Just wanted to drop my two cents in about Advent Children specifically, as a person who is both a Final Fantasy VII fan and has seen Advent Children; the main reason that non-FFVII fans didn't understand much of the movie is that it was inherently designed as a sequel. Think FFVII 2 instead of FFVII: The Movie. You normally wouldn't watch FFVII 2 without seeing FFVII 1. (Of course people could, but that's not often the main goal.) Or maybe I'm crazy and seeing movies out of order is normal, I don't know. But I think much of the confusion toward Advent Children from those outside the fandom is simply Nomura not bothering to explain what was already laid out in the original game. Who is this random black-haired guy that shows up and seems to be a big deal? It's not explained fully because Vincent already had his story explained in FFVII, Nomura's not gonna hash it out again in hasty exposition because someone watched AC without seeing the game it was based on. All in all to say, I think if Nomura were handed a movie that was meant to be a stand-alone/jump-off point, it wouldn't be nearly as confusing to outsiders as AC was. I definitely agree with your point about bringing in someone outside! But AC being confusing to outsiders wasn't inherently Nomura's fault. Nor was it the fault of anyone. It just exists in a weird limbo where it's the only movie in a video game franchise yet can't be understood without said games ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The sad but true reality. Sorry if that was rambley, didn't know how better to explain myself lol.

No the answer is no. Executive meddling will always interfere with a writer's vision and when it comes to game adaptations they largely screw up a vast majority of the time
