This is a great tutorial. I've been teaching with Canon's in my courses for years, and always have students default to 800 iso. You've opened my eyes. Your image is very clean with little noise. I also like the use of the spot exposure tool. Thanks!

Hey Rubidium, today I was filming some scenes at a steel engineering facility and dropped my ISO to 200 for some dark welding and grinding shots (50p) and I have to say the difference was huge. I'm looking at my rushes in Resolve and the blacks are clean as (noticeably better) and the tight waveform confirms it. Well done and thanks so much for the tip and the chart. It all makes sense. I really appreciate your sharing your knowledge and experience for us C200 guys. Keep up the great work!

Thank you so much for the video! Very helpful info! I've read the Canon info and other videos regarding the native ISO 800 allowing for a greater dynamic range. I find I still take the photography approach a lot and keep the ISO as low as possible for less noise. The C200 does an amazing job with higher ISO's. I've shot up to 12800 and with a little noise reduction, image looks fantastic. Coming from a 5D Mark III, being able to shoot up to 12800 with little trouble is amazing! Thanks again for your C200 videos! Great stuff!

One semi-related suggestion to help with noise (specifically in low light/higher ISO situations) would be to not shoot with the log gamma but on something like Wide DR. I've found this helps greatly in the dark, as the dynamic range your sacrificing isn't as much a priority as managing noise in those situation. Fantastic vid BTW! I had been waiting too see about correct exposure with the C200 specifically.
@overnightclassic2
@overnightclassic2 6 жыл бұрын
Log gamuts don't have more "noise." Once you grade them where they're supposed to be, they have the same noise as if you shot them in rec 709 in the first place.

Thanks Crimson Engine for the advice! I've also found out that the ARRI LUT + some brightness,contrast tweaking in Resolve works really great for the C200. But I really hope that BMD implements the real RAW panel. Right now it's still greyed out for C200 RAW files.
@overnightclassic2
@overnightclassic2 6 жыл бұрын
Using LUTS like that are wrong. LUTS are predefined for a specific color gamut/color space, as well as native ISO and daylight white balance. Anything other than that and the colors will be wrong. That's why Arri has so many IDT's for their ACES workflow because you need to account for every color temperature/iso combination.
@Crimsonengine
@Crimsonengine 6 жыл бұрын
That’s the advantage of Raw. You can apply a lut, then shift the color balance and contrast until it fits.
@overnightclassic2
@overnightclassic2 6 жыл бұрын
But that's not how it works, because the individual color transforms are built upon color temperature and iso. This is not simply fixing the "color balance and contrast." You can see this more when you use the color space transform node in Resolve. It's intended for 6000K images, and when you use tungsten images, the results are completely incorrect. It's fine if it gives you are result that you like, but it's not going to be technically accurate. The new GEN 4 color science in the blackmagic cameras now features a "extended video" option which is basically a nicely colored image that you don't have to grade. It took them years to put this into their cameras because it's not as simple as slapping on a LUT and calling it a day. They had to carefully map each color temperature and ISO to give the best results. Some cameras map two color temperatures on the opposite ends of the spectrum and then interpolate between, but Blackmagic chose the accurate route.
@Crimsonengine
@Crimsonengine 6 жыл бұрын
I appreciate what you're saying, Mo. In resolve 14, because the Raw module for Canon Raw lite CRMs wasn't finished yet, Resolve enabled color temp slider in the wheels to conform the color temp setting on the undebayered Raw, meaning that the slider actually does change the color temp of the video, not just tint it. This is the huge advantage of shooting Raw: that you can change the temperature in post.

No worries. Putting middle grey at 35 IRE will give you the most dynamic range. In a controlled environment, I'm less worried about DR and more concerned with noise. At 40-55 you get a lot less noise and only slightly less DR.

Hİ Mr. Engine I would be pleasure if you reply my question. I am trying to be more familiar with exposure but I am really stuck with Canon c300 mkii with shogun inferno. 1- For Proses Raw with shogun inferno what is the proper exposure? I mean if I use waveform on inferno for exposure, where 18% grey card should be on? And would it be changed both c log 2 and 3? 2- İf I decided to shoot internally C log 2- cinema gamut- production main setting for C300 mkii where grey card should be?
@Crimsonengine

Technically middle gray on clog2 and 3 is between 32 & 38 IRE. This might give you the most dynamic range, but it’s pretty noisey. I usually go with 45-50 for both.

Thank you for watching! I don't use the CRD app at all. I import the CRM files right into resolve from the CFast card. You should be fine with low light as long as you keep your Iso under 400. If its a really dark scene, shoot with a appropriate lens and raise the ISO if you have to, then remove noise digitally.

But essentially the face stays in focus perfectly and without the subject even moving that much (or at all in some cases), while keeping focus on the face, if you are looking at the background you notice it frantically pulsing in out 2-4 times in a second. You wouldn’t notice much if you’re just looking on face. Maybe I’ll upload something here in youtube

I have to expose very, very, very, verrrrrrry far to the right, otherwise I get horrendous red noise everywhere. The output on my shogun flame monitor, the c200's waveform monitor and the c200's exposure meter will all look way overexposed. However, when I bring the .crm file into Resolve, the highlights aren't even close to being overexpose and I can actually push them much further. Voila! No red noise. I'm not sure what is going on. I'm not sure if it's a problem because I can get great footage this way.
@Crimsonengine
@Crimsonengine 6 жыл бұрын
I think this is because Raw on the c200 is Clog2, but you can only monitor in Clog3, which is a brighter color space. This is kind of a mystery why you can't 'see' the clog2, and hopefully something they'll fix in a future firmware.
@hyalightfilms4545
@hyalightfilms4545 6 жыл бұрын
so the actual baked-in gamma is clog2 and changing the settings only results in a monitoring change?
@Crimsonengine
@Crimsonengine 6 жыл бұрын
Hyalight Films not baked in, because the Raw is just unbayered light information, but it has the exposure of clog2 because that’s the natural range of the sensor. If we get resolve raw module comparability in future versions, it will be easier to choose.

Hello Rubidium, I know it's a off topic question but can we use C-Box with Canon C200, with a Cfast to SSD adopter? I mean will it record with the Cfast door open, or not? -Thanks kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoDUm4KLfbN1oc0

I'm not sure. I don't really want to try it on my unit incase it bricks it :) I wonder if lenspro or one of the rental houses has tried it. Might be worth emailing them. I like my Cfast cards :)

Thanks for reply I love this camera but cfast cards are too expensive thinking to buy the camera and run it with SSDs if possible
