I thought the same thing. India officially acknowledged it lost 20 soldiers and released their names and honoured them. But china acknowledged their losses only after a month or so, and that to they acknowledged only 4 deaths when in reality the Chinese losses are estimated to be around 20 - 45 based on various western intelligence sources. Imagine dying for your country, and your country doesn't even recognise you died serving your country.

Henry McMohan a British official was sent to carve out the borders between India and Tibet in the Shimla accord of 1912... Since China has always claimed Tibet as a part of the country, China never accepted that border agreement. So when China invaded Tibet in 1950 they claimed that Arunachal Pradesh( The eastern most state of India ) as a part of Tibet..Which became one of the causes of the 1962 Sino-Indo War and hostility between the two countries which exists till today..

The word was probably imported from Sanskrit, but the fact remains that these people were Malay, and they spoke Malay, and when they named their city singa-pura, they're not thinking of the Sanskrit word. This is like saying that Salt Lake City in Utah is named after the German word for salt, Salz.

Unfortunately China opened up it's economy in the 1980s and made it largely state capitalist promoting big enterprise and international investment and trade. India was still stuck in it's socialist dream and was ironically more leftist in economy than even china as a "mixed economy". The state was a big brother and ease of doing business was dead last in world competitiveness and the quality of Indian goods was abysmal in everything other than traditional produce,cottage industry, and handicrafts. China made great strides in electricity production, manufacturing,infrastructure development while India's democracy and judicial system meant many project were not even conceived to be large enough to cater to it's size but had to eat humble pie of regional interests, politics between regions, ineffective and vacillating central governments that were more concerned with subsidisation and still stuck in colonial modes of thought and behaviour. China's communism in that way although brutal was more conducive to a quantitative increase in prosperity. India has little to be proude of in the 30-40 years following independence and only serves as a services based economy with a strong population base that drives consumption. We are sorely lacking in innovation,research, corporation size, banking prowess, electricity generation, and even political stability as compared to China which itself has a long way to go before it becomes competitive with the US in many core specialities of the US like military, economic partnerships, academics and research and development etc. I hope for India to be more aware of it's own roots and philosophy and place in the world, somehow i feel the colonial mindset still prevails. Government services are seen as passports to a secure future and not as a career path for public minded people. It is rife with corruption and people who go with the aim of enrichment of themselves and their families and for personal vanity. There is little dignity of labour, the professions such as janitors, trades like factory workers, miners, farm workers are still denied basic labour rights and a culture of respect for all professions and work is not present. Even common citizens are often victims of police excesses and political manipulation on the basis of religious identity or skin colour or region of residence in India. These are major hurdles to our progress. Often I find incredible vitriol and hate from Indians among each other, people of northeast may think ill of other regions, people of south or north may discrimnate against each other, people of one region in north will badwouth other north indians. This has to end. We must realise we are all from a great ancient civilisation that is still standing and although surrounded by often expansionist neighbours our existence is dependent on our cooperation and utmost respect for each other as citizens of this great civilisation.
