The International Red Cross says some 10,000 people are missing in Libya after Mediterranean storm Daniel caused catastrophic flooding. The floods swept away entire neighborhoods in a number of coastal towns. The destruction was worst in the eastern coastal city of Derna, where the heavy rains caused two dams to collapse, wiping out one quarter of the city.

Since I am Libyan, I strongly disagree with Mr. Anas, and he must verify his sources. He is not even in Libya. I am here and I can confirm that all cities in Libya stand in solidarity with the affected areas, and all political differences have been put aside for the time being , I have never seen solidarity like this before in the country, I mean, did you know, Anas? The aid convoys from yesterday have been continuing to reach the site, some of them coming from a distance of 2,000 kilometers and every city in Libya has sent Donations of vehicles, trucks, and ambulances in the hundreds, food, medical supplies, clothes, etc.... Citizens organize donation campaigns in every street, At the end of the day, with a simple search you can find out what is happening anywhere in the world and know the truth.

Sure, everybody is startled. But how will it be next week, in a month, a year? The fact is that you are more consentrated on fighting each other than together building a nation to be proud of. If nothing happens, then this will not be for long and you will face further disasters in the future. Because he is right about one thing and that is that this could have been avoided if the country had been governed in a normal manner.

Also; no mention by western media WHY there are divided political factions. No mention from German news concerning NATO bombing Libya back to the stone age. No mention of destroying a once united country. Sure Gaddafi was a "bad guy" whatever, that's not the point. He wasn't the West's "bad guy" so, had to be taken out.

This makes sense now how this story seemed to come out of nowhere with an initial estimate of 2000 dead. It was because 2 dams collapsed that this kickstarted so quickly.

Yes, what do you think would cause concrete dams to break? Seismic activity! The entire African tectonic plate is rotating clockwise! What do you think caused the earthquake in Morocco? What do you think caused the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria? What do you think caused the wildfires in Turkey, Greece, Algeria and Tenerife? What do you think caused the container ships to get stuck in the Suez canal? What do you think caused the Johannesburg underground explosions? These areas are all located at the boundaries of the African tectonic plate that is literally moving and rolling clockwise and causing great havoc as it does

Western interference ensured the fall of Libya. The West through those action and the same taken against nations all around the world is the reason the west has lost all credibility the world over. I live in Canada and abhor the Western way of life. Greed and divisiveness is the Order of the day among the Elites here in the west and they do nothing in this world that doesn't take from others to enrich themselves. The collapse of the western sphere into complete ruin is the best thing that could happen to the entire planet! It would be nice to see the nations of Africa rise and come together to be what the west should have been ... the powers that enrich the whole of the world, not just themselves. Africa, your Libyan brothers and sisters need you in this time of turmoil and loss. Stand together and win the hearts and minds of the World! Much Love for Africa!

Who is ultimately to blame? The US and NATO for destroying what used to be the richest and most developed country in Africa. Ever since toppling Gaddafi (one of the best leaders Africa ever had) and destroying his country, Libya has become a failed state not unlike Somalia, Afghanistan and other places the West destroyed. Did you know under Gaddafi's rule, Libya had free housing, free education, free healthcare, all paid for by oil & gas sales? Libya built Africa's most extensive irrigation systems, and invested heavily in modern infrastructure. It is destroyed now. Do you know how much the West is hated? If Gaddafi had still been in power, there wouldn't be 5,000+ dead from a flood.

My solidarity with the people of Libya. The 2 dams had already been inspected and alerts were issued by engineers, to reinforce the defenses of cities that could be hit by a flood. The country is politically and militarily divided with 2 independent administrations. On Saturday there was the earthquake in Morocco and there was also Storm Daniel in the Mediterranean Sea. I think these 2 natural phenomena affected the infrastructure of the 2 dams, leading them to total collapse. The number of deaths, the authorities already speak of more than 10 thousand people.

Egypts most wanted terroist was caught there during that seige and putgeThe looks on the peoples faces and the saddness in the air was completely diffeent from the sounding cities and towns where everone waves at you and smiles. Yes of course the tragedy could be avoided, imagined in Philippines 20 typhoons every year battered the country, well for some filipinos its just an ordinary catastrophe every year. Libya/ Libyan should invest an irrigations or canals to Mediterranean sea or to South Libya as the country itself is flat just incase for heavey torrential rains.

I was spent my childhood in Binghazi, Libya 1972 to 1980. Libya is the fastest growing economy in Western Africa in 70's. What a beautiful scenery of Derna, Susa, Bayda and Shahhat, I remember everything. Susa stands by the ruins of Apollonia, Cyrenaica and Shahhat is a town in the District of Jabal al Akhdar in north-eastern Libya. Cyrene was located in the same area in ancient times. It is located 24 kilometres east of Bayda. I'm so sad to watching this video

As explained in the video 2 dams colapsed. This is an infrastructure and institutions issue not a flood issue per say. Also, there was a river in what is today lybia, it wasn't as dry as is now. With the right investment these floods would be an advantage and not the tragedy seen.
