Yes, a lot of Americans say “I’m gonna do….” when ordering something. It is a terrible thing to say, if you ask me, and many people don’t say please or thank you anymore. Especially on Reality TV. I am an American and think these shortcut terms are awful! Happy Birthday Alex!

Alex, when the lady who apologized in the supermarket got miffed, it may be because when she was growing up, there were different "rules" for social interactions. At least in the US, before you were born, each person did or said something that signaled the ineraction was complete. It could be that when you didn't acknowledge her apology (for exanple by saying something like "Oh, it's OK." or "Not to worry, no harm done.") she felt the interaction was incomplete. As an older person, I often wonder why younger people don't complete the interaction. I think it may be the difference between pre-smart phone etiquette and post-smart phone etiquette. Unlike the lady you interacted with, I never say anything. She may have been having a bad day, and your not acknowledging her apology was just the last straw for her. I don't think one way is any better or worse than the other, just different.

Also, I can totally relate to what you said about how Americans order food (at least on TV, never been to America) cause that's how I learned to do it as a Brazilian who studied English! When I went to the UK I noticed how my boyfriend and his friends/family did it and I was like "okay, the way I do it doesn't sound as polite" and I felt so embarrassed 😂 of course I said please and thank you afterwards but yes, it sounds very direct.

Madeline, not sure if you know, but there is Palm oil. in Stork margarine- this is SO frustrating, as a Vegan myself, EVERY thing has to be read, in supermarkets, because even Quarn products contain it, hidden in the ingredients list. Maybe you could use your profile to raise this with manufacturers? I've sent emails/letters and mostly NEVER get a response back!
