
@staceygrove59762 ай бұрын
@@EveHenleySpread Yes, I knew about Des, but the line I quoted is from the guy who's interested in buying his house (Mr Wilkie). Yorkshire accents in The Street are a bit of a bugbear of mine - throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s a high proportion of the cast seemed to have them (eg from this period in 1993 Ivy Brennan, Don Brennan, Angie Freeman, Alf Roberts, Vera Duckworth, Doug Murray, Liz McDonald....)
@EveHenleySpread2 ай бұрын
@staceygrove5976 yep you’re right, plenty of scouse accents too i.e. Hilda Ogden, Len Fairclough, Eddie Yeats to name but 3! Not many Mancs, Jack Duckworth was definitely one!
@staceygrove59762 ай бұрын
@@EveHenleySpread There are two distinct varieties of 'Manc' accents in Corrie. People like Jack Duckworth, Rita, Bet, Sally and Tracey speak in a sort of 'peripheral' Greater Manchester accent that you hear in places like Oldham, Rochdale and Bolton, whereas the likes of Kevin Webster and Steve McDonald have a more pure 'urban' Manc sound. You can tell the difference in the way these characters pronounce the long 'A' sound in words like 'mate', which is very broad and 'flat' in the peripheral accent, but much closer to standard English in the 'urban' version. Also you could well imagine Kevin referring to 'Man Citeh', but not Jack! An accent you don't hear in these early 1990s episodes is the one that's associated with the Blackburn-Accrington area, which became familiar through the characters of Hayley Cropper and Janice Battersby later on in the decade. Len Fairclough's assistant Jerry Booth also had this accent.
