Could Roland Tembo Actually Have Killed The Tyrannosaurus Rex In The Lost World?

Out of every new character created for the second Jurassic Park film, the one that undoubtedably stands out the most, is Roland Tembo. After being played excellently by Pete Posthlethwaite, this truly enjoyable
anti-hero takes charge of Ludlow's Dinosaur Extraction party, and earns his place as one of the most memorable characters of the franchise. Many fans have actually cited Roland as being one of their favorite characters of
the franchise, and if you've seen the second film, its not really that difficult to understand why. He's just got something about him that feels realistic and honest, and his no bull shit attitude compliments these traits
in an entry that easily places itself as the darkest movie in the series. Roland offers something to the audience that Alan Grant and Ian Malcolm quite simply never could and his role in The Lost World is
deservedely so appreciated by many who like or even dislike that film. Now the man's highest accomplishment in said film, was the tranquilizing of the Bull Tyrannosaur that attacked the Hunter's Camp
towards the end of the second act in that movie. He of course was forced to do this after Nick Van Owen pulled the bullets out of his Rifle and emptied the shells. Many have often wondered what would have
happened in that scene, if Van Owen hadn't gotten to the Kenyan's gun earlier. And if Roland's cartridges had not been tampered with, could he actually have taken down a T-rex, like he'd
planned?
This is a video on The Lost World Jurassic Park Roland or as he's more famously known, The Lost World Roland Tembo played excellently by Pete Postlethwaite you know! With the Jurassic Park 2 T-rex getting followed by Roland Tembo in this movie, we get a lot of great The Lost World Quotes and a The Lost World Theory or two. Its funny to see stuff like Jurassic World 2 Lost World or even the weird The Lost World Jurassic World 2 and this video will give you some Tyrannosaur Facts to think on about the Tyrannosaurus itself. The Jurassic Park 2 T-rex told me that if I type out fragmented sentences in the description like this that I'll rank higher so Jurassic World Park Theory is what I will make a video on. Also Jurassic Park Nostalgia is high for me and The Lost World T-rex is in a cool scene or two with The Lost World Pete Postlethwaite so thats neat. You know The Lost World Tyrannosaur is also a great tag! :D

As much as we know Roland's story was effectively concluded in The Lost World, part of me believes that he would have been a valuable ally for Grant and the others in Jurassic Park III, as the only one with any real experience of Isla Sorna and who would have been a more qualified man for hire than the two mercs who get killed when they land on the island. Imagine if you will the dialogue between him and Grant and their opposing yet similarly world-weary philosophies.

I think if Roland was given the opportunity to be hired to lead the JP3 team he would have declined it consider how disastrous the outcome was when he was part of the expedition in TLW. I dont think he would have wanted anything to do with it. I agree with you that, in theory, he would have been valuable to them and would have made great opposition as well as addition to Grant as far as that situation goes.

Roland's really relateable for people that hunt or are interested in hunting. Shooting a T-Rex? With the right gun and ammo any hunter would love the chance for a Rex skull or mount in the living/trophy room. I echo stonedgandalf on that point. What I didn’t hear mentioned was the specs of the Winchester Model 70 carried by Ajay, which I’d presume was in 375 H&H Magnum. Many elephants have fallen to single shots from bullets of even .276 caliber (read about “Karamojo” Bell), as well as to 30-06, in addition the the formidable .375. Assuming I’m right on the Model 70, it perhaps could have even been enough to reach into the boiler room on a T Rex if called on by skilled hands.

If things all went according to his plan, such as luring the Rexes to him with the infant, he probably could have killed both of them. Hell he could of probably killed the Spinosaurus from JP3, maybe even the I-Rex. It’s interesting to see how many fans this one character has. He’s not the main focus of the film, but many people, including people who don’t like the film, seem to like his character. Probably due to the fact he was played by a well respected actor, he carries a code of honour, he takes down a T-Rex single handedly. Though he did seem a little disrespectful towards Eddie’s death, which seemed a little out of character to me.

I don't think he was disrespectful towards Eddie's death I think he was just being a realist, he needed to get the group moving and off the island, they can mourn once they've made it to safety. I think Roland is one of the best characters in the movie - excellently played by Postlethwaite. I have always found his last line interesting: 'No thank you... I believe I've spent enough time in the company of death.' - this is in response to an offer from Ludlow of a job at the San Diego attraction. It is a foreshadowing of what was to happen in the final act of the movie.

I'm really glad you appreciate the filmmaking in the scene of Tembo loading the tranq darts. It's so wonderfully done and something I noticed on a recent rewatch is that it's all one single take from him loading them into the rifle to him getting in position to shoot. Spielberg is the king of non-flashy oners, and that scene is a prime example of why having them be non-flashy is so important. It keeps you immersed in the pressing intensity of the moment, instead of cutting around in a panic, but rather savoring all of the little details that are being navigated with ease. On top of the loading, the fact that the camera pans in such a way as to almost _casually_ reveal the bull Rex gives it such presence, knowing he was just some 30 feet away, the shock of which permeated by that gut-wrenching bellow the Rex lets out. Then to top it all off, the ambiguity of Roland's fate as the Rex responds to his shot, until the result is shown later on. Hands-down one of my favorite moments in the franchise.

With all my friends who like Roland, what made us most drawn to him is that he is a fleshed out character of Muldoon. We barely got to appreciate Muldoon in the original and he was killed before he really had a chance to fight. So, finally being able to see the rugged human hunter in action against the Rex was great. You also have to wonder if Tembo and Robert knew one another. Both of them being big game hunters and conservationists in the same region. Too bad he doesn't get the chance for some Raptor vengeance for Ajay and Robert.

Both Tyrannosaurus Rexes are attacking the human's camp, scattering the hunters left and right. Many of them fire off shots in panic, but don't affect the animals at all. While the other men are running away, Roland runs towards the female T-Rex with his .600 Double Rifle. Its a perfect hunting position with the female Rex turned sideways, just like a typical deer hunt. _"Bloody Rex, take what's coming to you."_ He takes aim at her brain and... *BANG!!!* The beast utters an agonizing shriek and drops to the ground. The male T-Rex glances at his fallen mate and then turns his attention towards the man who fired off the very loud gunshot. He gives off a mighty roar and starts charging towards the lone hunter. Standing his ground, Roland raises his rifle at the male Rex's head, but does not shoot right away. Back in Africa, Roland often let hippos and elephants rush at him, waiting for the moment that his rifle's sights are perfectly aligned with their brain before shooting. This is what Double Rifles were built for, stopping animal charges at very close ranges with one well placed shot. The second bullet is usually only for insurance, but in this case he has only one cartridge left. Roland pictures in his mind the head of a Tyrannosaurus in a frontal position, and imagines where the brain would be. If he misses by even an inch, he's done for. With the male Rex mere yards away from Roland, he takes aims between the ridges of the T-Rex's eyes and squeezes the trigger... *BANG!!!* The male T-Rex roars in pain and swivels to the side. His body is now sliding towards Roland, and the man is in danger of being crushed under 7 tons of dinosaur mass. At the last second Roland leaps away and hits the ground with a hard thud. After a few seconds the Rex's body has come to a halt, and Roland regains his feet. He stares in utter disbelief at the carcass and thinks to himself what he just did: _kill two prehistoric Tyrannosaurus Rexes._ All the other professional hunters never even had the opportunity of accomplishing such a task. *_"I've just bagged the most dangerous game to ever walk the face of the bloody earth!"_* After admiring his kills for a while, Roland radios his partner Ajay and hours later they have managed to reunite all the scattered survivors, including Ian Malcom and his group. They wisely avoid the long grass that houses the Velociraptors, and made their way towards the abandoned InGen site. The hunters radio for evac, and many of them return safely to the mainland, but Roland and Ajay stay along with several men and helicopters to return to the campsite and retrieve the trophies. Two years later Roland is sitting on a comfy chair inside his spacious house, with the two taxidermied T-Rex heads mounted on the wall...

While dinosaur bones are thick, they are also hollow. I'm not sure how they would hold up to big game cartridges, but if they can peirce 10mm of steel or an elephant's skull, its safe to say it would be potent. Hell, even something in 7.62 (like the AKM you mentioned) would easily pierce through the underbelly of the Rex and ventilate its internal organs. It's important to note that dinosaurs were just animals, and if it bleeds, you can kill it. That's not to say it would be an easy kill or anything, by the way. You would have to be crazy brave to stand up to such a predator.

Dude I'm so glad you did this video and the attention to detail is awesome. An interesting note about the rifle used by Tembo is it is actually 1 of 2 rifles that are built exactly alike consecutive serial numbers as well. They are Searcy rifles but an interesting side bit I'm proud is the fact that Searcy sent both rifles to have action and be barreled by Kirk Merrington in Kerrville Texas(my home town). I actually worked for Kirk a few years ago and apparently one rifle was Pete's and the other was for Spielberg. Each rifle had a ridiculously hefty price tag as well . Each running a quarter million. I don't even want to guess what the pair would cost. Being consecutive serial numbers and exact copies of each other (the majority of double rifles are one of a kind because they are ordered ala carte). Just thought it would be something fun to share.

All I want in return for my services is the right to hunt one of the tyrannosaurs. A male, a buck only. How and when is my business. Now if you don't like either of those conditions, you're on your own. So go ahead, set up base camp right here, or in a swamp, or in the middle of a Rex nest for all I care. But I've been on too many safaris with rich dentists to listen to any more suicidal ideas, OK?"

His intro scene where he combats that drunk with a single punch even while it was cut just gives insight to Roland's character. Yeah he is a poacher, but he has honor. After this scene I always hated in JP 3 when Cooper has his "Iron Horn 20mm" a made-up gun name but not a made-up round, his rifle is actually a Barrett M82 .50cal. we hear him fire several shots at the Spino, which if the gun really was a 20mm would have blown the Spino apart in one shot, if not crippling it completely easily dispatchable after. In reality the Barrett .50cal would have taken the Spino out just as easily... That scene always bothered me so bad especially when they showed how destructive the 20mm round is right before they got to the island... In Fallen Kingdom I really want to see some dinosaurs get shot and killed. That may sound bad but ever since JP when Dr. Grant and Robert Muldoon couldn't kill the Raptors with a SPAS -12, which would have easily dispatched them, then The Lost World, JP3, and Jurassic World just pisses me off all together to top it off. I hate how incompetent Firearms are shown to be towards the dinosaurs especially when they're using such firearms that would easily drop these animals, like Owen's Marlin 45-70, the M134 Minigun and the AT4 rocket launcher against the Indominus Rex, if it would have gotten a direct hit from the latter 2 they would have easily dispatched the animal. But the vital shots alone that Owen was getting with his Marlin the Indominus probably would have succumbed to its wounds eventually. I was so excited for Jurassic World when they actually had good weapons against the dinosaurs I was hoping they would be used right and portrayed correctly but I was proved wrong once again that's why I'm hoping Fallen Kingdom will actually show some human and dinosaur combat with some dinosaurs getting shot down.
@KlaytonFioriti

I have a feeling that it actually will, and you're right man I totally agree with your statements. I think that after a certain point in time, they really need to do the "Aliens" thing with JP because its just been put off for far too long. I think the creators may be a bit antsy to do this because they don't want to have a conflicting message with the unecessary replication of dino DNA but still, they have GOT to show some guys actually killing some of the dinosaurs. It was making sense up until JP3 when they just threw all logic out the window and started creating excuses. Jurassic World I feel "tried" to do something with the Dimorphodon getting shot out of the helicopter and the raptor being blown up, but after a certain point I think people want to see some guys light the raptors up and win a small victory. They don't even have to survive the whole movie lol, they could show anything happening after that and it may build the suspense, so yeah like I said I totally agree with you.

It's a whole anti gun agenda on the part of the filmmakers, honestly. Some of it's to build these animals up as the ultimate threat but I have to believe some of it is a conscious desire to show how "useless" guns are. If that's there take fine I can live with that whether I agree with it or not but there are better ways to show guns being useless. Aliens is a wonderful example of guns being shown as killing dangerous predators but the protagonists still taking heavy casualties.

@Klayton Fioriti I love to watch these videos you make, going so much into detail. However there are a few things that this video doesn't take into consideration, so I would like to comment on them. I think the task of killing the Rex is described a bit too easily in the video, and I would like to point out a few things that in reality would make it more complicated. 1) Considering that the skull of the T-Rex is bigger and more massively built than an African elephant, and that the brain of the T-Rex is also smaller than the elephant, it would be harder to knock the animal out. The closest thing we have to compare it with in the franchise is the shots Cooper fired at the Spinosaurus in JP3. The weapon and ammo can be estimated of having approximately the same firepower as Roland's rifle, yet was unable to knock out the longer, yet more slenderly built Spinosaurus. It only managed to piss it off. 2) The T-Rex bite force is the most powerful ever found in the terrestrial animal kingdom with a maximum bite force of over 12,000 psi (it's over 9,000!!!). Fossil remains of T-Rex skulls indicate that these animals would often fight amongst each other, with several bitemarks and scars on the skulls to prove it. However the scars and bitemarks also indicate a healing process, meaning that the animals would survive these violent attacks. The scars on the head of the male T-Rex also indicate this type of behaviour. Thus the T-Rex skull would be far more likely to withstand the trauma of the bullet than what you have indicated. Which makes me question whether or not two bullets would be enough to knock out an angry T-Rex charging at Roland. 3) The T-Rex immune system. It is believed that the T-Rex, much like the current Komodo dragon, had a very infectious bite. As most of its prey would die from the terrible infections from its bite, T-Rexes could survive attacks and bites from other T-Rexes. Which would require a powerful immune system. Combined with studies that indicate that dinosaurs in general were able to survive types of wounds, lacerations etc. that would kill a mammal of the same size, a T-Rex would be more capable of not only surviving the head injuries from a bullet than a mammal of the same size, but also remain conscious. If Roland were to kill the T-Rex, he would have to shoot it through its eye socket to have the best chance of killing the animal. That way he would avoid bone tissue and be more likely to bring it down. But try doing that on a moving and charging Tyrannosaurus..

Nice video. I do have to (partially) disagree about the back up ammo. The majority would indeed have been with his rifle bearer, along with his back up rifle (which likely would have been a 458 win mag or something similar in itself... o r at least a 375 H&H Magnum. Not ideal for T-Rex, but far more potent than the pipsqueak 7.62x39 in an AK). That said, in all my own years of hunting, research and reading accounts of hunters, I've never met a single instance of a hunter that didn't keep a reload on his person, with singles or doubles. In fact, much like shotgunners, often the hunter would have a spare cartridge or two between the fingers of the support hand to facilitate a fast reload. Only a very foolish, and therefore, likely very dead, dangerous game hunter would keep all of his ammo inaccessible in a pack. The excess? yes. So whether it was another Hollywood mistake or a dramatic tension storytelling decision (I never took Spielberg for being a huge gun guy, despite his love of war movies), speaking as a hunter, that bothered me in the film. Regardless, good video in all, and a good movie if one ignores Spielberg's homage/ripoff King King ending. (And Pete Postlewaite is one of my all time favorite actors)

As I've said elsewhere. Roland was asleep when the T Rex showed up and the camp erupted into chaos. It's entirely possible that what was on his person was either: A. laying next to his rifle and lost in the dark and chaos of the camp B. fell out of his clothing when he jumped up from sleep and grabbed his rifle C. taken and disposed of by Nick when he sabotaged Roland's loaded rounds. There are lots of good reasons why he might not have those extra two rounds on him.

The beginning of the first film, the raptor they were trying to put through the gate was killed off-screen (presumably with rifles) after the tasers did nothing, and it would have just gotten loose otherwise. Muldoon nearly shot one but his aim was thrown off before he fired. The guns we see used in the second and third films were utterly useless, except for the tranquilizers. The I-rex, with it's large size and cuttlefish armor, would be especially hard to faze with traditional hunting weapons, but we actually get to see it flinch numerous times while being shot at and tazed, which ended up making it seem more realistic than the second film where the T-rex takes multiple shots and acts like it was nothing. On top of that, the second film seems to be the only one where we even see a gun that could theoretically take down a dinosaur, and even still we never got to see it in action.

Y'know Pete Postlethwaite was also in Dragonheart. Makes me wish Roland flew to Isla Sorna on Draco. #ConneryDragon. :P

Two guys both with 900 nitros kill both rexes easily if they're skilled. Roland alone though with just the 600? He gets to be lunch. My opinion...

No such thing as a .900 Nitro.

I think the 600 could anchor the rex with proper placement... Or at least concussed it sufficiently to drop it if not kill it outright. And yes the ammo is heavy but I don't know of a DG hunter that wouldn't at least have 2 more or 4 more rounds on his person. Also look at Ajay's rifle... The dual recoil lugs (bolt heads in front of the mag well on the stock) indicate that is an M70 Safari Express, of which I think (don't quote me) 375 h&h is the smallest caliber... Which is enough for everything currently on the planet. I think they were adequately heeled to kill a T- Rex.

I wouldn't wanna be the guy to find out and, be wrong. I'd rather be ABSOLUTELY positive first. 😁

doubt it, it's a effort to take down a elephant and rhino down with one shot going to be much harder on a tyrannosaurus especially when it notices you
