Pure Genius. This version hurts my heart so very much, when I say Genius I give that credit to the whole band, how they just flow in the same direction as Adam's improvised lyrics, paints and incredible picture of a conversation between two people. Every time I hear a different version of this song it makes it better because its the same song but different and gives us more to love. *Small town afternoons* love it. So happy I was there that night!

"She says its only in my head She says, Oh Idk, but she says that its only in my head These things you're dreaming, they are only in your head These voices you hear sighing and lying and talking and singing and screaming are only in your head. They are jaguars in Mexico That's farther South than I will ever go My life, my head, my heart, my eyes are filled with squirrels and 1 million beautiful girls. Hello my sweet orangutan Doris Day is on tv again I apologize for everything Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello my sweet orangutan. She lives alone on her private archipelago With the palm trees and her seashells She sits in the waves all day She says she scared of dying and she wants to keep it that way. So, she sends a boat out on the sea with a little note for me that says "Why are all the girls so hungry? But why are all the girls so hungry? And why are all the boys so lonely? Why can't anybody see me? Why? Why? Why?" Come outside. She said, think I'm leaving tomorrow afternoon Going far away from here Come outside She said come outside with me, put away your fears. You and me, we're not meant for bedrooms You and me, we're not meant for home. Shit, I'm leaving here tomorrow, please come with me darling. I don't want to go alone. Well come outside she says Climb out your window, come outside Before the world gets any colder You and I get too much older Come outside she said. Come outside she Says Hey! Climb out your window, come outside Before my Momma knows I'm gone Daddy thinks you're home alone Come outside and run away with me she said. Come outside she said Climb outside your window, come outside And if you can't get away, find me some other day If not today, I'll be on my way. You and me weren't meant for bedrooms You and me weren't meant these small town afternoons. You and me were meant for leaving We were meant for highways and sunsets and all summer blooms. So come away, come away, come away Outside she said Run away, run away, run away with me."

I usually get disappointed when a band changes a song from the studio version to an unrecognizable live version. However, I have been listening to these guys and going to their concerts since the 90's and the evolution of this song shows a depth of emotion that relates to and is reflected in so many of their songs. This is a work of art. Brilliant.

Me and my mom's favorite band together. I've seen them 3 times with my mom, and her and I always talk about how no show is the same. The way they're able to turn a regular song into a 10 minute song, and you NEVER lose interest. They do it right. I'll be a counting crows fan until I die. I'll forever think of mom when I hear this band too.

Fabian, I found that version years ago and fell in love with this song - yet again. It's probably my favorite song written oddly in my life. I believe Adam is more outward in Pinkpop, but I also hold this version very dear as well. It's strange, because both versions (this and Pinkpop '08) are the same artists, band members (I think) and even emphasis on emotion, but they sound like two different songs with a common purpose. Also, the performance on Letterman is remarkable, even if they were still an early band with less self-innovation of lyrics and atmosphere.

Adam is known for being melodramatic during his performances. That's not to say he fakes it but embraces each feeling to the fullest. However, when he moved his hands to his mouth or chews on his fingers like he does on the "Come Outside" part here, I think he is baring his soul for everyone to see. I've noticed him do this on a few live performances and it always seems to be when he is most emotional and most vulnerable. It's pretty incredible for him to relive his past horrors for the audience and stand emotionally naked like that. I also think he does it for himself to remind himself of how far he's come.

I think the real fans pay to hear whatever the performer wants to convey. It is special when they add to the album version. If you don't like it, don't go. This band is especially known for the way they change their songs each show. You will NEVER see the same show from this band twice, and that is way cooler than hearing the same thing with a new song or two from the bands you want to listen to.
@w4rp3d011 жыл бұрын
The band is not the public's property ! They have the right to perform the way they want ! And you have the right to stop going to their shows if you don't like how they perform... You clearly see music as a simple product... I see music as a passion, that has unfortunately been commercialized. This guy is the perfect example of why a musician should play music. And he delivers one of the most amazing and passionate performance I have ever seen !

I truly feel Counting Crows are one of the best and most synced bands ever. Their cover of Friend of the Devil is a masterpiece. I only enjoy covers if they're done with originality and very well, and it's one of my favorites. This has to be one of the most artistic and poetic renditions of music ever performed and I still come back every so often...it's the specific version I used on my radio show to tell my ex gf I was ready to move across the continent with her, and was the beginning of an incredible love story. (We're still good friends). Amazing how music can be used to express. "This music is the glue of the world, it's what holds it all together. Without this, life would be meaningless."
