I've been here 20+ years and you're only talking about the last 10 years? Have you forgotten that the CPL ever existed before the majors? Sweden won most of them with Heaton as the star player.

Sweden owned CS 1.0-1.6 There was a stat that showed the countries of the winning teams across all major tournaments. Out of all potential 485 medals at 1.6 majors, sweden won 157, out of which 52 where gold medals. Second place in medals is USA with 53 total.. Poland had 50 medals, but since they had the NEO, Taz, kuben, loord stack they won 30 golds. Sweden where close to 1.6 what South Korea was to brood war.

Sweden has maintained a leading position in cs esports since 2001. However, there's been a noticeable shift as the newer generation in Sweden has begun to engage with different games. This change is why fewer young people are playing Counter-Strike (CS) in the country now. We were even more dominating in CS 1.5 and CS 1.6 then CSGO/CS2.

Not even sweden, almost every top 10 team is not from a single country. Back in 2013-2019 the best teams were from one country or region like CIS. International teams were the outliers, now it’s the international teams being normal and one country/region teams being the outlier.

Except NiP and Fnatic there were no more established Swedish teams at the time - The young talents had no place to go except waiting for a spot in NiP or Fnatic (Thats why they had such a huge player rotation, Maikelele, pyth, draken, dennis, golden, lekr0, twist, ztr, LNZ, nawwk etc etc. And everyone joining the old squad that already had lost the drive. If there was more organisations the young talents could have joined a new team and actually be a 5 stack of young players (As it was in 1.6) but now they had to fight for the spot with 3/4 players that already were basically done with CS (NiP with f0rest, gt, friberg and Fnatic with JW, Flusha, Krimz, Pronax etc). Today its better with academy teams, but its still the same issue except international teams take the talent players from these academy teams which obvously breaks the whole team dynamic and you need to reset. And now you had for example Johny Speeds that actually were a good Swedish team but without sponsors they lost players who went to international rosters for payment. Not enough money in Swedish organisations to keep players long enough, its end of an era but same with all countries that have enough players speaking English

Sweden is a fairly miniscule country with only 9 million people and a declining young population. I makes absolute sense as to why they would struggle to produce new talent while having to rely on older players. I honestly think that the fall off of Brazilian Counter Strike is far more puzzling, as I have no idea how a nation that had an entire era plus an endless roster of promising talent managed to become the most disappointing CS nation by a mile

It’s more the interest in the game, there is almost no Asian talent in CS and North America is essentially dead because they can’t compete.
@Jonsson474
@Jonsson474 20 күн бұрын
The simple reason is that Swedish kids don’t care much about CS anymore. Since there is little interest, the commercial teams have abandoned the Swedish market moving to where it’s more lucrative and the talented new Swedish players don’t get a shot in the best teams anymore. This in turn makes even less kids interested in competitive CS, turning the Swedish player regrowth into a downward spiral.

I remember that back in 1.6 there used to be a team that almost acted like a youth/young talent team for those up and coming Swedish players that would eventually become big names and the reason why these guys could not join big orgs such as SK, NiP or Fnatic was simply because they already had stacked superteams, but that's where the org called Begrip Gaming sort of comes in, as a Swedish team that most young and talented Swedish players could go and play and develop their skills, some notable players that came from this path which then lead them to become superstars and legends in 1.6 or CS GO or even both were zet, Legenden, dsn, cArn, GoodFella, RobbaN, f0rest, Tentpole, face, Get_RiGhT, MODDII, FYRR74, pronax, Xizt, Delpan and Maikelele, there where some more very good players that have had a foot in Bergip Gaming before they got the chance to play for the real big Swedish teams. Begrip Gaming still excist today, but they're efforts and impact are not as great these days, not nearly at the same level as it was during 1.6, hopefully they might get a new chance now with their CS2 teams.

This video would have made more sense 3-4 years ago. Swedish cs development looks pretty bright at the moment, with initiatives being taken by the old guard like potti, who recently formed the national league, with emphasis on corporate-bcked teams like traditional sport, has proven to be successfull in shaping new talent. Sweden will bounce back, just a question of when.

Both Nawwk (Apeks) and Isak (Gamer Legion) made it to the Copenhagen major. So it was 3 swedes, not 1. (Although Isak and Gamer Legion technically didn't make the quali, they were in the major because they were the closest to quali and 9pandas couldn't make it due to visa issues so they replaced them)

Also two major culture changes happened. First people stopped wanting to cooperate as much and the secound is that when Sweden were at its peak it everyone had a home PC. Everyone in high school were gaming and lots of people were skipping school to game. The dedication were different and the scale of this movement shook the entire Swedish culture. Gamers were high skilled people who really tried to master the game. The first point is relevant since people dont want the struggle anymore, they dont want to figure out how a team can operate to win matches. Instead people just play a game in silence and after they go to bed. Back then people trained alot in 1v1 areas and were active in the community, nowadays people just queue a game and isnt a part of the community in the same way. Finally, Sweden never tried to look into the future and find a system to create and improve new players. These new guys went in to the game and even if they were skilled enough no one figured that we all would play better if we all just took an hour a week to actually collectivly train. If there were courses for free or training sessions for free backed by an non profit organization Sweden would still be dominant.

From 2014 to 2019 I was a crazy NiP fan. I had an emotional bond with that roster, when they won Dreamhack Malmo I almost cried from happiness 😂 I think what Sweds should do is going back to core. 5 swedish player rosters, not huge but functioning organizations (like former NiP and Godsent) and giving time to young sweds. I believe they have plenty of undiscovered young CS players out there

The lack of talent development, proper established organization,not letting upcoming 5 men rosters grow as they get picked apart by the bigger orgs and players making wrong moves or getting picked at the wrong time sets the scene back. In today’s era International teams or teams with a mixed nationalities are very much a thing. Also orgs not letting their OG stars leave or removed due to sentimental reasoning. Even Team Liquid who plays in the NA region has an international roster roster. The last 7-10 years there’s a dozen of players that all had talents but never had the right team,environment and such to grow or getting removed for reasons outside the game.
