As a single person in Edmonton, monthly rent for 1Br is $1700, groceries $600, no car, cell phone $75, Internet $80. If you don't have a job that pays at least $70,000/yr (gross income), you are struggling, you'll need more if you need/have a car. This is for single person, not in a relationship.

Makes much more sense to live affordably while your building wealth. Why so many new immigrants stay in Toronto/Vancouver is beyond my understanding. My family moved here in the 1800's, landing in Saskatchewan and began to build wealth. Through time we own properties in Alberta and Ontario. Expenses are very important to monitor, you are a smart couple.

Nice comparison ! However I differ from your views, the focus should be on income and not expenditure. To do a proper analysis you should also compare the jobs and wages in calgary and Toronto/Vancouver. Yes, there’s a mad rush in these cities and there’s a reason for it. The total difference won’t be more than 20-25% monthly and the same goes in earnings. Alberta is good for investment but not for living

1. For the car, do you pay for plates every year, do you pay for driver's license every year, do you pay for car insurance. And if you pay for all of this what are your numbers? Is the insurance with a bank or it's monopolized? 2. Electricity - 250 monthly? for how many rooms? If this an average or this is cost for summer only? 3. Describe what is tenant insurance and how did you get it. More details, please. 4. What utilities do you pay? As example in Quebec we don't pay for water. Do you pay for water renting apartment? And if yes, how much. 5. How is water compared to Toronto? Hard/soft? 6. How is the winter compared to Toronto? Some say is harsh. Is it worse than in Toronto or same? 7. If you are renting, do you pay Strata or it's included in the rent? 8. Do you spend lot of time in traffic compared to Toronto or it's much better? 9. Do you have kids? And if yes, how much do you spend for summer, winter and spring camps? 10.I know Toronto doesn't have outdoor activities, did you find outdoor activities to be "expensive" in Calgary or not? 11.Bars/restaurants - cheaper than Toronto? 12.Theaters/Cinema - cheaper or expensive compared to Toronto? 13.Do you go ski in winter? Is it crowded? Is it easy to get there? Things like groceries, TV, Netflix and other things vary from family to family. Not everyone is watching TV :). The same for car. Not everyone is buying car as soon as is coming to Calgary :). What do you buy beside dealer? Sorry for bombarding with so many questions, but these details are much more important to understand what people have to pay on daily/monthly basis. Thanks

So I assume from all you've said that you ARE saving money, albeit not very much. I see that you are living with some luxury items like a smart phone, and larger vehicle. Also, living downtown will add to the cost of rent as opposed to living further away. I guess it's a choice one makes whether to economize a little or a lot.

Comparing Toronto to Calgary is useless... GTA is not just one city but amalgamation of 6 major cities and suburbs.. Metropolitan vibes and beautiful Harbourfront of Toronto can not be matched with any other city in Canada ... Calgary is good city and comparable to Montreal or Edmonton or Winnipeg.. But Toronto is expensive for a reason everyone wants to live there because of mild winters and proximity to New York , New jersey

Hardly to be close to any US city. Traditionally, Toronto is/was the business hub of Canada. Also, cosmopolitan in that it has many well established tight knit immigrant communities, allowing newcomers to feel less isolated and alone.
