The 1.6 part was way too short. This is probably the most influential game of all time regarding tactical shooters. 1.5 was weird, but 1.6 literally changed the gaming world with all its mechanics and stuff. As an early 90s kid, this is THE game for me. I'm pretty sure there are tons of people out there, who feel the same. The rest that you covered was great though!

I thought he was going to run through more betas but I guess there's just no good way to compare without playing matches, like 1.4 or so when mp5 got a huge damage boost, less recoil and was basically the best gun in the game. We were playing HL when my buddy found an alpha version of CS, and introduced me to "mods", and that was basically all I played for the next 15+ years. awp_map, bunny hopping on scoutzknives. Maybe some of those are still around, but I never really moved on from 1.6. The shield still feels wrong to me. Might be time to get back into it though.

I agree. You didn't touch on any of the community aspect. We had mIRC, CALeague, and much more too. It wasn't about getting into random matches. You had clans starting up and when you practiced, it was finding another PUG or clan to play against. CS 1.6 was the biggest and brightest star. When CS:S released, a lot of us didn't play it. Most people stuck to 1.6 until CSGO came out.

Not trying to be mean or anything, but for those of us who are in our 30’s now, it’s a little unrealistic to expect any decent coverage of anything 1.5/1.6 related coming from a Zoomer youtuber, especially in a sub-10 minute video. I agree that they were INCREDIBLY important versions, and 1.6 is still played by a good amount of people, but with the shiny and new convenience of CS2, it’s kind of asking a lot for someone this guy’s age to go back and cover anything before 1.6 in vast detail. Hope he does though, there’s a rich amount of info to be found and understood that shaped the way everything works now

We didn't rely on a MM system or get matched up in random games. It was spamming in MiRC to get pick up games with people who around your CAL skill. Those were the days!

Shields were so meta in pistol round that they were actually banned in competitive play. So yeah they were booty, when you had a team crab walking in a line behind it and you cant shoot anyone at all while they hug a wall.

From 1.0 straight to 1.6? That´s like "yes, we invented the wheel, now you can see cars". There was SO MUCH! inbetween 1.0 and 1.3 alone (m4 with zoom, ALWAYS beeing able to bunny hop (was changed with 1.4), no crouch delay). Good old days in here. But yes, 1.6 release was like what CS2 is to CSGO today. Even though it really WAS an usptep in every direction from the get go.

@@Bullshlaha ha the significant damage fluctuations between versions for the TMP, MP5, and others... and I think there was a version where movement had zero affect on the scout's no-scope accuracy. I guess it's hard to spend much time on that stuff in a video without seeing it in action, but at the time it was hilarious. Miss those days. No skins, no battle passes (thankfully CS still doesn't), just servers with DOH

Night vision exists because dark colours on CRT monitors tended to be very dark. CS was something we played in LAN cafes; nobody was messing with their screen. (And I'd say it was still only occasionally useful on one part of one map, but there was usually a buttload of the most random unofficial maps installed at every place you went so I'm sure it got some play.)

The shield in 1.6 is incredibly strong for it's price. The trick is that you dont need to press the right mouse button, you can just turn your side to the enemy and then keep shooting. Almost every server in 1.6 has the shield disabled completely.

I started with 1.5 which i identify as "original CS", Steam wasn't popular to begin with it had issues, it even bricked my PC at the time, so players who didn't want to use it or wanted to avoid the anger inducing riot shield kept playing 1.5 until they shut down the WON servers in 2004, we moved to 1.6 begrudgingly, people were even making mods to turn 1.6 into 1.5.

In 0.4 the m4 had a zoom :) In 1.0 the drastically increased head hitbox. 1.3 killed bunnyhopping pretty much. And took awp crosshair away. 1.0 was when it stopped being a mod. Steam was actually a server client version sync tool. Crazy times. Estate was an amazing map. As was oilrig and siegie with apc :D

0.4 was the best version. Subsequent player animation made it difficult to tell if enough bullets had been used to get a kill. The netcode tweaks in 0.7 messed things up. Took a while to adjust to the new feel of the game.

cs1.6 had nvgs for maps like cs_747. in that map, it was straight up pitch black outside of the plane and in the terminals. a lot of the pitch black night maps didn't make it to later versions of cs because they were all hostage maps.

The 1.X retail release was also really interesting too, that one was the OG counter-strike before 1.6, Those are indeed very weird! Some cut weapons or weird versions of the ones we have today. i get what you're saying but that would be awful in my opinion, the reason CS is so special is because teams can come up with novel ways of playing the maps in the current rotation. if there was a new map every single year it would ruin that whole dynamic

@@zacharyclarke4240 changes to rotation and new maps freshen up gameplay and can give players a fresh slate to come up with interesting strats. it also freshens up viewership so it isnt just the same maps every time every year, and sometimes new maps leads to new ideas that can form when going back to similarly designed previous maps. csgo has had active duty map rotations with reworked old maps added in, like vertigo. this isnt a new thing for cs honestly, its just slowed down considerably in the last few years when they started rebuilding cs on source 2. earlier days of csgo we saw constant changes to maps either through redesigns, layout changes, entire map removals and old map redesigns with reintroductions. this is a constant cycle with cs and hammer 2 will only improve the map making process.

I was hoping that you would mention the Dynamic Weapon Pricing (aka Weapon Market) feature of CS:Source but alas. If you don't know, Weapons Market was a feature that allowed the community to change the prices of guns and equipment every week. The price would change depending on how used the gun was. For example, if 10% of all in-game money was spent on the M4, then the price of the M4 would rise by 10% next week). While this system sounds pretty cool, it was extremely busted. Popular weapons like AWP, AK, M4 and Deagle became so expensive than it wasn't worth buying them. Deagle at one point had a price of about 5000-6000$. And some lesser used weapons like MAC 10 became super cheap so you could afford an SMG or a shotgun on a pistol round. Weapons like Glock, USP and M249 cost literally 1$ which allowed players to spam them and crash servers. Eventually this option was removed because most servers turned it off and majority of the community were really against this feature (for good reason). I'm pretty sure you can still find the website where you could see the prices with Wayback Machine

As an old man that definitely played CS beta 7 in the late 90's, this was nostalgic AF to watch. I do remember de_dust existing way back then, not sure why your 1.0 release didn't have any defuse maps - I might be misremembering when de_ maps were introduced. There was a glitch called "skywalking" where you could boost through the invisible ceiling of de_dust and run around on top of the map. Bunnyhopping was also unrestricted and people that mastered it would fly around the map like lunatics. So much fun was had by teenage me back then. Great vid!

4:05 Well to answer that for you. In my experience, it had a purpose. Because back then, I had a monitor where its display wasn’t that bright that when I go in darker places on CS like the Tunnel on Dust2, I can’t see anything. So I had to save up more money to buy every time the Night Vision goggles so I can go in without being blind.

CS 1.6 was what I played first as a kid. And I also enjoyed listening to the music of "Chaves", as it is called here, together with CS, they are part of the history of Brazil.
