Cotopaxi is the name of an active stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains, in Ecuador. It’s also the name of a company that manufactures outdoor gear and is trying to do some good in the world. We’ll let you guess which one this review is about.
Founded in 2014 as a Certified B-Corp, Cotopaxi donates 2% of their revenue to help alleviate poverty. They also partner with “organizations like International Rescue Committee, Educate Girls, and Proximity Designs to provide health, education, and livelihoods in developing countries.” They do great work and make great products, one of which is the Allpa 35L Travel Pack.
The Allpa is a 35-liter, carry-on compliant pack possessing many great features and design elements. Weighing 3lb 7oz (1560g) and measuring 20 x 12 x 8in (51 x 30 x 20cm), it’s on the heavier side of things compared to other bags with the same capacity-though it isn’t egregiously hefty. Much of the weight comes from the sturdy materials Cotopaxi chooses to use: TPU-coated 1000D polyester makes up the front of the pack while 1680D ballistic nylon comprises the side, top, and bottom paneling. This combination gives the Allpa a toughness that’s hard to beat.
Overall, the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack is pleasantly hard to characterize. It can function as both a hiking pack, a work bag, or a travel pack. After our tests, we feel that it fits the travel pack role best. With it’s carry-on compliance, refined design and ample space, the Allpa is a great choice for anyone looking for a bag suited for a long weekend or a shorter vacation. While it may not be well received by taller users, if you find it comfortable to wear you won’t be disappointed.

I really love mine-wish I had chosen the True Blue, but am very happy with Black. I have used this as a personal item and love how easy it is to gather my IPad Pro with keyboard from laptop compartment and IPad Mini from tablet compartment when going through security. The different color zipper on that compartment is brilliant! The access to the inside from the top zipper is super practical for grabbing my headphone pouch and other things I need inflight. I’m 5’7” and this back fits perfectly on my frame and I like it better than a Mountain Hardware Pack I used to climb Mt. Whitney so I consider this an all-around travel pack.

Thanks for all your great reviews! I scoured the web though for a comparison between the Cotopaxi 35 and the Pacsafe EXP 45. Haven’t found one probably because they are listed as different capacity. I ordered each and they are almost IDENTICAL in size. I would even go so far as saying the Allpa carries a bit more. One of them hasn’t measured correctly. I have packed and repacked both bags and I always come up with the same conclusion. So, just to pass other info on....the straps on the Allpa are a bit more adjustable to get them closer together for my frame. I am 5’4”. The Allpa is a tad shorter so it feels better walking when it’s full. I love the more versatile space. If you go with packing cubes in the Pacsafe, you are limited how those fit in. And a lot of the Pacsafes storage is in the outside full length pocket, but hard to get to, other than shoving a coat down there. Would have liked that space inside. Allpa could use some compression straps like the Pacsafe though for when it’s not completely full. I thought Allpa add on water bottle attachment would be useless, but if you attach it two ways to the outside straps, it does a great job. The Allpa pulls in like an hourglass in between interior mesh pockets. That makes zipping it up difficult just right there. Worried that is a stress point and the zipper will break eventually. I’m going to keep the Allpa, I feel like it’s a slightly better option. I’m a bit worried when completely stuffed the Allpa is too fat for overhead bins, but I won’t be able to test that out until later this summer. BTY, I got a Weeks worth of clothes in there, including a pair of shoes (which a lot of reviews don’t show). I plan on a sling style personal item carry on to hold my wallet, knitting, book, scarf. Some of their daypacks and accessories can be kinda clowny because they use remnants from other companies that would otherwise shred them, but, I feel as though, for me, someone who likes to accessorize with colour often could wear them as quirky pieces with a fun story. Also, I do like that each one of their funkier products is one of kind and that an employee gets to design the colourway for.

Pack Hacker thanks for the response! I will give them a look. TNF duffel is just a bomb proof duffle with backpack straps and heavy TPE laminate, nothing too fancy. They are great for my outdoor adventures but for business travel, they are a little much with minimal organization.

We've also heard good things about the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel-however, we haven't taken a look at it yet so we can't say too much about it! If you're looking for incredibly durable option, you should definitely check out GORUCK. Tom used the GR2 to travel the world for two years straight-definitely a solid option. -Hannah

The Black Hole is a great duffel for sure. I have had my TNF bags for a while now and they are still going strong, so no need for new duffels at this time. I did also look at the GR2 and then I saw the price tag LOL. Looks like a great bag but the $500 price tag is hard to swallow. I have backpacking bags that were not priced that high and have taken a ton of abuse. I get their durability but do not get their price tag for what you get. Way overpriced IMO. But again, thanks for the ideas and the videos! Keep up the great work.

Yes, because even if the 50L duffel is half empty, there's still a decent chance that it might not fit your airline's size restrictions. Plus, duffels typically don't offer the same support as a backpack-style travel pack, so they can be uncomfortable to carry for extended periods. - Austin

Hipbelt isn't also ideal for petite and slim folks esp on the hip area especially if you're just wearing one layer. If fully packed and heavy the tendency is to pull up those backpack straps tight so it rides right/high and balanced on your back. The hipbelt behaves the same with shorter people like myself (5'2") wherein it rides up higher on the waist so now it's just loose lol! So yeah... practically useless to manage weight for a longer period if needed. The shoulder still bears the brunt of it all unfortunately. I also wished the laptop width was wider to accommodate a pelican laptop case so I can throw my pack around even more haha. But no - forget about it.

Hey Pistow Cam- The Allpa 35L doesn't have a metal, aluminum or stiff frame to it-most urban travel bags don't (different use case than a hike). Its a shame the waist belt isn't removable. I'm shorter so it'd work for me but the inability to remove them is an oversight in my eyes. Additionally, it would be nice if the backpack had the ability to maybe tuck away the internal zippers if you wanted to use this for EDC but i guess this is really just geared more towards traveling. I love the look of the pack and I may end up getting but really would like something that can pull double (triple?) duty. Office work, traveling and EDC all rolled up into one bag. And if there is a way to do more head to head comparisons of products that would be hugely helpful for consumers trying to figure out pros / cons or optimal luggage pick for their use case or style of travel. Personally I do a lot of international travel for work. So it’s mostly biz casual workwear, laptop, some sort of work bag to carry cables/notebook/laptop to and fro office. I like having a pack on my back vs a wheelie because I feel more mobile and have my hands free. I recently travelled with an Osprey Porter and it worked pretty well but looking to optimize further.

I had planned to use it for the Camino in 2017, but opted for a different pack after trying it out on some hikes. It's really for schlepping luggage while traveling - not hiking.

Hey Andreana! Our 15 inch Macbook Pro is about a perfect fit, anything larger probably won't fit. Hey! It really depends on the airline you're flying with as we've found that size specifications are different for most airlines. Hey SanysTube - from testing we found that this pack did work well as a daypack for work, or even for hiking, but it is best as a travel pack. Comfort-wise, your mileage may vary as we found that this does differ depending on your height. Plus the heavier materials do add some extra weight to the pack as well. 😊 - Rebecca

I love the design of this backpack. Unfortunately, all carry on backpacks that have the laptop compartment at the back are at least 200€. I'd love to find a carry on backpack like this one which has the price of an Osprey Fairview/Farpoint (~85€). Any recommendations?

The carry handles. They look like they would not be comfortable. They appear (from images) to be a single layer of webbing. Am I wrong? I hope so since I like to carry my bags by the side handle while navigating airplane aisles.

Hey Matt- the Allpa 35L straps are thinner than other packs we've reviewed. Not something we'd recommend for long term carry but they get the job done for short distances.

One problem is that you don’t have the option of checking it in, leaving it in your room or in the overhead bin. The side zip access to the main compartment can’t be locked!

Hey! Cotopaxi has this statement about their Warranty Policy: "All our products are Guaranteed For Good. We want your gear to last for a lifetime of adventures. If your product does not hold up, we'll work with you to resolve the issue. That may mean instructing you on how to repair the item yourself, returning the item to our team for repair, replacing the item, or refunding your purchase. All products have their limitations (all t-shirts will fade over time, sweaters may have some loose threads, socks will wear down, dogs can shred Luzons, if you drop your Allpa down a volcano it will most likely burn), and there may be instances that your product does not fall under our warranty. The course of action will be determined by our repairs team, but tell us a good story and we will at the least enjoy hearing about your grand adventure! Send us a note with a picture of your item and a grand tale at [e-mail] to start your claim process.
