What is the strange ‘p’ symbol?
@Jackal-ML20246 ай бұрын
@@zealotestheaussie5880 It's a character known as "thorn" - it's come up in a few instances where Seth has referred to "Ye Olde..." something or other in different contexts, and pronounced it with a "y" sound. Jackals were then quick to point out that the "Y" part of "Ye" in "Ye Olde" is actually from the character þ, known as "thorn," which would have had the "th" sound, meaning "Ye" would be pronounced as "the" if the thorn character is pronounced correctly. So the joke is swapping out the word "Thorn" in the title for the character þ, which is also "thorn."

@@zealotestheaussie5880 What the other replies (although excellent in explaining what the "thorn" is, see last week's Correction for the explanation of that) are missing, is that during the "Lockdown Attic" version of Corrections, there was a series of jokes about Seth having multiple copies of the same book in his space (on the desk, behind him, etc). This was a book called The Thorn Birds. In this episode, they brought back the cover of the book and replaced the word "thorn" with the symbol. Great callback!!

Two corrections to the corrections: In Polish, it is not an L sound. it is an Ł, and that little stroke through the L indicates a different letter altogether. In modern Polish, and for anyone trying to pronounce kiełbasa the old fashioned way, it is pronounced like a W. Seth was correct. Another, from the previous week, Dr. Jill Biden does not have a PhD or an MD. She has an EdD, which is a third thing entirely.

Ha! A Polish word featuring on corrections! And the kiełbasa-Tarantino collaboration - so good! I haven't felt this proud to be Polish in a long time. The pronunciation correction: in Polish, kiełbasa is spelled with a 'ł' (an 'l' with a little dash going across) which is pronounced like a 'w' in English. The closest orthographic transcription I can think of would be: kyeu-BA-sa (stress on the second syllable). Looking forward to hearing it pronounced the Sethly way!

I'm Canadian, and I've only ever heard it pronounced "Koo-bassa" in Midwest Canada. Lots of Polish and Ukrainian immigrants here for generations.
@prenks236 ай бұрын
Hello, fellow Canadian! In Ukrainian, it's pronounced kovbasa. That vb isn't really something we come across in English, so I think it kind of morphed into koobassa. Kind of like how pyrohy turned into puhdyhy for much of the diaspora. Slava Ukraini!

@@kimbauer6666 In Ukrainian, both varenyky and pyrohy are used, though you are more likely to find pyrohy in the west closer to Poland. So while pierogi is a Polish word, Ukrainians closer to the Polish border (at one time the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth extended into modern day Ukraine) transformed it into pyrohy. My family is from the western part of the country around Lviv, so that's the word I grew up using. As for being the same thing, it's a pretty pan-Slavic food, and most Eastern European countries will have some variation of it. At the end of the day, it's a dumpling, and most cultures have figured out that wrapping food in dough is delicious 😊

'snorting coke' is slang so it doesn't need to follow strict etymological rules. It's what everyone that's ever done it calls it. 'snort' is listed in Websters as { 1: to force the breath violently through the nostrils with a loud, harsh sound } and { 3 : to take in a drug by inhalation through the nose }. A loud sound can be made breathing in as well as breathing out. People snort all the time while convulsively laughing and breathing in and out. Obviously the jackal that wrote that correction has never been around people that do it.

Previously on Celebrity Baby Teeth 🤩👶🦷 . . . Page 1 Welcome back to Late Night. You know we like to do a lot of different types of comedy on this show. Often we do segments that we want you to think about. Sometimes we do segments you don’t have to think about. But then, every once in a while, we’ll do a segment that you probably shouldn’t think about. Our next segment is one you should almost certainly not think about too much. Please put your hands together for Celebrity Baby Teeth. Oh. Look who’s still here. Interesting. The fact that you’ve decided to stick around Page 2 for a segment titled ‘Celebrity Baby Teeth,’ might tell you something about yourself. Well, let’s proceed. First up. Let’s take a look at this lovely set of baby teeth that belonged to none other than actor Jude Law. Wow. Just look at these perfect baby teeth. They were once inside Jude Law’s mouth. Now, you’re undoubtedly wondering, ‘Why are we looking at Jude Law’s baby teeth? What reaction am I supposed to be having to seeing celebrity baby teeth?’ How Page 3 did Seth get Jude Law’s teeth anyway? These are things that, in all honesty, you probably shouldn’t think about. Instead, just look at more celebrity baby teeth. You’ve seen her in ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.’ Now, take a look at Dakota Johnson’s 50 baby teeth. 50 baby teeth, you ask, isn’t that way too many baby teeth? Those are questions you don’t want to ask. You’re likely also wondering if Dakota Johnson knows her baby teeth are currently being Page 4 displayed on television - And you’re wondering if perhaps it’s not the normal, upstanding person I’ve presented myself as for decades in the public eye, but rather an avid collector of celebrity baby teeth. Again, it’s probably best not to dwell on these questions, as they’ll likely only make you feel uncomfortable and a little upset. Instead, why not enjoy looking at Samuel L. Jackson’s baby teeth? Oh, look. This one came with a little Kangol on it. Page 5 Just kidding. It didn’t come like that. We added it to the tooth. Cute, right? At this point, you might be wondering why you, the viewer, are still watching Celebrity Baby Teeth. Or perhaps you’re asking yourself just how deep this twisted rabbit hole goes. Don’t try to answer those questions. Instead, answer this one. Can you guess whose baby teeth these are? If you, for some reason, guessed British power couple David and Victoria Beckham, then you are correct. Page 6 And look, I made these into little bracelets I sometimes tie on my wrist and wear around the house. Now before you ask, ‘Seth are you sure everything is okay with you? Are you sure you don’t need some help?’ Just shh! Shh! Shh. Shh. Alright, let’s move on to . . . Oh, no, this is not good. This is not good at all. It appears as though we’re all out of celebrity baby teeth. Guess I’ll have to go to the vault. ‘Oh, Jesus, the vault?’ you think to yourself. Well, like with most of what you’ve seen today, you probably shouldn’t Page 7 think too much about the vault. You shouldn’t think about the implications surrounding the fact that I have hoards of celebrity baby teeth locked in a safe. You shouldn’t think about the fact that a few of Kevin Costner’s adult teeth are actually mixed up in here, too. And you definitely shouldn’t think about how these are Michelle Yeoh’s tonsils . . .
