When it comes to male country singers, two stand above all others. Vince, and Kieth Whitley. Both will rip your heart out. This being a Vince video, I will concentrate my comments on him. Vince has been a singer for a very long time. His first gig of note was with a band called Pure Prairie League. Their big hit was a song called “Amy”. He left that band, to pursue a Country career. Vince is also a world class guitar player. He participates in Eric Clapton’s Crossroads festival regularly.

Vince is my all-time favorite country singer. What's really amazing about him, is that as good as his voice is, his guitar playing is even better. He's hilariously funny as well. His stories make me laugh so hard I cry.

Vince wrote the first part of "Go Rest High on that Mountain" when his friend Keith Whitley died of an alcohol overdose. The last part he wrote when his brother died. There are two great videos out there, the early one with Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs singing harmony. The later one with Allison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs at Carnegie Hall. They are different, but both great.

Vince is one of my favorite guitar players, of any genre. His acoustic solos are melodic and emotional , and he can blast into orbit, finger picking on the electric guitar. He was a regular invitee to Eric Clapton's Crossroad festivals, where he tore up the stage every time.

Patti Loveless is the backup singer. A wonderful singer in her own right. She is a Ky girl and, like Loretta Lynn, the daughter of a coal miner. I think Patti singing with Vince Gill "Go Rest High on that mountain" is the best version. I think he recorded that song with her and Ricky Scaggs. Check out Patti Loveless singing "You'll never leave Harlan Alive". An interesting song of a coal miner in Harlan KY. Very haunting.
