Tora! Tora! Tora! actually had ANOTHER plane accident on film. The B-17 earlier in the film had a landing gear failure where they couldn't get the gear down. The pilot radioed it in and said he was going to have to slide it on the belly. The filmmakers had him circle around while they got cameras moved into position and then they filmed him making that landing, then reworked the script to include it.

I feel like that scene in Tora!x3 is just so perfect because the sheer terror-laced confusion matches perfectly with what on-ground personnel would actually react back in the day. They kind of have to stay on the ground per orders, but they were also shocked and confused as to why an attack would be happening in that particular day when there's no news nor orders to anticipate a fight. Props to the cameraman who keeps rolling, he probably thought it was all part of the act lol.

Talking about the Rambo tree-branch sequence, one thing that you guys might touch on in the future: The relationship between stunt coordinator and prop master. How the limitations of what a stunt can be is changed and elevated by the ingenuity of a particular prop or modification on set. Just a thought.

Related to this, there's a helicopter scene from the Wonder Woman show that is why they hired a stunt supervisor. Wonder Woman grabs the skids of a helicopter flying off to follow it. Lynda Carter did the stunt not knowing she was supposed to put her hands through safety straps, so she was just hanging from it until it circled back a minute later. Nearly killing your star opens up that budget.

The record for most cars wrecked on a movie is blues brothers. Some crazy car stuff in there. Also the spirit of saint Louis has some crazy mid air stunts. A guy climbs from one plane to another, I was actually surprised when that happened

You guys need to check out stunts from the show “The Fall Guy”. It was broadcasted during the 80s and the entire show is about a Hollywood stunt man who earns some extra cash being a bounty hunter. There are some impressive stunts throughout the show.

I loved that series. There are a couple of really hairy pick-up truck jumps in the title sequence; along with the (SPOILER for an almost 50-year-old movie) car getting his by a train from "Dirty Larry, Cazy Mary".

We had a retired neighbor who did camera work for shows, commercials, smaller movies. He would record everything. Street fights (lots of dumb gang fights back then) parties, etc. He never flinched, he filmed everything until he was done. There was a drive by at our neighborhood park, he filmed the whole thing. Old school cameramen are something else.

I think it'd be interesting to see a Stuntmen React to movies where stunts have gone wrong in modern movies. Everyone talks about the stunt performers death in Ben-Hur in the 20's like it's some legendary thing that never happens anymore, but stunt performers have died on Deadpool 2, The Walking Dead, The Expendables 2, very recent stuff! And obviously serious injuries happen all the time too, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in particular had a terrifying production. I just think it'd be nice to bring attention to these people and talk about either the bad work conditions that caused the issues or if it was just unlucky.

Wish they'd covered the high fall from the beginning of Lethal Weapon as well, they printed the image of the car and the street ONTO the airbag for the stuntwoman to leap into, and cut at the moment of impact, so it looked like she was landing on the roof of a real car. I remember watching that sequence over and over again trying to figure out how they pulled off that gag

Agreed. As a kid when Lethal Weapon was released, I always noticed that she is off-centre while falling but the after-shot shows her having hit dead centre, but it wasnt until DVD came out that I finally noticed that the car was a painted air-bag!

Same deal with that shot; it took several years for me to approach it with a fresh pair of eyes. Something about the perspective of the car itself (from that angle) struck me as a little 'off,' and it was then that it dawned on me. Clever use of the idea, repurposed in the freeway chase in the third movie (dropping through the scaffolding after dangling from the unfinished section of the roadway), but they messed that one shot up because the canvas drop with the planks printed/painted on it was left still unkempt from a previous test fall (I'm assuming, anyway). Donner always had a thing for one perfect 'how the hell did they do that' shot in each of his movies. Think back on the 'Can you read my mind' sequence in Superman, where he flies away and is back at the apartment door in mere seconds; pre-internet, I finally worked out that it was a rear-projection shot combined with live action. That only occurred because I was watching a less pristine print and the grain of the rear projected image was more noticeable. It's still a great shame that Mic Rodgers never quite got the recognition he deserved for being Mr Gibson's stunt double (probably on camera for around 75% of all of the action scenes!) for close to twenty years, but it's always nice to see him roped into the background cast in LW1 (as the bus driver) and LW3 as a uniformed cop at the opening bomb threat scene.

That's the fight where Thomas Jane accidentally stabbed Kevin Nash in the chest, for real. 😱 And then Kevin Nash said something like, "I've had worse". got patched up, and kept on with filming the scene. No wonder Thomas Jane was terrified of him 😄

I really appreciate these react videos. Listening to the breakdowns and discussions helps me appreciate stunts, especially the stunt actors and coordinators, so much more. For me, it doesn't take away from the entertainment or immersion while watching newer films. Instead, it actually adds to the enjoyment when I see or recognise something as a stunt instead of CGI - especially if it's something pretty bad-ass or dangerous - because I now feel I have a much deeper understanding and appreciation for the art and the people involved. I was always intrigued with the outtakes shown during the end credits of Jackie Chan films, which were the first highlights to me of the kinds of risks and dangers involved in performing stunts, but this series has helped me further my understanding due to the discussions. So, a big thank you to everyone in this series and, of course, much love to the stunt actors! Also, it's always great to see Gui! 👍

I would love it if you could give your opinion on one of the fights in the show Warrior Nun. There are 2 really good ones. First, in S01E04 32:20-33:40 there is a hallway scene of a battle nun against security guards. It is an extremely well-executed, fast, and efficient takedown that looks and feels a lot more realistic than a lot of stuff I have seen on the big screen. In S01E04 30:40-32:24 there is a big chaotic group fight inside a church. While the execution is not the same as the hallway scene in S01 (because it is the actors doing all the moves and not trained stunt doubles) the fight is very interestingly choreographed. It was done in a single giant shot & they had only 3 takes or so to get it right.

With the heli, you can see what happened in your clip, the tail rotor struck the ground and disintegrated, this means there's nothing preventing the heli chassis wanting to rotate along with the rotors and you lose all control.

Correction: not along with the main rotor, but in the opposite direction. The main rotor exerts torque on the fuselage, trying to spin the fuselage in the opposite direction (which is countered by the tail rotor).

At least they were intending to land, anyway, so they'd lost most of the forward motion and the crash was relatively low speed. Still a proper brown alert for the pilot, I expect.

The Phantom (1996) opening truck chase, primarily when the bridge is failing and the truck inverts, and the stunt guys have to blind catch a vine in a canyon as the fall out of the truck. Also, the plane ditch scene. Two people from a low flying bi-plane, to a single below at matched speed before the plane crash. Definitely an underrated Comic book movie of the 90's. Great episode guys!

Excellent episode as always! I'd like you guys to do an animators react episode to the 1986 Hungarian movie Macskafogó (Cat City in the US). It can be almost anything, the city ambush against the mice, how the Mexican bats shoot at the cats with revolvers or at the end when they get captured at the end. There's also a 2nd part called Cat of Satan which came out in 2007, where the antagonist squshes mice and their car into a large dish which they play back to watch the footage of the incident.

Fun fact! The P-40 pictured here (the airplane that blew up) is a tail-dragger. Most planes today have tricycle landing gear, meaning the main wheels are rear of the center of gravity of the craft, and the "steering" wheel is under the nose, holding the nose up. But tail-draggers have the main gear FORWARD of the center of gravity, so the TAIL is the part of the plane that needs to be held up by the steering wheel. That wheel acts like a caster. The advantage is a lighter airplane, with less hardware needed to keep the propeller off the ground; the disadvantage is that the rear tail wheel acts like a caster on a shopping cart. Because it is BEHIND the main gear, any deviation in direction gets amplified, and the plain goes into what we call a Ground Loop. Imagine giving a shopping cart a stiff push in reverse, how it tends to spin out of control. That's exactly what's happening to the plane here! My dad recently built a tail-dragger airplane in his garage, and has to modify the controls and rear landing gear to counter the ground loop issue.

A couple lifetimes ago, I worked on a movie that had Bill Riley as one of the stars. He's the guy in the blue suit in the helicopter scene for "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes". I asked him about the scene and he confirmed that he was in the chopper when the tail rotor hit the ground.. He and the pilot got out safely, and just continued on with the scene. The kamikaze tomato line was improvised in ADR. The chopper burst into flames. It was later found out the owner/operator wasn't licensed to do that kind of work, so the insurance didn't cover it and most of the profits from the movie went to pay off the cost for the helicopter. As Schoolhouse Rocky used to say.... Knowledge is Power !

STUNTMEN REACT IDEA. 1974 James Bond Man with the Golden Gun. When they jump the car over a river, it barrel rolls once and lands on its wheels. They actually did this stunt. The worked out the math for the speed, weight, and wind speed/direction, to land it perfectly. Plus there's a fun slide whistle noise!

Tora Tora Tora stunt: the moving crashing plane was controlled from that plane seen in the background, and a cable can be seen trailing behind the crashing fake plane. The planes made for this sequence were a mix of fibreglass over metal frames ( visible when one explodes ), and some with real aero-engines driving props that move the plane. The prop centre boss or spinner can be seen to collapse and disintegrate into the prop as it begins to move. This gag was then run a second time, to try and get it to work as expected. This is the one that can be seen to explode on the runway and spin to a halt, with it's prop coming off and whirring to s stop. These two runs had many cameras on them, and most of the cameras' shots were used in the film as shown. Again, both planes are controlled by cable from behind the plane standing on the runway at the rear of shot. Also: a plane used as a Japanese bomber ditched successfully into the harbour during filming, was not captured on film, and was later recovered. I would LOVE to see more “stunts gone wrong” and the analysis of WHY they went wrong. What was supposed to happen and what happened instead. Not so much injuries or anything, just things going off plan, like Lethal Weapon.

Since you just reacted to a crashing helicopter, I recommend you react to the scene from apocalypse now with the little bird rocket hit. The pyrotechnics team put a little too much explosive on the heli the explosion was so large that the pilot lost control of the hole for a moment but regained it after a few seconds. After landing, the production team praised him for his amazing stunt flying ability for making it look like he really lost control of the heli not knowing theat he actualy did.

This past New Years my family actually decided to watch the first two Rambo movies for whatever reason. And yeah, I was pretty impressed and intrigued about that cliff fall scene. Hearing Stallone actually broke his rib, and just now looking into all the other injuries he endured. Really makes me respect the film as a whole way more.

Tora Tora Tora is my favorite war movie. Just the practical stunts and effects are great. Fun fact: In that same movie, they're supposed to get a shot of the Nevada pulling away from the dock, all majestic and awesome Well, the Navy didn't tell the production crew they were about to move the ship, so the crew was caught by surprise and had to hurriedly start filming, which is why they only catch the aft end in the scene.

There's a production of The Goes Wrong Show called 90 Degrees where part of the set is built upside down, but it's shot right side up. There's a character who's dying in bed, and then he just flies straight up (or rather down) through the ceiling when he dies.

Killer Tomatoes!!!! I remember watching that on VHS! Looking at that, the helicopter damaged the tail rotor when it flared to slow down. The body of the helicopter spins in the opposite direction of the main blades and the tail rotor is there to counter that rotation.

It’s a little stunt, but I just watched the Season 7 episode of Night Court, “Branded: Part 2,” and the cold open ends with the character of Phil doing a classic “fainting and falling backwards” gag. Except instead of falling through the doorway, he hits his head on the side. 10/10 stunt injury!

As a kid in the 90s my babysitter was obsessed with Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. So much nostalgia. I never knew the helicopter crash was an accident. Is TORA! TORA! TORA! part of the inspiration for some of the gaffs joked about in Tropic Thunder?

You can see the chopper clipped the ground as it was coming in, which caused it to lose control. At that point, they're along for the ride.
