I eat 3lbs+ of meat daily, and can get away with around $50-$60 a week feeding myself mostly chicken, brown rice and some veggies. Chicken is $1.99/lbs in my area. The average guy won't need more than 1lbs of meat daily, but I'm 250lbs, so surely $400 a month for a family of 4 is more than reasonable. 2 small kids won't eat much.
@bospivey80176 жыл бұрын
The meat alone at 3+ lbs a day is over $42 just in the meat per week. So the veggies and rice and other various things you consume only cost ~$8? Not bad I guess. But $400 a month for a family of 4 is pretty hard. I'm in the situation right now and put in about 3500 calories a day, so that probably doesn't help, but still.

Seriously though...you gotta look into just buying a whole cow/buffalo from a local farmer there...I know you said you don't think about it much, but you'd save TONS of cash, and you can get all the meat prepared just the way you want it...you do a lot of burger, they'll grind it all up for you so all you gotta do is thaw it. You'd just have to get a couple freezers to hold it all. I don't think moving them around will be an issue in your household!

@Gungho736 жыл бұрын
@Martin Luther the better benefit of doing that would be getting cows he knows, and having the farmer raise them on specific grains or whatever Shaw prefers, which farmers often will do if you list it. In that way, the cost could become less savings, but then Shaw would know exactly what goes into his meat and can have a more particular diet depending on the training season. The epitome/height of that I think is wagyu beef in Japan/Australia, in which the animals not only lead pretty much stress free lives, but you know the historical background of the animal and what they eat to the point you get a radically different tasting animal. That's definitely too far in costs for Shaw to do regularly, but you get the point of how a relationship with a farmer can lead to just flat out better/healthier meat; felt the need to bring up because everyones worried on cost and less on benefits.
@Filomatia6 жыл бұрын
I think the problem with this idea is that Brian would have to bring home ALL cuts in whatever proportion the cow provides, whilst what he does now is bring home exactly what he needs in the proportion he needs.

Brian eats roughly 1000 kilogram of meat per year. If you count out the bones, skeleton, most of the fat, the skin, and all the inedible parts on a cow, Brian eats roughly 2 cows worth of meat a year. Brian has also said that when he is preparing for WSM or any other contest, he tries to eat more than he regularly does, so that number might actually be higher than 1000 KG. That's actually incredible.

As far as the meat goes, have you ever considered just investing in a chest freezer (or two) and finding people nearby that will sell you whole/halves of beef and bison? You get really high quality meat that equals out to a pretty reasonable price per pound doing it that way.

Probably you/strong men should treat yourself as a "restaurant" and get delivery from the same providers for restaurants, we "restaurants" get things in bulk at a cheaper price than Costco. It would be nice to get your supplies on fixed days as restaurants do.

I just discovered this locally. And for 50ish% of my diet it's cheaper. I can get 10lbs of whole fat yogurt for the price of one lb at the store. Same brand. Just need storage for it all.

I'm sure that time will come eventually but its not in sight yet. I don't blame you for not liking chicken and rice, its gross and doesn't hold any value. Red meat does so much more for you than chicken.
