Could You Be a Godparent in the Catholic Church?

This is so important. My own godfather played a major role in my return to the faith. I believe that God gives God parents special graces to reach people who have fallen away.

I am the godmother to both of my nephews, I find it to be such a wonderfully awesome connection between us. It is my duty to be a solid role model of the faith, along with their parents, as well as to get them to heaven. I pray for them daily.

Thank you, Fr. David. Over 25 years ago a neighbor asked us if we would be godparents for their infant son. We told them we were touched and would be honored. Their response: "It's no big deal, it's just symbolic". What?! I really wish I had chosen different godparents for our two sons. A few years after our sons were baptized none of the godparents practice their faith. Being a godparent is a very serious role in a child's faith journey.

I thought you become a godparent so that you can get someone wacked...or that is at least what I learned from The Godfather. 😉 In all seriousness, people don't take being a godparent, or choosing a godparent for their baby, seriously enough. Thank you, Father David, for this message.
