his Oxford University degree was a Bachelor in Philosophy in English Literature. He was offered a position to teach English Literature at West Point but turned it down to write music, so he quit the Army(dont think he actually taught at west point). And he never flew any combat missions or attacked anything, although he was a trained pilot in the army. More interestingly he dated Janis Joplin, and married Rita Coolidge.

Kris Kristofferson is primarily a song-writer, and while he recorded his own versions of his songs, it's generally the covers by other artists that are most famous -- this one with Johnny Cash and Me & Bobbie McGee with Janis Joplin being the prime examples.

I have known this song my entire life, and loved it, but never gave it much more thought than that. But seven plus years ago my ex-wife died suddenly from a heart attack. As I went to the hospital with our sons, and seeing her in the ER in peace and far away, this song came to my mind. As my son drove me home(I was a mess) I found myself singing this song out loud in a whisper, where our boys could hear but they said nothing. This song was the only way, however the subconscious works, I could process my grief, my disappointment, my regret, my shame, wasted opportunities, and pieces of future we as a family would never know. This song was what my subconscious pulled out as a hymn of comfort for me to process the worse week of my life. Kristofferson is a great American artist.

My hangover days are well in my past, but I still sing this song while walking the dog every Sunday morning. There are very few instances when a singer’s voice perfectly represents the song material. This is one of those times. It’s in my top ten songs of all time, and obviously an S tier as far as I’m concerned.

Kris Kristofferson stars as Billy The Kid in a movie, “Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid”, and Bob Dylan is his sidekick. My grandfather worked on the movie as an assistant director, so they gave him an extra role. There’s a scene where a gang of guys working with Billy starts to turn on him at a camp, and Billy feels it coming. He starts telling a story that basically lets the men know he’s on to them. My grandfather is one of them, standing next to a wagon wheel, he makes a move for his shotgun leaning against the wheel, and Billy (Kris) guns him down, and then he and Dylan take out the rest of them.

Written by Kristofferson, originally recorded by Ray Stevens, barely broke the Billboard 100. Johnny Cash took it to number one. The line: Lord I wish I was stoned, caused a lot of controversy. Johnny Cash being Johnny Cash when asked to change the line for television appearances refused.
@OriginalLictre
@OriginalLictre 11 ай бұрын
I've always heard that line as "Wishing, Lord, that I was stone. 'Cause there's something in a Sunday, makes a body feel alone." Something of stone can't be feeling the pain and loneliness of a Sunday morning hangover. It can't feel anything, which would be an improvement over the various pains he's feeling.

@@OriginalLictre from Wikipedia: "This version was used in the Columbo episode Swan Song in 1974, in which Cash performed it during a garden party. You should listen to "Help Me Make It Through the Night" which has been sung by dozens of people, but probably the most known was by Sammi Smith. Kristofferson said that this song came straight out of personal experience. He'd been a Rhodes scholar and a military helicopter pilot, was about to take a teaching job at West Point, had a wife and kids, and he left all of that to move to Nashville and become a songwriter (he didn't even consider being a performer until much later). He moved into a fleabag apartment, took a job as a janitor at Columbia recording studios (where he was forbidden to pitch his songs to any of the artists working there) and was leading a lonely existence. He said that Sunday was the hardest day of the week because the bars were all closed (this was in the mid 60s) and it was not a day to be alone.

You know that Kristofferson wrote "Me and Bobby McGee" on a challenge from his producer Fred Foster to use female name Bobby (his secretary) in a song. First recorded by Roger Miller, then when Janis did it and switched genders in the song it became her song.

Janis never got to perform that song either. She died like a day or two after recording it.

Kristofferson is a recovering alcoholic. I've seen him interviewed about this song. He said it was written back in the day when bars were closed on Sunday. There was nothing worse for an alcoholic than Sundays to remind them how messed up and lonely their life had become. Sundays meant having no place to congregate with people and imbibe in the only that helped you forget everything. Ironically, it was also the main reason your life was messed up in the first place. It's a great description of the hamster wheel of alcoholism.

Kris, was an Army Officer, & helicopter pilot, he got a job cleaning up @ the bar, June Carter Cash, Johnny’s wife, sang there, he gave her the song, asked her to give it to John, we’ll, he never heard back. So he flew the helicopter, landed on John’s ranch/farm, pitched him the song, he liked it, and made it a hit 👍

This isn’t just a song, it’s poetry. The lyrics perfectly capture the loneliness and despair of ‘coming down’. Kristofferson is the complete renaissance man and his music is just one of his accomplishments.

A Kris Kristofferson tune, that Johnny Cash owned. KK has lived quite an amazing life, An Oxford Grad, Rhodes Scholar, US Army Vet, Helicopter pilot, close friend of Janis Joplin, witter of "Me and Bobby McGee", which Janis recorded and had released post-humorously following her untimely, but not unpredictable death.

Yah, I always loved that moment when the hangover ended, which was usually about three-fourths of the way through my route as a home delivery milkman, back in the late 70s. Great job. Party until about 2am, nap until about 5:30am when you realize you missed the alarm sounding an hour ago. Make it the loaded truck to leave the dock in a "dammit-I'm-late-again" frenzy. Drink chocolate milk straight from the carton while stumbling through the early deliveries. Hangover starts about 2 hours in when the alcohol buzz finally wears off, and ends about an hour before the route ends. Go home at noon and sleep until about 6pm, party until 2am again....repeat until the weekend.

When I was in college, ~1980, Kris Kristofferson and Jane Fonda were shooting the movie Rollover. Some of the scenes were shot in our campus center (student union), which had arched elements that were repainted for the film to represent a Saudi oil billionaire's palace. The actors were only there for a few days, but Kristofferson made a point to leave the safety of the roped off security areas to say hello to the students. He also took the time to sign autographs for everybody. He's truly a nice man! (Meanwhile, Fonda stayed in her trailer when she wasn't on set. She was the bigger star, and somewhat notorious at the time, so understandably took a low profile.) I wish I'd known Kristofferson's connection to Janis Joplin and Me and Bobby McGee at the time; it would have made the encounter even more memorable.

Imagine sitting in on an AA meeting and then going home and playing this song. You've just heard someone share about losing everything, and then you hear the lines about frying bacon, the girl on the swing, and the Sunday school song. I think Kristofferson is singing about something much deeper here than a mere hangover. He's talking about things lost, things messed up, opportunities never realized. About feeling apart and alone from the rest of society. And wishing he was stoned (drunk) to get rid of the feeling the narrator has got right now.

This song reminds me of when I moved to Houston, TX after graduating college. I lived by myself, and drank way too much. Often closed the honky tonks down looking for companionship. Way too many Sunday afternoons sleeping off a hangover by the pool, dripping alcohol from all my pores. Such a meaningful song for anybody that has ever been in that situation.

Kris Kristofferson's entire LIFE is worth looking at. Man did far more in life BEFORE turning to music than most people do their entire life....... and that doesn't INCLUDE the song-writing credits he has.

Here's an odd connection, but I see it; while he's going on with his random observations- kid cussing while kicking a can, someone frying chicken - I can see Jimmy Stewart watching his fellow tenants through binoculars in the MOST excellent Alfred Hitchcock movie "Rear Window". Kristofferson's warbly voice style is just SO perfect for this song! Great reaction!

Love this song. Love Kris Kristofferson. Perfect evocative storytelling. Kristofferson wrote it. It's not rock, it's country. Check out his The Highwaymen collab with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson. And on the subject of Willie Nelson ... a rabbit hole well worth investigating.

He is in Songwriters Hall of Fame and Country Music Hall of Fame. Part of the country supergroup The Highwaymen along with Willie Nelson,Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. He was an actor in many major films including Blade with Wesley Snipes and A Star is Born with Barbara Streisand. He wrote this one but it was a big hit for Johnny Cash. He also wrote Me and Bobby McGee famously covered by Janis Joplin. You should check out more of his stuff to check out his songwriting. Some big ones that were hits both by him and covered many times over include Hel Me Make it Through the Night,Loving her was Easier,Why Me Lord or For the Good Times.

Kris Kristofferson - At age 22 he appeared in Sports Illustrated for his achievements in collegiate rugby union, American football, and track and field. He and his classmates revived the Claremont Colleges Rugby Club and it remains a Southern California rugby institution. Kristofferson graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude, in literature. He won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University (UK). He was awarded a Blue for boxing, played rugby for his college, and began writing songs. He joined the U.S. Army, was commissioned as a second lieutenant, and attained the rank of captain. He became a helicopter pilot. He also completed Army Ranger School, one of the most challenging military schools in the world. He was offered an assignment to teach English literature at West Point, but left the Army to pursue songwriting. In 1965 Kristofferson moved to Nashville. His family disowned him because of his career decision. He got a job sweeping floors at Columbia Recording Studios in Nashville. He met June Carter there and asked her to give Johnny Cash a tape of his. She did, but Cash put it on a large pile with others. He also worked as a commercial helicopter pilot flying to and from oil platforms. He wrote "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and "Bobby McGee" at this time. Weeks after giving Carter his tapes, Kristofferson landed a helicopter in Cash's front yard, gaining his full attention. After hearing "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", Cash decided to record it, and in 1970 Kristofferson won Songwriter of the Year for the song at the Country Music Association Awards. "For the Good Times" (Ray Price) won "Song of the Year" in 1970 from the Academy of Country Music, while "Sunday Morning Coming Down" (Johnny Cash) won the same award from the academy's rival, the Country Music Association, in the same year. This is the only time an individual received the same award from these two organizations in the same year for different songs. He won three Grammys. Then he became an actor appearing about 90 movies. He has been romantically linked with Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon & Janis Joplin.
