Short answer. The Mahabharat War couldn't be avoided. The entire Epic was foretold and prewritten by Vishnu and Brahma. There were two main reasons for it:- 1) To make sure most of the knowledge of Celestial Weapons gets destroyed before Kali Yuga. Otherwise it would have been more disastrous. 2) Because of the Asuras reincarnating as Humans in Dwapar Yuga, the Spiritual burden Mother Earth was facing was immense. Which is why Vishnu jad promised her that a great War would happen which would cleanse the World of all the evil Humans (who are reincarnated Asuras). Brahma too would ask other Gods to incarnate as Humans to aid Vishnu on this which is why so many Gods would incarnate as Humans (Like Sage Nar being Arjuna, Surya incarcerating as Karna, Vasu incarnating as Bhishma, Brihaspati incarnating as Drona, Varchas incarnating as Abhimanyu, Rudra incarnating as Ashwatthama). So the war and destruction would have happened either way.

Let's suppose for a moment that Mahabharata was a true event. It is true that it could not be avoided by human interventions, but it could surely be avoided by divine interventions. Because divine intervention is, after all, divine intervention. But according to whatever information we have from here and there, very unfortunately, lord Krishna even seems to be setting the events of war. And that is something which undermines the very credibility of Mahabharata itself.
