Hi Adam, I know things have gone up in the Philippines but back in the UK it's excruciating if you took your household budget before you left and applied the new prices for gas electric units and food costs I think you would be shocked. As for council tax it's now becoming more expensive than a mortgage. It's nice to escape to the Philippines for half an hour to see how you doing 👍🇬🇧

It's been six years since I last came to Ormoc and I expect things to be more expensive now. As I'm on a 2 week holiday, my spendings will be different from people who are actually living there. I won't be cooking, but eating out every time and most of the time I will invite friends to join me for lunch or dinner, so I'm budgeting a daily expense of 5,000p. Fingers crossed that this will be sufficient. Of course that doesn't include travel and airbnb.

Been to Philippines in my house for 3 weeks. Was not able to go there since the beginning of the pandemic and i really noticed that all the prices for basic things have increased significantly. I agree with you about to grow your own vegetables and fruits and this is what i did in my lot. It has down a lot the food budget and also you know what you eat, not full of pesticides and we sell our excess to the people at cheaper cost than in market. I also have some chickens for eggs and also for meat as well as pigs that we kill every month. For electricity, you are lucky to pay only 2500/3000 pesos as the location we are is too hot and need always aircon switch on part of the night to be able to sleep so we spend 10000 pesos each month snd its too much. So i already planned to install solar panels as it a too big budget each month for electric.

Regardless which country or city you live in, cost of living will get worse as we transition from Diesel fuels to clean energy. In meantime, it is best to live in the province as you can grow your own food but you have to learn to grow organic way as traditional farming that relies on fertilizer will be costly. Growing a food forests is more sustainable and with different varieties of plants, its less prone from deceases..

If you stick to locally grown fruits and vegetables, they are much more affordable. Colder weather vegetables and fruits like broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, strawberries and grapes are grown mostly on the highlands (Benguet province) or imported from other countries. The cost of transport in the Philippines is quite high so anything transported from the main business hub, which is Manila, will compound the price of those goods. Actually, I think you already know that. Sorry for butting in. I’m puzzled why onions are crazy expensive in the Philippines though because they can be grown anywhere in the country. Happy vlogging to you both.

I guess less farmers in the highlands of Leyte especially part of Ormoc (Barangay Gaas maybe) that plant potato, carrot, brocculi, and etc... highland vegetables. We hope to meet you, lovely couple, in a couple of years when we retire in Leyte. Blessings!

@renatolosbanos6219
@renatolosbanos6219 Жыл бұрын
There are no large landholdings in Leyte and you can blame among others land reform for that; so small scale production translates to higher priced goods. Those broccolis, cauliflower, onions and potatoes seen here probably came from Mindanao or Luzon that's why prices you pay are relatively higher than those we pay here in Manila. If you want to enjoy the same goods that you routinely get cheap in UK then you will have to pay more; that's the downside. Of course there are a lot more upsides with your decision to settle in Ormoc and you can take comfort with that.
@AdamandJanesLifestyle

After retiring and moving here last year with kids and wife, we still feel this place is a bargain compare to USA prices. I went out for coffee for three of us plus pastries and cost us only $12 for all, this would have cost me $35 back home. Internet, and services like haircuts or hair saloons still a bargain and home improvements (material and labor) are cheap also. High cost items still there though includes gas, vegetables and fresh fruits, best to get them in the open market, lots of them here in Cavite. Hard to set a budget since we go all over the place and eat out often, but we try to spend our $$ wisely when we can. Never waste $$ when you can as they say and save for tomorrow!!

When you talk about the Philippines not being a cheap place to live, have you compared the price increases to those of where you came from. May this would show it is still a cheaper place to live. As here in N.Z. All prices have gone though the roof so to say. We found the fruit and veg in the Philippines super markets are of very low quality. Like you we buy from the local growers.

You're saying the Philippines isn't cheap, but 400,000 equals about $620 USD a month. That's very cheap. You'd have a hard time even finding rent alone that cheap here. But I do understand, I was just there recently and things are more expensive.
@AdamandJanesLifestyle
@AdamandJanesLifestyle Жыл бұрын
Cheap compared to average income here it is not. Things in the Philippines are very comparable to other countries where once they were not. If you need to rent then of course you need more income. In the UK this now is far more than before. It all depends on how you live your life here as to how much money you need. Tell the people here on $300 a month the Philippines is cheap with all the cost of living increases.
@gordonb1737

@@AdamandJanesLifestyle Still, dirt cheap compared to here, which is what I was referring to. I'm aware of the average Filipino financial problems. I send money monthly to inlaws to help.
@AdamandJanesLifestyle
@AdamandJanesLifestyle Жыл бұрын
@@gordonb1737 it is if you are earning the same money as you are in the UK. The average wage here is far lower so not dirt cheap by any consideration as all. That’s what cost of living is based on. Wages vs cost of things.
@gordonb1737
@gordonb1737 Жыл бұрын
@AdamandJanesLifestyle you're right. I meant for the average westerner retiring there, it's still very cheap for them compared to here or the UK. The average working Filipino is earning roughly $5 USD per day.
