FINALLY! An axe review video with someone actually using the axe for what it was intended to be used for! Great video Eugene! Thanks!

Strip the lacquer of the handle and you won’t get blisters and it won’t be slippery.

The first thing that I did to my new CT Dayton was to refinish the handle with six coats of Linsheen. Then, I will sharpen it up. I still have to make a sheath for it. Mine says 23 on it, so it was made last year.

I have not dropped a tree with an axe in about 30 years. I cut them down with one of my chainsaws. I got the CT Dayton, so I had felling axe in my stable.

I am going to make a sheath for my new CT Dayton pattern axe, probably out of 8-10 ounce leather. I hate sewing that thick stuff but it makes a good sheath.

What do you think about this ace as a firefighter axe?

Nice review, I enjoyed it! A shorter handle would improve your accuracy and the edge looks to have something incorrect (missalignment maybe?) between 3:20 and 3:30. It's something nobody does but to give proper information about the axe you lack to give the bit angle, head weigh and handle length will tell you about the power of the axe but the bit angle dictates which jobs is that axe built for.

I might get this one & strip the red coat then put a coat of gun blue. About the steel, I'm guessing some kind of mid carbon steel.

Eugene, do you know anyone who can build custom axe handles. I want to get my father one for fathers day, for his grandfathers hatchet. I figured since all four of our initials are the same, get our inititials branded into the handle.

I don't know for sure, but I know that Tennessee Hickory Products sells good handles, and a large variety of them. They might be able to make a custom one for you. www.tennesseehickoryproducts.com/

Looks like a nice tool, but unfortunately, I don't have a need for a full sized felling axe...

Good video but your axe swinging technique is improper, you are wasting more energy and not getting enough power

The ax is a bit too big for what you're using it for. For trees under 12" in diameter, a 2 1/2 pound head ax with a 28" or shorter handle is ideal, especially for beginners to develop accuracy.
