I used to live in nearby Barrowby over 20 years ago and it's brilliant to see the canal being more actively restored than it was then. The Vale Of Belvoir has a lot of great villages, pubs and moorings.. just the link to the Trent ... and money... to overcome.

We often walk our dog along sections of the Grantham Canal, and I’ve cycled on the towpath all the way from the Trent to Grantham. There are sections where it’s completely dry and there are trees growing in the bed of the canal, much of it still has water and the towpath is mostly well kept - there are a few grassy sections that can be muddy in winter. It’s a great local resource and it would be great to see it completely back in use, but I don’t think I’ll see it any time soon.

Excellent video Robbie. I was very glad to learn that they’re restoring more canals. It’s also interesting to consider that back in the Industrial Revolution canals were vital for the growth of industry and the economy. Working families were squeezed into a small cabin hardly big enough to turn around.

I moved to the area in 1983 and joined the Grantham Canal Society, keen to see the canal restored. Unfortunately, over the years there seemed to be more politics than restoration although over the past few years there has been a new push. The link to the Trent would cement the restoration especially if it was to join at Gamston Lock. This is probably the last thing to happen because it will be the most expensive but it would help funding as boats would actually turn onto the canal. Having said all that, it is a beautiful canal to walk and that is something I do regularly.

Interesting. I didn't know about The Grantham Canal. The Trent does look a bit rapid! You could always while away the hours in the time warp clubhouse at Beeston! I don''t think it's been decorated since the early 70's haha. I am still on The Macc. Hurry up!

I used to force my bike through the undergrowth and mud on the towpath back in the 60s. At that time the canal was a hopeless case, dead and gone forever. Wonderful to see the towpath restored and in use. Will be even better when it is navigable again.

Lovely video, first one of yours that I have seen, will look for more. I agree with your comment about the Nicholson Guide Books about their comments. I live in the village of Fleckney, near the Saddington Tunnel on the Leicester Arm of the Grand Union. The first Nicholson Guide Books said for Fleckney - "Grim industrial village, curiously placed amongst fields. No obvious reason for its existence, handy for supplies and fish & chips". I wonder if that has changed in later editions.

I live within walking distance from our own Trent Canal, here in Ontario, Canada. Of course, unless it has been an unusually mild winter, it is still pretty much solid ice well into March and it is really more of a collection of lakes and rivers connected by short-ish sections of canals and locks. It was originally planned as a means of thwarting the feared depredations of the "evil empire" south of our border (this was the 1800's, after all... War of 1812... etc.) by providing an alternate and reasonably rapid transportation link to the Upper Great Lakes. Of course, by the time it was (largely) completed, its strategic purpose was obsolete... so... rather like in the U.K., it was repurposed for tourism/leisure purposes. Ironically, it is quite popular with American boaters! I gather, one can (with A LOT of free time on one's hands...) boat from Lake Superior all the way to the Gulf of Mexico through the various interconnecting canals, lakes, and rivers... just not with a narrowboat... Great to learn about the many canal restorations afoot.

Really interesting Robbie. I was a Student at Nottingham in the 1980's, I lived close to the Nottingham end of the Grantham Canal. I spent a lot of time running alongside the disused Canal. It is very scenic and would be a great addition to the existing Network in that area. This issue of the road going over the Canal. This is the big issue for a lot of proposed restoration projects such as the Montgomery Canal and also the upper reaches of the Lancaster Canal to Kendal which you went to have a brief look at yourself Robbie as I recall. The Lancaster upper reaches restoration would involve going under the M6 at least a couple of times unless the route is diverted. What is involved in going under a major road like this? Is it a case of 2 or 3 big locks down, an underpass below the road then 2 or 3 locks up again? How much does it cost approximately to go under a major road like this and how co-operative will the highways agencies be with such projects? Mike
@RobbieCumming
@RobbieCumming 5 жыл бұрын
I’ve no idea Mike - I did ask how much funding was needed overall but did not get an answer I’m afraid. Love that you remember that video on the Lancaster, I must try to get my boat up there this year if possible.
@mikerobson1786
@mikerobson1786 5 жыл бұрын
@@RobbieCumming Robbie, I recall hearing that the Lancaster restoration up to Kendal was estimated at £24M back in c2008. Inflation and likely under estimation would probably take that to £50M today. A lot of cash, but the route is c20 miles and does require a lot of roads to be under passed. The section in Kendal itself has been filled in, but remains as a walkway with the original canal bridges still there in places over the filled in canal. Digging out would be quite easy, it is the road crossing sections that would be more costly and challenging. If you go to the canal route in Kendal you get a real feel for how awesome the return of the canal to Kendal would actually be. I remember a lot of your vids. I think my favourite was the crankathon with Phil North of York. The scenery, the sand martins on the banks slow motions, the very witty double act with Phil. Phil steering sometimes allowed you to take some great creative footage

The difference is city centres are the responsibility of local councils, hence nothing ever gets done, or when it does it's an expensive failure. Canals, by and large, are restored by volunteers who often form trusts and may work for years to raise funds and restore small sections at a time. Because these projects are undertaken by passionate members of the public not paid bureaucrats there is no limit to what they can achieve...Never underestimate the abilities of the ordinary British man to get something done!
