Compound timing with compound learning points, this has truly opened the lid on the nature of the more complicated rhythms and also the subtleties of notation: dotted, single and double bar. As a player of Metallica songs it also reveals what is technically behind the musical interpretation rather just developing a ‘feel’ for a drumming style.

I love the way you teach, man. Helps a lot! I'm mostly an ear drummer, but sometimes it needs to be broken down like this.

Haha nice vid. This was the first song I ever learnt and played, I always thought it was a good one for a beginner due to the slow tempo, it lends itself well to repeating parts over and over then piecing it together

Thank you sir. I've been learning the drums for several months now. I haven't tried playing a song yet tho. I don't want to play just any random song. I want to play something I really like. This song was one of my favorite songs growing up. A couple weeks ago I saw a video of someone drumming to this and thought "this is going to be the 1st song I learn". I printed off the sheet music and right away noticed the timing. I don't understand this at all so I gave up on it. This video definitely helps but I'm still confused. On my sheet music these parts you're showing are labeled 12/8. It always jumping back and forth between 6/8 to 12/8. Another song I'd love to be my first is Sad but True. However it's pretty difficult imo. Any chance you'll do a detailed video on that? Edit: I think I just figured out the 12/8 haha. I'd have to count to 6 two times in that measure, right?

We had tracks with 3,5,6, 7 and an 11... I had to count a lot before 7 became natural!.. I'm not sure whether 7 beats to the bar would be 7/8? Or whether 5.. Is 5/4?, it was a bit like mission impossible timing.
