I have heard this song dozens of times and I cry every time I hear it and I'm not sure why. I think it may have a great deal to do with the beautiful voice of Jennifer Nettles and all the emotion she packs into this song. But I think it's great that she starts by begging him to not return to his wife but to stay with her (his lover) and she ends by getting sick of living on his crumbs and telling him not to return to his lover but to stay with his wife. I love that change because it is great to see her finally walk away from the lies he has been telling her "I'm gonna leave my wife for you" when he was NEVER going to leave his wife. And of course the great voice of Jennifer Nettles. It takes a lot of self confidence and belief in your own voice to get up and sing with just a single acoustic guitar as your backup for much of the song. Beautiful song. Jennifer Nettles is a very powerful singer. This is a real tear jerker. A look into what the other woman goes through, her feelings, the hurt of all the broken promises, and her choice to move on no matter how much she hurts. I think, just by the way she reacted, was in that situation a one time. BTW- I love the way you're not ashamed to show your emotions. Makes you seem more real. Thank you!

It is emotional but difficult for me to sympathize with the woman because I know what it's like to have a cheating partner (wife). Being "the other woman" is not something we should romanticize or sympathize with. It is a great song and she does well with it. I just can't get that emotional about this one. It might be different for me if she were to admit in the song that she knows this is wrong.

Amazing reaction! I appreciate how genuine your reaction is. She was in the middle of a divorce when she recorded this. Her husband had cheated but in this song she wanted to put herself in the other womans shoes. It took a lot out of her. I'm new here but if you haven't reacted to "hurt" by Johnny Cash please do. That song and especially the video hits you right in the feels. I love the raw emotion by Jennifer and how she’s hurting, begs him to stay with her, but develops strength as the song progresses until she tells him to stay away. This topic may be uncomfortable for some but Country tells it like it is and if there’s any emotion that you’re dealing with, this genre will bottle those feelings up and make music that will hopefully help you. Great songs along the lines of this one, about infidelity, realizing your mistakes, or even getting the courage to break free from a damaging relationship, are All these Years by Sawyer Brown; Promises, Reasons I Cheat, and Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart by Randy Travis; It’s Your Call by Reba McEntire; and You Were Mine by the Dixie Chicks. Jennifer Nettles is also an actress. She has been in two of the Dolly Parton movies where she played Dolly's mother when Dolly was a little girl. And she's in the recent movie "Harriet" as a really nasty, vicious slave owner. The performance is fantastic, but very disturbing.

She can sing anything and you'll want more. We don't have to share the exact story in this song, but I think most of us can relate on some level. *sniff the sequel*

When someone cheats, in most cases they are using not just their spouse but also using their mistress. Jennifer's husband cheated, she's taking an empathetic look at it from the side of the other woman. That is some real reflection to realize you might not be the only one hurting in something like that.
