I live near the Snowy Range , Laramie Wyoming, and I want to visit Pinedale near the Wind River Range. And your filming is absolutely beautifully done. Catherine: You are wise to take extra precautions with cougars, as they will stalk you, unlike a bear. I have hike the very trail you were on in this video. The Hoh river is an excellent steelhead flyfishing river in the winter, although the population is diminiishing.

Cat, lets talk a little bit about trail safety. Just to let you know, I'm a retired NRA certified range safety officer and rifle instructor. My suggestion to you is to carry a large cannister of bear spray and a quality fixed blade knife with a 4"-5" blade and keep them in a handy and easily accessible place. The other alternative would be to carry a handgun that you have been well trained with and are confident to do what it takes if you are ever confronted by a cougar or bear. I agree with you when you say that you are more concerned about cougars than bears. I can think of 5 people that were attacked by these big cats over the past 20 years or so. Three of them were killed and two were mauled but survived. Of all of these attacks 4 of them were on women and 1 of the victims was a man.

Cougars like most cats are sneeky, they come from behind, I guess they like rump roast ! I came across Cougar tracks in the snow before and could smell a musty oder, so I took a stick and beat a rock and shouted -- "Get Outta Here".. The smell left and I'm still here.

Yep, the cougars are everywhere now and they are a real hunter. Black bears are more of a "grouchy mood" critter. I have encountered bears, and we just kept a safe distance apart. Cougars are looking for a meal and they have gotten bolder since the hunting moratoriums have been in place for decades. They no longer fear humans. I think they need to modify the laws now that the cougars are no longer a threaten species. When I hike I have spray and a sharp and long bug examination instrument. Those bugs if they have Lyme disease are a real danger as well.

A healthy fear of cougars and/or grizzlies is necessary when hiking or camping in their territory...a grizzly with cubs is an animal you wouldn't want to have a 'close' encounter with. Try to keep in mind to wear your bear spray in a holster on a belt...if you ever had a 'close' encounter it wouldn't help you if it's in your backpack. Just some things to keep in mind from a 'mothering' standpoint, 😄😉😅🙂. Happy trails Catherine!

Hi Cat! I just started the vid, paused to say I like the feeling you create with the repetitive opening coffee prep scene because I have my fresh coffee when I sit down each Sunday to watch - it's like we are having coffee together lol 😆 I know that probably sounds silly, but really, that little coffee pot is like your opening trademark, it's just neat! I don't know what you will be saying about cougars yet I'm not that far in, but I have wondered in the past if you have a game plan for encounters with dangerous animals because so many of your hikes you have mentioned bears in the area or hoisted food up in a bag to discourage foraging 🐻. I assume you know how to handle yourself but I always pray for you to be safe out there! Thanks for these fun videos, I really look forward to them! Kind of like I'm building up to doing something similar with my cute little 24 footer Grand Design Imagine XLS BHE21. So far the driveway is the majority of my getaways because I don't want to leave my cats lol
